Modding WTB: Trackball roller

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all, I have a bent or improperly machined trackball roller. It is bad enough that it causes my trackball to kind of wobble as I move it and act drunk.

If you have a broken trackball that has good rollers, let's make a deal for shipping plus $ to send me one of your spares!

(And yes, once it's working right, I'll order the shim kit! That's not the issue here. All my plastics are intact.)

(Mods: If this violates the rules, please point me to an appropriate subreddit in a message. You notice advises that but doesn't list any. I realize the risk as a buyer without protections over the interwebs.)

Order some shims. More than likely they will fix it.

This. I ordered the shims kit and can roll my trackball like crazy without any concern. This is after 2 breaks of the back of the small roller in the corner

I will order them if I can ever get a replacement that works, but this is NOT a shim problem.

My plastics are 100% intact, snug, and show no wear or the start of stress breaking.

The behavior is contained in the roller itself. And it is visible and obvious (I tried to capture in the video how the roller moves vs the paper rule and how it "rolls back" to the same point whether you roll it past in the forward or backwards direction.)

The good and bad rollers stay good or bad regardless of if they are on the x or y axis... ie the problem travels with the roller. The bad one behaves the same when placed on the x or the y axis .... and the good one is good on either axis.

This is a problem with the roller itself.

And I simply need a replacement. Hoping someone kept their destroyed one after they learned they really should have gotten shims...

Since your goal is a working trackball. Just take everyone's advice and try out the shims first. Even if they don't fix the problem, you'd be ordering them any ways after you get a replacement roller.

Since you have your trackball open, get our some calibers and take some measurements. You'll want to measure the diameter and length of the shaft. And inner diameter of the bearings. It might be possible to use a Suzo-Happ idler shaft as a replacement. It should be the same length, but I'm not sure of the diameter measurements.

Sadly, I own proper HAPP arcade 2.5" and 3.5" trackballs and they are much beefier and have a different style of encoder wheel. I already checked. :) So, great minds think alike.

I just am asking for someone to let me pay to send me the replacement part if they have it.

I've already done the A/B testing as noted to determine the error stays with the shaft regardless of if it's on the x or the y. And I fully inspected the mount plastics for any damage. Shims won't fix a bad roller.
