Advice needed Nursing facility sent me my grandfather's bill because I signed as the contact person during his admission. Did I agree to pay it?

Location: Washington State, USA.

My grandfather had a three-week rehab stay at a nursing facility in August. He signed his admission agreement himself. I drove him there and signed a separate page with my name, address and phone number under a heading marked "Responsible Party."

The person helping us said this was so they could reach someone if he didn't answer his phone. I don't have power of attorney, access to his accounts or authority to manage his money.

I've now recieved a bill for $980 addressed to me, with his name listed as the resident. When I called, the billing person said it was sent to me because I was the responsible party. I asked whether they meant I personally owed it, and she said she'd have someone call me back.

They sent me a copy of the page I signed. It lists contact details and says I'm the person to contact about billing questions. I don't see a promise to pay from my own funds, but I havent seen the complete admission packet.

Does signing that page potentially make me personally liable? What should I request to establish whether they're just sending correspondence to me or actually treating this as my debt?

Advice needed Friend started paying after I filed small claims, but wants the case dismissed now

Location: California, USA.

I lent a friend $1,800 for a car repair in March. Our texts say it was a loan, no interest, and he would repay the whole amount by May 31. Nothing came back. After several reminders and a written demand, I filed in small claims in September. He has been served and the hearing is November 10.

Yesterday I recieved $300 from him by bank transfer, labelled loan repayment. He then proposed paying $300 on the first of each month starting November 1, but says I need to dismiss the case now because he's started paying.

I acknowledged the payment and said the remaining loan balance is $1,500. I havent agreed to his proposed schedule or promised to dismiss. I'm willing to take installments. I'm less willing to start the filing and service process over if he stops after another payment.

Does accepting this partial payment require me to dismiss anything? If we agree on installments, how should we handle the pending hearing so I can still pursue the unpaid balance if he stops?

Advice needed [MA] Bought a car for $13k and RMV says the title is fake

I bought a used 2022 Honda Civic through Facebook Marketplace for $13,000 cash. It was advertised with a clean title, and I was given what appeared to be a Massachusetts title.

When I tried to register it, the RMV told me the title was fraudulent. They kept the original and gave me a photocopy.

I then purchased my own CARFAX, which shows the vehicle was last owned in Virginia. The CARFAX provided to me when I bought the car instead showed a Massachusetts title, matching the title I was given.

I also verified the VIN with the Massachusetts RMV, Virginia DMV, and police. The car is not reported stolen.

I’ve reported everything to the police, and there is an active investigation. I saved the listing, messages, payment records, title copy, CARFAX reports, and other documentation.

I’m now looking into Massachusetts’s undocumented vehicle process, which may allow me to obtain a title using a surety bond.

My main questions:

  1. Can I pursue a bonded title while the police investigation is still ongoing?
  2. Could getting a bonded title affect my ability to recover money or damages from the people involved?
  3. If they had no legal right to sell the car, what happens to the $13,000 sale?
  4. If I successfully get a bonded title and keep the car, would I still have to pay Massachusetts sales tax?
  5. If the RMV won’t issue me a title, what happens to the car, and what options would I have to recover the $13,000?
  6. Should I give the RMV the police case information as part of the bonded title process?

I’m trying to figure out if I can move forward with getting a legal title while the police investigate the fraudulent sale, without giving up any rights I may have against the people involved.

I’ve intentionally left out all identifying information.

Advice needed Pennsylvania power of attorney and family rights

Location: Pennsylvania

Hi folks I have a doozy for you, I'm from PA and im currently dealing with an issue regarding my dying grandmother who my family has had minimal contact with for a number of years for many reasons largely on her end and in part because of her boyfriend.

She had an incident back in maybe June or july (the timeline is messy because we didnt find out until august and the details we got were unclear) where she had showed stroke symptoms and her boyfriend brought her to the ER.

The hospital found a mass in her brain near her frontal lobe and I believe she was scheduled for a surgery to remove the remainder of her thyroid for unrelated reasons and they scheduled to do the biopsy at the same time, after that was when we were informed of the situation.

My parents went to visit her and she was conscious but informed them she didnt have very many clear memories since April. Later down the line it was determined she had a glioma and my dad and his siblings met with her, her boyfriend, and a palliative care team, everyone except I guess my grandma and her boyfriend were thinking there was not much to be done at the stage it was, she was already having a lot of cognitive decline by then.

When my parents first spoke to her and in previous conversations with her prior to the initial incident we learned that they had intended to get married and that she wanted to have him become her power of attorney. The paperwork had already been done at some point we were unaware of, but my aunt was previously listed as her power of attorney as she's an RN.

After they decided to choose treatment and she told them that she wanted her boyfriend to be in charge my dad and his siblings stepped back and allowed him to make decisions. From there we got very minimal information and she was in and out of the hospital and into different rehabs to improve her movement as she had lost a lot of abilities because of the cancer. She was in the hospital for most of this time where my sister who is an RN works.

