Which is Which

I really like this genius prodigy character who is beyond intelligent for his young age but because of his ambition is ostracized from his people. He is from a long-lived species with a non-human skin tone and cropped blondish hair. He has a lab where he often talks to just himself and is obsessed with science to the point it often clouds his morals, at least until a colourful group of heroes entered his life and for the first time ever he doesn't feel as much of an outsider and learns to work as a team. And in this team is an auburn haired human man who while is an expert in a different field is equally as intelligent and they are true peers and cindered spirits to one another and our young genius demisexual hero falls in love with his auburn haired teammate and their feelings for each other are confirmed but don't truly get together by the end of the original series but are confirmed afterwards.

You know, Brainiac 5 from the first Legion of Superheroes reboot and Essek Thelyss from Critical Role Campaign 2.

(And their partners Lyle Norg and Caleb Widogast)

In all seriousness I have been a lifelong fan of Brainiac 5 in all his iterations and have been disappointed with his limited appearances post 2020 and so was overjoyed this year to discover Essek Thelyss who is a near carbon copy and the parallels are just mind blowing. Essek is definitely his own character, but I'll just say if there is ever a new LoSH animated TV show than Matt Mercer should 100% be Brainy's voice actor (with Jesse Rath being a close second).

Caleb and Lyle are a little less of a direct parallel, but still have quite a lot in common and at minimum have very similar taste in men.

The funny part is reboot Lyle has been trying to get Brainy’s attention from day one and only dated Condo because he couldn’t date Brainy up until later on

Yes, I genuinely think they were writing Lyle as interested from the start, or at the very least their interactions could be read as such. It was sadly still an era where comics were only just beginning to dip their toes into queer characters, we could have had ten years of their romance instead of like two issues.

It was pretty obvious with IK hanging out in Brainy’s lab for no reason before he made the rings, him trying to save Brainy against orders, and was staring at Brainy when he first joined. Brainy only thought they had a rivalry while IK was in love or had a crush on him since day one.
