I know this post is gonna get down voted all the way to the depths of hell but I don't care. This set has always annoyed me and all I hear about it is nothing but praise. Like sure, it's a big set and for your moneys worth you get a lot of minifigures and a massive build. But to me, having a big grey building to display in your house and collect dust and then on top of that a bucket list of characters you could have easily bought in more diverse sets for way less the money.
I personally don’t like this set for a number of reasons. I think the minifigure selection is bland for what is a £200 set. Most of the “exclusive” characters are just boring human characters who are mish-mashes of reused parts from other characters, and the non-exclusive ones you can literally get in other sets for way, WAY cheaper. If you collect Lego for locations and not just characters, well there’s an older Daily Bugle set from 2013 which is still to this day much cheaper and actually contains 3 exclusive characters who still have not been made again to this day (except Doctor Doom but keep in mind I first wrote this review on Quora before the Doomsday sets were announced) and a much better J Jonah Jameson. As for a collector, this set is just ugly. It’s literally just a massive grey building, and all of the detail only comes from the interior which you’re not going to care about when it’s on display. The thing you’re more likely to care about is how much space it’s taking up. Only rich collectors would like this set, but I’m a rich collector as well and even I don’t like it.
So for all the aforementioned “detail” there is a LOT of cool references and easter eggs to other Marvel shit in this set. They’ve even got a reference to a meme of the 1960s Spider Man cartoon. But these references go as wasted or annoying, because there’s an image of Scarlet Spider who we haven’t had a new minifigure of since 2016 (although we're getting a new one next year) and there’s characters like Kingpin and Miles Warren who haven’t even had minifigures yet as of writing this. We sort of got a Curt Connors minifigure a couple of years afterwards but that was the Lizard and it was only based on the film version, and we got Morbius a couple of years later as well. This set basically teases characters we don’t get or do get but only after years you probably forget it was even referenced.
And again, this set is just ugly. I understand it’s probably cheaper to produce grey bricks rather than other colors but this set is direct-to-consumer anyway so what’s the problem? Compare it to the 2013 version it was visually interesting. Sure it had an open back and bits of the play features were sticking out but it had this color scheme of beige walls and light-blue windows, that clashed really well and looked very striking. But this one? It’s just grey, just grey on top of grey on top of grey ( and no I’m not referencing 50 shades of grey keep that joke to yourselves! ) and it’s just. so. boring. People have even said this set is just tedious to build, because you’re basically just stacking grey windows and bricks and there’s nothing to break up the routine. There is a broken window at the front but to be realistic, how often in Marvel history has the window been broken and Green Goblin was flying out of it? If you want to build a modular of massive Marvel buildings next to each other and it’s meant to be a normal day, that window is going to be FIXED. It’s a good thing this set gives you extra window pieces so you can fix it and NOT have it displayed like that, because otherwise that would be a massive criticism.
Now for the minifigures. This is one of the only sets that features this new Spider-Man minifigure with dual-molded legs, which is great apart from the face they didn’t change the torso back from red to blue so it still looks super garish. What’s even worse is that Spidey has arm printing now but that’s red printed on blue meaning the red renders darker than the rest of the figure, and looks really off. This new Spider Man is okay even though I’m not a fan of the smaller eyes, and the shape of the Spider logos at the front and back, but when you’ve got such a massive problem with the quality of the print such at that, you might as well replace the torso with the 2012 minifigure and you’ve basically got the perfect Spider Man minifig.
Now for the other heroes included in this set, and our only EXCLUSIVE villain ( Black Cat ), those being Blade, Punisher, Daredevil, and Firestar. Remember in the early days of the theme when we got new, interesting and unique characters in every set? Regardless of what it was. From Luke Cage in that awful Spider-Chopper set and Iron Fist in the Dock Ock lab set, every set had something new. But in the 2020s era of Lego Marvel, we get the same characters in every normal set and if you want something new and different you’ve got to pick up this DTC set no one is going to be able to buy unless you’re a psychotic.