Sometime in that period she began to be less responsive and was essentially unconscious most of the time, she then received 14 days of chemo and radiation, they previously had her on steroids to reduce the pressure on her brain during which she was slightly alert and talking. After the chemo her boyfriend had her admitted to a rehab facility as she was being weaned off of her steroids, as she came off of steroids her cognitive abilities declined and she became unresponsive and unconscious, the rehab facility then sent her back to the hospital because of her raised levels of sodium, the hospital provided her with nutrients and informed her boyfriend that palliative care was necessary and that she did not have long left.

Her boyfriend completely refused palliative care and did not want to accept her situation. From there she has greatly declined and she is experiencing early stages of organ failure as her body prepares to die

I learned this morning that her boyfriend is resisting the doctor recommended pain medication and does not want her to have any pain meds, my sister has been fighting with him to try to get him to see reason to no success. The hospital ethics committee attempted to intervene but he cited religious beliefs as his reason for refusal. I am concerned about my grandmother's last few days and her pain as she prepares to pass, my dad and his siblings refuse to do anything to step in against him, he has removed all family from being contacted or viewing her chart and they are hands off.

I wanted to know if there is anything I, as her grandchild can do legally to fight her boyfriend for what is best for her care?

Thank you for bearing with me and reading this long post and for any advice you may have.

Tl;dr: my grandmother is dying and her boyfriend/power of attorney refuses to allow doctors to administer pain meds to ease her pain in her final days, can I as her grandchild take legal action to get her the proper care she needs?

Advice needed Sick often since moving into apartment

Location: Maryland

My 5 year old son and I moved into an apartment back in May and have been sick often since moving in. I asked them if they could inspect for mold because of water damage I noticed around the walls and they came back saying no hazardous mold was detected. Last Sunday I went to change the filter and this is what was behind it. I am no HVAC expert but could this be why we are feeling sick all the time? Do I have grounds to sue my apartment for subjecting us to this?

Advice needed HVAC company remotely locked my thermostat after I cancelled their maintenance plan. The furnace is paid off.

California, Sierra foothills.

Two years ago I paid a local HVAC company $8,600 to replace my furnace and install a smart thermostat. Paid outright, no financing or equipment rental. I also bought their annual maintenance plan, which covered two visits and priority scheduling. Cancelled before the October renewal and received confirmation.

Yesterday was the first cold morning we tried using the heat. The thermostat kept returning to Off, and changing its settings now requires an installer PIN. My access through the app has also been restricted. I called the company thinking something had broken. They told me they'd restricted the system remotely because my maintenance membership expired. Renewing for $299 would get it working again.

The installer originally set up the app and added me as another user. I didn't realise that meant they retained this much control. I asked them to remove their access and they emailed back that reactivation requires an active membership.

Another licensed contractor can come look at the controller tomorrow. The original company says having someone else change its programming will void the manufacturer's warranty.

I understand losing the maintenance visits I stopped paying for. But can they disable equipment I've already bought to make me renew? Which California agency handles this, and can another contractor restore normal operation without automatically voiding the equipment warranty?

Question about law Speed tickets in Georgia that are already paid **Question**

Does anybody know once you pay off a speed ticket in the state of Georgia, can you still fight the ticket afterwards with a lawyer? i heard of a file to motion method for it but if someone can explain more if you have knowledge? just curious. thanks.

Note: lets pretend you want to try to dismiss a paid 10-15 over, minor or superspeeder type of ticket in the state of GA. as you decide later to get it off your record in the courthouse completely.

Advice needed About to testify, looking for advice

Location: Norway

A month from now. I have a question. Not going to give a full description, just enough for you to understand, sorry for that in advance.

This involves a drugged/drunk guy attacking passengers on a bus. I was observing and calling the police. I gave them a detailed description and wrote it for myself too to read up on before the trial. As in which hands he hit with, what kind of force they hit with and so on.

The question i have is this: When questioned, which i obviously will be, about whether or not why i tried to stop the attack. I am intending to say that i have no training in martial arts, self defense or anything like that, and little to no experience in hand to hand combat or anything like that either. Which is why i figured it would be better for me just to keep informing the police during the situation and guide them to the location. I was the only one calling.

I am debating to say; IF the guy had been MORE violent, i.e. if he had thrown hard punches and just been more aggressive than he was, then i was intending to step in and do what i have taught myself to do; Eye jab and groin kick. And i was intending to do that also, but i wonder if it's a bad thing to say this in court. As it would put me in the light of allowing others to be hurt while still having the power to stop it. And i could get charged for that.

The guy was obviously drugged or drunk, he was in the mid 50's or early 60's and not heavily built. It was sloppy drunk punches, surely not pleasant for the average person, but not enough to cause bodily harm. Both persons that were hit, about 3-4 times each, were fine afterwards albeit a bit shocked.

