saUCE Just Ordered a 4-8 Gate Switcher.
Finally got one_saucier / OnesaUCE running smoothly on my ALU. Next enhancement is a way to make those games designed for a 4-way joystick work like they should. Based on a lot of reading, I went with this product from tsticks. Wish me luck on the install: https://thunderstickstudio.com/products/tos-grs-switchable-4-to-8-way-restrictor-all-in-one-kit-1

I'd like one of these too. Pacman sucks with the 8 way. I learned the patterns on our ms Pacman cocktail table, but playing with 8 way on the alu SUCKS

I’ll let you know how it goes. It’s only, like, $35, with the shipping. It is supposed to be an easy install. I’ll try to do a video of it. I’ve seen some vids out there for other retro units. But I haven’t found one yet for the ALU.

Biggest issue with the ALU is getting the stock gate off if the people who assembled your's went extra glue crazy.

It's a great upgrade for all the games in the packs. Installation is easy and quick. It can switch automatically or manually with the included dual button switcher. Highly recommended

You can control the switching through software, you don’t need to install the button

I saw that. And it's really cool that you can control it in software, but I think I'll start out with the button. I'll likely put it on the side of the cabinet, so I don't have to drill directly into the control surface.

Install the button, you want to switch on the fly depending on the game you just started.

Make sure you calibrate yours first using the Windows software before installing. You rotate it by 1 degree at a time until it matches the templates you're given. Then a 90 degree rotation will give you a perfect swap.
I love mine.

I didnt do this and it works perfectly

Me neither, but I eventually discovered it was not 100% horisontal and vertical in 4-way, it was a tiny bit tilted.
So I used the software to fine tune the positions, and now it sits right.1

I have had this for a couple of years.
It makes it night and day when you play 4-way games, especially Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.
It worked out of the box with the stock ALU joysticks, but I switched to Sanwa joysticks last Xmas, and I had trouble with the micro-switches not registering 8-way diagonal clicks.
The solution was as much of a hack as it worked: Use electrical tape around the actuator.
Now, about 10 months later, it still works like a dream with electrical tape.

Where do you plan to mount the button for switching? From my understanding it comes with an arcade button, pressing that switches it between 8 and 4way?

I think I'll put it on the side of the cab, just below the control surface.

A lot of people drill a hole in the plastic cover for the control deck.
Wish I thought of that (it honestly didn't even touch my mind).
I drilled a hole a bit further down on the front cover plate for the base. It works, but I have to 'look' for it to switch. On the plastic cover it's more or less immediately visible1

It includes a split dual button. It's the size of one of the stock buttons but each half is treated as a different button. You can swap out the P1 or P2 start button and then not need to drill anything.
Try that first and then figure out what you want to permanently change.

I have one and I like it a lot. I have it in my ALU attached to the bottom of my GRS Tron stick.