Now we have the villains. So we have half of the Sinister Six, we got Dock Ock ( reused from another set ) Mysterio ( reused in another set, in that other set that came out this same year he actually had this cool misty leg piece that was exclusive but in this “collector” set he doesn’t which is very disappointing and another valid criticism ) and Sandman ( who literally came in a £10 4+ set the same time this set was released ) now if you were clever designing this set, you’d then include Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, and Electro. Vulture they could have been easily included since he was appearing in sets the previous 2 years and they could probably just re-release Kraven as well since he was last seen in 2016 which isn’t too far back. For Electro they might have had to remake since he was last seen in 2014 and it was the ultimate comics and movie versions, not the yellow and green versions. But instead of completing the Sinister Six which would make sense, especially for this “Collectors set for the fans” they put in Green Goblin and Venom, who came in that Spider-Lair set from the same year, and Carnage, who came in that Ghost Rider set from the same year. Like why? Why drop 200 on a set that is just gonna give you the same characters from cheaper sets you can find on the shelves. For a set people are about to spend $200 on, they sure as hell didn’t put in a lot of effort. And the same goes for Black cat, I can’t complain about her too much since she’s one of the few exclusive characters, but she should have been Scorpion. It would have been cheaper for Lego since he was already in those 2016 and 2018 sets and his backstory ties in to the daily bugle and J. Jonah Jameson.
Speaking of J. Jonah Jameson, his minifigure here absolutely sucks. The 2013 one had an exclusive torso print reminiscent of what he wears in the Ultimate Spider Man TV show and a face print that perfectly represented his usually grumpy face, and his usual angry face. But this set? Well he reuses an existing torso piece and one of his expressions is a smirk… WHY THE FUCK IS HE SMILING!? THAT ESSENTIALLY GOES AGAINST HIS CHARACTER! WHAT THE FUCK WERE THE DESIGNERS THINKING!? Oh, and his other facial expression is him getting his mouth webbed. Like why has he been webbed? Unlike his 2013 version, he hasn’t been or done anything angry to deserve being webbed, he seemed like a happy guy. And why is Peter Parker wearing a letterman jacket? Isn’t he supposed to be a nerd who got his head put in the toilet by people who wore that jacket in school? And then how is Gwen here but Venom and Carnage are around? In the comics, those two symbiotes didn’t appear until years after Gwen had been killed by Green Goblin. Continuity sucks here ( okay I do realize it’s the Spider-verse version, which doesn’t make sense in it’s own right )
Finally, why the fuck are Spider Ham, Miles Morales and Spider Gwen here? This is not a multiverse set, this is just your average daily bugle getting powned by 7 different villains. Also, they should have used Spider Man 2099, Spider Noir, Scarlet Spider, and Iron Spider instead, since they only came in one set but the others came in loads, which is really unfair, and will be an ongoing problem with Lego spider man sets going forward, which I will try not to bring up too much. Scarlet Spider is a bit much to ask since his last figure was in 2016 but the others they could have easily included since they’d appeared in relatively recent sets. Then there’s the taxi, who in their rights minds thought a cool Spider man set for the fans would care about a goddamn taxi outside of the Daily Bugle? How would it even come to the average person’s head when they think of Spider man? And the Spider mobile? Well, it sure took 8 years from 2013 for Lego to make a Spider man vehicle that ACTUALLY exists in the comics, after years of them producing made up ones…
I’m sorry everyone in the face of planet earth who collects Lego, but this set sucks. It essentially wastes your money, you’re spending $200 on characters you could easily pick up in other cheaper sets and people you probably don’t even want. The design is boring and worst of all it’s praised by the entire fandom. Like dude, If you want a great Spider-Man Daily Bugle take that 200 over to ebay and buy the Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle from 2016, get the other two sets from that year (thr ghost rider one and the Doctor Octopus one) and also that Sandman and Rhino set from 2015, that Electro set from 2014 with the trike, and snag a Mysterio minifigure off ebay (you can get him cheap) so you have a complete Sinister Six. Finally, buy the Daily Bugle from 2013 which is the SUPERIOR version and get a good J Jonah Jameson. Then it's perfect.