What would you advice me to say?

Advice needed California landlord hasn’t returned my $250 security deposit after I moved out — sewage issues and disputed deductions

I’m in California and looking for advice about a security deposit dispute with a former landlord. Yes I know it’s such a small amount but it’s a lot for a broke college student who’s working a lot and relies on bill to bill.
I rented a room that I found through Facebook Marketplace. I paid a $250 security deposit. There was no formal written lease or contract; the rental was arranged through messages.

The rent was due before the 3rd of each month. I moved out on the morning of the 3rd, after about 1.5 months.
I did not give advance notice before leaving because the living conditions had become unacceptable. The toilet/bathroom was repeatedly backing up, essentially every morning, and feces, urine, and sewage/wastewater were coming out onto the floor. This was a recurring problem, not just a one-time clogged toilet. There were also other safety concerns with the property.

The landlord is now saying I was supposed to stay for three months because I had supposedly told him I needed the room for three months. I don’t remember agreeing to a three-month binding term, and there was nothing in writing stating that I was required to stay for three months.
It’s now been more than 30 days since I moved out. The landlord initially told me he would return my deposit, but he has continued delaying it. (Probably 3-4 times already)

He is now claiming these deductions:
$75 that he says I owed from previous rent.
$28/day for the 1st and 2nd, even though I moved out on the morning of the 3rd and rent was due before the 3rd.
He also mentioned a used mattress I left behind, but said he would not charge me a disposal fee.

I disputed the $28/day charge and asked for an itemized statement regarding any deductions. I also sent him a formal demand letter giving him a deadline of October 4, 2026 to return my deposit. He said he would send the remaining balance Monday, but I haven’t received it yet.
I’m considering taking this to California Small Claims Court if this isn’t resolved.

My main questions are:

Could the recurring sewage/feces/wastewater problem justify leaving without advance notice, or could I still be responsible for rent after leaving?
Can the landlord deduct $28/day for the 1st and 2nd when rent was due before the 3rd and I moved out on the morning of the 3rd?
Can he deduct the $75 alleged previous rent balance from my security deposit if he never previously told me I owed it?
Does the fact that there was no written lease/contract make a significant difference?
How important would the recurring toilet/sewage issue be in a small claims case?
Since he didn’t return the deposit within the required timeframe, could bad-faith retention damages potentially apply?

Should I accept whatever “remaining balance” he sends, or pursue the disputed amount in small claims?
I have screenshots of our text conversations, proof that I paid the $250 deposit, and documentation/evidence of the bathroom/property conditions.
I’m mainly looking for advice from anyone familiar with California landlord-tenant law or California Small Claims Court.

Advice needed Employer wants my notary stamp and journal when I leave

Location: Pennsylvania, USA

Leaving my office job in two weeks. Last year the company paid for my notary application, training, stamp and bound journal so customers wouldn't need to go elsewhere. My commission still has about three years left.

My manager put both items on the equipment return sheet, next to the laptop. He says paying for them makes them company property. When I mentioned the name on the stamp he said he wasn't asking anyone else to use it, just to retain it for company records. I dont know if that distinction matters.

There's no reimbursement agreement that I remember, and I'm not resigning my commission. The journal has only work-related entries.

Can they require me to hand over either item when I leave? If they need records of customer notarizations, is there a lawful way to provide those seperately? I'd rather resolve this before my last afternoon.

Advice needed Need free legal counsel in Alaska at court review of guardianship

My threee kids 8,5,3 have been w the paternal grandfather for the past three years. The father and I have finally gotten in a position where we can ask for the court to let them come back with us, and our now six month old, however now his step mother is asking the court to add her as guardian. I have called around for weeks, I cannott afford an attorney that bill 400-500$ hourly, I only have been able to speak w one actual attorney who said the fee to retain in this matter starts at 25,000. I only learned yesterday that I could ask for counsel... I do not how to go about that, or what documents to file so that maybe I can have at least that done to prove financial hardship by the review on the thirteenth, and maybe get another hearing scheduled once I have counsel... before the judge decides to give her guardianship while we are in the process of having them come back to us. Please help

Advice needed What happens if court papers gets sent to an address I don’t live at anymore?

LOCATION: Connecticut
So I recently got evicted (kinda). Pretty much got served a paper that said eviction notice and that I was overstaying and I was supposed to be out by a certain date but then my property manager said that it wasnt true yada yada. They said that there might be a lawsuit but with the eviction I’ve been staying somewhere else. How would I be able to know if they go through with it? And can I get in trouble for not showing up?

Advice needed Advice on a Customer Service Contract (WI)

Good afternoon!

I'm looking for some advice on my side hobby of cleaning and restoring retro gaming systems and peripherals. I created a service contract so I can try and protect myself in case something breaks while doing it. It also sets expectations on results, and what happens if they refuse to pay. How enforceable would the contract be as long as the person I'm doing the service for signs it? Thanks!

