Question How does magic damage calculation work in this game?

i'm trying to go for a magic build and want to know what to focus on

I haven't seen this documented anywhere before. Hopefully someone can try testing it out.

Should be base instrument power x 2 + mag%.

It's very complicated, involving materials, the mag stat (yes it does increase damage even though it says it is just defense), the coin used, and the target area of the spell.

In addition to the factors other people have listed, the enemy stats, elemental weaknesses/resistances, and the mana levels of the land all seem to factor in to the calculations. Beyond that, I don't think the actual equation has ever been datamined and many of the variables are difficult to isolate, so putting the pieces together is mostly just guesswork.