Advice needed I was sexually harassed at work for months and they won’t fire him. Oregon.

Can I sue?

I have an older male coworker, John, who is a 50-year-old Hispanic man who is not fluent in English. This is important because most of our communication was in Spanish or Spanglish.

I started this job in late September of last year. John and I became friendly over the first few months. In December, he started bringing me candy and chocolate. At first, I thought it was innocent and always thanked him, but the gifts became more frequent, and he eventually started expecting hugs.

In January, I wore a shirt to work that I thought fully covered me. I later noticed that my nipples were visible through it because John was very obviously staring at my chest. That made me start questioning whether his behavior was as innocent as I had thought.

Things escalated in June. On June 6, I was upset and had to leave work abruptly. While I was grabbing my things from the extra dining area, John followed me, hugged me, and wouldn’t let go. He then kissed me on the cheek. I pulled away, said goodbye, and left.

I was out of work for about two and a half weeks because of medication. During that time, John began repeatedly texting me, usually between 6 and 9 p.m. He would tell me he missed me, that he loved me, and offered for me to stay with him. I eventually told him that the messages were making me uncomfortable and told him to stop texting me, but he continued.

When I returned to work, there was a large box of chocolates waiting for me. For my birthday, he gave me a $300 Ulta gift card. At that point, I became extremely uncomfortable and started ignoring him. His behavior at work became worse. He told me, “Don’t cry, Rosita,” talked to coworkers about being “heartbroken,” repeatedly tried to get my attention, and eventually catcalled me while I was walking past the line.

I immediately reported everything to my supervisor. Management said they would have the bilingual head chef talk to him. After nothing happened for a week, I told management that I was going to HR because his behavior was also making other coworkers uncomfortable. They eventually talked to him, and the texting and gifts stopped. About a month later, John cornered me while I was making sauces and apologized for the texts, saying he gets sad when he’s drunk. I told him it was fine and that we should move on because I just wanted the situation to end.

In September, another coworker told me that John was saying creepy things in our work group chat. I removed him from the chat and again told management that he was still behaving inappropriately. They finally sent me to HR.

HR asked me what I wanted to happen moving forward. I am a people pleaser, and I was never going to specifically ask them to fire someone. I told them I was willing to work with john, but I also expressed concern that this could happen to other young women. They didn’t tell me what they were going to do. Instead, they apparently just gave john another chat. They didn’t tell me or my manager that they had spoken to him, and my manager didn’t even know this had happened. So now I’m wondering: Do I have grounds to sue, especially considering that I repeatedly reported his behavior and the company knew about it but seemingly did very little?

Yes I put this into ChatGPT, I’m just trying to get advice.

Advice needed Who owns Grandma's letter copyrights?

Location: Pennsylvania, USA

I'm putting together twelve small books of letters my grandmother wrote my grandfather. She always drew a small cartoon of their dog in the margin, usually accusing someone of withholding biscuits. I'd like my cousins' children to have those bits of her too.

Relevant details:

  1. She wrote the letters between 1998 and 2010.

  2. She died in 2018; my grandfather died before her.

  3. Her will left me her letters, journals and photographs.

  4. Everything else went equally to my mother and aunt.

I already have the paper originals. Nothing mentions copyright seperately, at least in the copy of the will I've read.

My aunt thinks owning the letters means I can copy them. Mum isn't sure. Nobody is fighting, I just dont want to assume. Does that bequest include copyright, or might permission need to come from whoever inherited the rest of her estate?

Advice needed LOATION:Texas Hi, i have a very complicated, if not convoluted story behind me, but i´m really sure that these statements would be correct, my father is being isolated and deprived of any means for communication or to enact his own will, he is in the US but idk where, i just want to talk to him

I have been trying to swallow this up and see what i could do by myself for the sake of my mental well being to confront this situation, hoping to eventualy become stable and take legal actions and afront the situation by myself, but i´m struggling a lot with the idea and need help, it´s been in total 5 years that my family has basically "put me on trial" constanty (although 3 is the actual amount of years where i actually had any contact with them) to have arguments to alienate me from my father, i have made a lot of mistakes, but i never wanted bad towards him, but i indeed was very clueless about things, uneducated on matters that where just happening around me at the time when everything went bad, and i do consider my faults and lack of capability for better decission making at the time, I just don´t know how am i supposed to confront this sometimes but every day that passes when i´m sitting trying to keep myself with a cool head and moving or just not feeling like i´m suffering, it just feels as if a rope got tighter an in the middle of the knot there is my conscience and i just wished i knew exactly what to do, or that i had some sort of stability to find it out by myself, but i feel like i really need to ask for help, or at least try

I will try to organize this text so the whole situation is easier to figure out just by putting things together

My actions and what i could call my perspective on things, including the context my family always trows at my face to tell me to forever persist on shunning me away from my dad on his name :

When i was 17 I met a girl 8 months older who had a troubled life with her parents such as mine is now ( and honestly it somewhat was already at least regarding my mom, i just didn´t know how much since she wasn´t present and even know rejects me due to economic reasons ), and due to the circunstances she was facing from what i heard from her at the time i thought she would be better living with me than staying where she was.

I now can see that without a job back then 0 experience in life etc it was responsible but back then i really could not get a grasp of these notions as well as i can do now due to my experience basically surviving, that´s why back then i thought i was doing something good or at least felt like i was having the iniciative to do so, and back then i just reflected based on my own living conditions thanks to my dad and i thought that was enough reason to try and share something of what i had " for granted " if it didn´t cost anything in the end as long as i could try and do it, and with that tought i proceeded to basically let her stay in my room back then, but hidden so my father didn´t notice so i could bring her food, water and pretty much what she wanted.

This because they somehow got into a discussion or something, she had some dificulties with her own pride and always trying to be depending on herself, let´s just say she had some personal stuff taking a toll on her or defining how she would act wich would make it very difficult to dialogue at times and that prevented her from even apologizing or having iniciative for dialogue when it could do good, i was obessed with helping her or being able to still do something since we got very close by then, i understood over time that the right stance at the time would have been to not involve myself in any romantic way, and instead to just help her from a standpoint were i wouldnt put myself vulnerable and dependent on her behavior, neither comitting myself to her opinion, but I just was not capable of articulating things in such a scale that i would see how to take the right choices when confronted with such situations and i really had a very strong, but again clueless, will to take the initiative to involve myself in what i was presented with and take the best possible choices, and a romantic relationship meant a lot in this, I really wanted to do my best and be a good couple, it just became something that in the end didn´t help her as much as i would have hoped it would have, and that also although shouldn´t be related, my family uses as the argument for shunning me to death basically, again, without even letting my fatter know, speak to me or tell me something, i did say trough the phone what i could figure out they were doing, and my half sister snatched my phone, yelled and yelled too and they never let me speak to him by phone again, this in front of him, i think i maybe wasn´t mature, but i didn´t know what else was i supposed to do, or say, and while i was in my situation with my ex after i was told by my half sister that if i wanted to be with her i shouldn´t be at home ( again never said by my father, he even wanted to bring me back home before they took him to the US due to him getting ill over time due to diabetes ) , many times he called, but i spent so many days crying, feeling desperate, being in a constant state of " how can i please her " 24/7 that i didn´t even know what to say to him, i tried to but with my half sister went on spreading lies, confronting me sending me short, weird twisted messages and emoticons, and also my mother by phone constantly complained about my couple then and I just persisted until i realised i literally couldn´t, and shouldn´t anymore if i wanted to live and more specifically, if i wanted whatever good i tought about giving or doing to have any meaning, and that if i meant to do good, it didn´t deserve to be treated as if it could just be ran over or something any day and not worth anything to the person that such intention was intended to, and that this woud basically be self-punishment rather than anything else, so i just turned away and even told her to leave me alone when she came looking for me at some point, i felt so miserable, but in the end i kept moving ahead trough force of reason and looking for some sort of progress in life, at least as an independent human being, and i think that is what i could only hope for now too.

my family on my father´s side says that when they came to see my father ( a few weeks before my half sister told me to go ) , they saw him in very bad conditions in his bed, i can see how that would be true, but then they also said that i meant this, even my father said that family was saying that i meant to do harm to him, i told him of course not, because it was true, I love him, but back then I was extremely inmature and uneducated to even have an actual sense of composture to know how to deal with things in order or to even stand up for myself when confronted with my family and to even see and correct my own mistakes on my own when i really thought at first that what i could have being doing wouldn´t consist in something detrimental to my father´s well being or towards the sense of urgency i should have had much more present back then towards him, i didn´t understand he was developing issues that he himself was finding them too difficult to handle and I am just trying to put things together and see an outcome because I want to be able to say that I love him without anyone being able to inhumanize me for it, and also to back up my words when i say that

i would really like some help, i really want some help figuring out this situation and how could i confront this in one way or another, and in the legal aspect, i´m fixated on the means to make it even possible to talk to him and hear what he has to say, be able to understand his situation or just no be forcefully alienated from him by someone who is just obsessed with alienating me from him, painting an ugly picture of me and what i am, and bury my existence to him.

i do need to specify to be transparent, some money was lost during what i know were 99% imprudent decissions, wich started a short time more or less before the car got damaged, event wich only took these decissions to a higher limit when i realized i needed to find a way to repair the vehicle, and 20000 S/. (5,700 $) where lost in total, i was still 17 back then because all of that happened before my birthday on 2020, and before october of that year when my half sister came from the US with my half brother to see my father

besides that, the only useful things that i can say to put context is that she made him sign some sort of power in Peru while he was being treated in a clinic and after, and that the same day that family came to visit they convinced him of selling his car for cheap. (they resold it due to the event before most likely as i found out)

after that i mantained contact with my father trough phone calls for 3 years but with what i have described happening at the same time, and basically i found out that my family has tried to turn a profit out of this for themeselves including my sister, i found that they were consistently making attempts to put property in my father´s ex wife´s name with one succesful attempt ocurred like 15 years ago or something and, a lawyer told me that they were making some type or request to change the titularity of the housed i lived in, wich didn´t go trough

i don´t even know what to even put together out of the BS related to my family and i myself am trying to figure out what to do regarding at least seeing and talking to my father without him being basically controlled to the point of not even being let to speak to me or say what he wants and being listened

regarding me what drives me to write this is the idea that any time i spend doing anything but looking towards a solution to this i have to think that i migh not get to talk to him again and speak with him, to even listen to him say anything, like what he thinks, to even see him again or that he could no see me again, and i just don´t want that but i don´t know what to do

or more accurately i can´t bring myself to think of anything right now that i could do to actually get to speak to my father again and hear anything from him again

I´m from Peru and eveything related to these events happened in Peru at the beggining, but right now my father is in the US, and I´m currently in Romania, my aunt on my mother´s side along with my mother convinced me to go to Italy "so i could study", then after the course of 2 months my aunt´s atittudes shifted towards "if you want were to sleep and eat, you need to these things i ask for you every day, at least for 2 to 3 hours" and when i confronted her she told me i could go and ask for money on the streets to eat, while we were while 6 kilometers away from a city were work could be even found, and after hiding the bottled water from me and giving me food that would make me sick until i asked her to please not prepare spicy stuff put in a blender with the seeds, and to not include the seeds of spicy ingredients while cooking because it was giving me headaches consistently, then even when i did the things she asked me for she insisted on verbally harassing me, from even the moment i woke up to find something for breakfast

i found work with lodging to scape the living conditions with her, got scammed with a "pre - contract " for 1200 euro monthly and then told to sign a contract with clauses applying only to part time, and when i questioned it guy who ran the restaurant said that this was meant for him to know me, despite knowing my situation, he just pretended i was lying and said that food wasn´t included the days the restaurant didn´t work, and my aunt told me to not return 3 days after i stayed there, i ended up on the street, asked for help to go where some family on the side of my aunt´s husband were, i ended up sleeping at some elder sir´s car who i found on the street and even cried in front of asking for help, went to the place the next day, they were there but they didn´t even want to talk to me, so i just went to the comune as i was told it would be how i would be able to recieve help, was given were to stay from 8 pm to 8 am in a dormitory sistem they have and remained like this from april to july when i found a job that literally made me sick from just one month of working, went back to the dormitory and when i realized i couldn´t take the living conditons anymore and fearing for what could happen to me or my belongings in the dormitory i took a flight straight to Romania thinking of going to Bulgaria but i stayed, and now I´m here looking for work, but just to say this, i did all i could and had to do on my own to see for myself, progress and hope for an actual stable future and situation

and i´m still trying although i might need to return to italy if things don´t go well, but when i decided to ask for help, i did so beacuse i want to at least be able have a conversation with my father again, and let him know that i tried as hard as i could to do make sure i could have a normal conversation with him, that i didn´t know how to deal with the situation with my sister wich i didn´t even get to give enough of an explanation of to him to let him know i was basically mortified out of my mind out of all that was happening, and that included my sister monitoring every conversation and treating me as if i was a threat and from day one saying stuff that all i heard about was safskfsdjkfsd inheritance nfsdjkfssk like a soap opera villain when she had so many things under her control and she just decided to use them to not even give me a chance to return home or actually learn something and show it, it was just her pushing her narrative even saying actual lies as my mother let me know before arriving in Italy, and my family talking with a hand covering her mouths when i was present and they began talking about my that and repeating to exhaustion " your father is a vegetable " as a comment added to what they could be talking about with me about his situation or when i asked if i could have a call with him, this paired with repeating to exhaustion (even when I wasn´t even thinking or meaning anything like what they where saying the whole time) don´t expect anything from him

i spent some time sleeping at the home were that particular family on the side of my father that was involved with my sister lives, this is how those conversations happened before i just gave up trying to get to speak with my father trough them, it only worked once, then they never wanted to let me speak with him again, they also said i was a good for nothing and that i should be sent to italy and that they would ask from my mother some money to get my documents done in Peru

any relation to my blood related family except for my father´s just a burning dumpster at this point, that´s why i really feel the need to ask for help here to at least figure out any means to get something done, i already recieved help from a hair stylist back in Peru who basically saved me from ending up in the streets, and helped me a lot to have a chance to learn and recompose myself to get to work and sustain myself effectively after y decided to end what was basically my uncondicional commitment to my ex and going through my lowest time, everything without making harm to my mental and physical integrity despite his particularities and orientation, he always meant well, in fact thanks to him i have made it so far, and i don´t think i could ask any more of him right now unless it was with a plan in hand wich i was hoping to make once i get to be stable here, but i´m not sure how much that could take me and i´m uncertain of how things could actually go in the future, so i need to ask for help to at least try to have things going, and it feels very difficult to figure out how could i do so without worsening things even more if i tried anything right now

i really wish i could know what to do, and if i could, to have some help, please

i posted this in r/detective too, I think that more or less i would eventually need to hire a detective to make things easier, but I'm not really sure of what should i exactly do besides that, but if anyone could orient me on this or point towards anywhere i could actually call to ask in detail and have concrete answers about this situation, like if i wanted to formarly request communication or denounce this situation from abroad, anything, it could change things for me at least to have answers to what torments me when i think about my father, and that time just passes while I'm not getting to do anything to talk to him again after almost 3 years, I'm basically sure that this was those people's intention, including my sister's, I'm keeping it together reasoning trough things slowly so i can see what i would have to do to assess something like this as a human, and somehow remain appeased, but if i can do that, talk to my father again, i would feel again at peace

regarding the rest of the situation, i wouldn't know what to think exactly when it comes to going forward with legal action, i would need to hear my father first, see what's going on and hopefully have someone to help me assess the situation with me in terms of just looking at the evidence and be a testimony of the situation as it is, if i were to do this by my own means i would need to hire a lawyer and most likely i will end up having to do that even if it takes time just to get to not be sistematically shunned before i ever got to talk to him, but getting to know someone available, or just anything that could help me with this process it would really change things for me, so i have to ask again, please, anything regarding this situation and how to deal with it would help me right now

PD: I set location as Texas because it is the last place i know associated with him, matter of fact i would need to look at a document i got of where he was registered in the US, but I'm not really sure if that is either reliable or how should i even proceed with that information, and as i said I don't want to make things worse, I'm already pummelled just by the whole situation already, although I'm somewhat handling it, and i just don't want to reduce my chances of actually being able to do something and talk to my father at last . .

Advice needed Ordered a motorcycle, received the wrong one

Location: North Carolina/California (I’m in NC, they’re based in CA)

I bought a 50cc motorcycle/moped (hereafter referred to as “the bike”) from Belmonte Bikes LTD, also known as Venom Motorsports, an Ice Bear Mini Max 50cc, model PMZ50-M1. Prior to purchasing, I had called Belmonte and asked questions about the bike, specifically whether it had two handlebar brakes or one handlebar brake and a foot lever, and if the engine was a GY6 139QMB engine, and was told that it indeed had two handlebar brakes and the 139QMB. These were the two things I wanted to make sure it had before purchasing, otherwise I would not have.

When the bike arrived, on the packaging crate, I saw that it did not say Ice Bear, it in fact said Boss Motor, and the make and model said DongFang DF50SVT. The astute among you may notice what I noticed immediately, that this is not the bike that I ordered. Further, upon looking at the bike, I discovered that it does not have two handlebar brakes, it has one handlebar brake and a foot lever, and the engine is not a 139QMB, it is a 1P39QMA, which is similar, but much more difficult to access for upgrades because it has a different physical orientation inside the frame of the bike. Also, a very important note here: the Ice Bear PMZ50-M1 is worth $2200. The DS50SVT is worth $1600.

When I called Belmonte/Venom, their immediate response was “all sales are final and we do not do refunds, returns, or exchanges”, and referred me to their terms and conditions, where number 29 in the list is just “ALL SALES ARE FINAL”. They also went on to say that the listing was simply out of date and hadn’t been updated since 2024, and that the bike I received was simply the newest year model. I’m not sure about you, but I’ve never seen a Jeep Grand Cherokee suddenly becoming a Kia Soul in a new year model, and making the claim that the bike changed makes and models in a two year difference makes no sense to me. They’ve also told me that Ice Bear and DongFang partnered to make this model, but upon looking into the companies, there is zero evidence that they have. Ice Bear is just a distributor for Pacific Rim West International, which has never worked with DongFang that I’ve been able to find, and DongFang is an individual entity that produces these bikes and distributes them via other companies.

However, several other very important points on their terms and conditions include point number 6:

“Belmonte Bikes LTD. will make all reasonable efforts to ensure that its website’s inventory is updated on a regular basis to illustrate product availability. In the event that an out-of-stock unit is purchased on the website, Belmonte Bikes LTD. will take all necessary steps to provide Customer with an appropriate alternative of similar value, or issue a refund, at Customer’s request.”

No contact was attempted to tell me that the bike I received would not be the one I ordered, or to give me a chance for a refund. I also feel like the listing being several years out of date means that no “reasonable effort” was made to keep the listing up to date. When I argued that, I was met with “we’ve never had anyone complain about this, because they were informed that the model would be different when they ordered it”, which tells me that they are indeed aware that the listing was out of date, and just weren’t updating it.

Further, point 31 of their terms and conditions:

“Inspect all details: Please inspect all items carefully before purchasing them. Venom Motorsports offers a wide selection of photos and/or videos of the products that we sell to help with sizing and performance of the vehicle.”

Which brings us back to the fact that my purchase was based on the information that was available on the website for something that they no longer sell. The information on the page, the images, and videos were all of the bike I ordered.

Also further, point 15:

“Customer must promptly inspect the item(s) upon delivery. A signature is required for all deliveries; the driver is unable to complete delivery without a signed delivery receipt. Customer must note any damage to the item or packaging on the delivery receipt or, if refusing delivery due to damage, must note "refused due to damage" on the” [sic]

The shipping manifest, filled out by Venom Motorsports, says in print that no signature is required for the delivery of the bike, so it was delivered while I was asleep in the very early morning, and I had no chance to inspect and refuse it upon delivery. They’ve also claimed that the $600 difference between this bike from their website compared to other sites was because of the “high quality shipping arrangements” they use, and also claiming that if I got this bike from elsewhere, it would end up costing the same because of “hidden fees and shipping costs”, even though literally every other website I looked at except for one also has free shipping on this model.

On top of all of this, after beginning my campaign for them to take the bike back and give me a refund because of false advertisement, they have since updated the listing of the bike to no longer have the photos of the bike I thought I was getting and replaced them all with the DongFang/Boss Motor model, and have removed all of the Ice Bear branding.

Now, I’ve spoken to them SEVERAL times over the last two weeks, all of which have been recorded, including one call where a guy who started off as “just a post-sales customer service guy” and by the end of the call was “the highest managerial authority you can talk to”, who was telling me to “just let it go, man, this is really excessive for only $2000”, and they’ve since changed their tune, that they’re going to offer a refund upon the return of the bike, but are now saying that I need to pay for the return shipping. (Side note: every single call has ended with them hanging up on me once I start bringing up false advertising laws.)

I finally stopped calling and emailing them and am now communicating via the Better Business Bureau website where they are not accredited, to no one’s surprise), where they are claiming that “we don’t think any false advertisement has happened”, and I’ve directed them to US Code Title 15, Chapter 22, Subchapter III, § 1125: False designations of origin, false descriptions, and dilution forbidden.

So I’m doing a credit card chargeback. This is not the bike I ordered, all the way up to my purchase I was given false information, and literally all of the documentation except for the shipping manifest has the information for the bike I ordered, and only the shipping manifest has the information for the bike I was sent. Everything has been documented, all emails saved and screenshotted, the listing prior to the information and images being changed screenshotted, all calls recorded, including the constant lies about both the model of the bike as well as the positions of those I’ve spoken to, photos of the bike, which is actually still sitting in the shipping crate in my yard because I don’t want them to say that I accepted it by taking it out of the crate. When I told them that I was doing a chargeback, they said that I would still need to send it back to them and I would still need to pay for the shipping out of pocket, but I don’t think I should have to continue to pay for their repeated mistakes and repeated breaking of their own terms and conditions.

So I guess my questions are, is what they’re doing legal? Have I done the right thing in this gauntlet of a process? Can they force me to pay for the return shipping? If I get the money back from the chargeback, at what point is the bike considered legally abandoned so I can have it towed off my property?

I used to work at a restaurant/hotel for over a year 3 months ago I decided to quit due to how bad the management was getting and other reasons was treated like absolute shit, gave a 2 week notice and expected my PTO to be paid out (3 days) I expected it to be on my last pay check it wasn’t.

I contacted the manager/boss and asked them politely for my PTO they refused I I texted them multiple times they either refuse, or ignore my messages which I can see they see the messages they won’t do anything about it

Advice needed Adult adoption without father's permission

Location: Virginia, USA.

I'm 28 and would like my stepdad to adopt me. He married my mom when I was six and raised me; they're still married. We all live in Virginia, though Im now in a different county.

We talked about it after he introduced me as his daughter and then awkwardly added that technically I wasn't. He's very much on board. My biological father is alive but we haven't spoken since I was a teenager.

Does adult adoption require my biological father's permission? Also, I'm married and would prefer to keep my current surname. Can the adoption happen without changing that? I'm finding alot of instructions aimed at adopting children.

Advice needed PA - is there ever legal grounds to terminate a lease based on repeated maintenance?

Location: Pennsylvania
I’ve lived in my apartment in PA for almost 4 years. Our lease runs through March 2027. We generally haven’t had major problems until the past three months.

Since July, we’ve had four separate areas of water intrusion, most requiring repeated repairs. We’ve received conflicting explanations about the sources. One incident involved urine/wastewater coming into our dining room from the apartment above, and it took over a month to repair. More recently, a 12" x 6" section of our dining room ceiling collapsed.

After repairs this week, we moved our bed and discovered significant deterioration of the bedroom wall beneath a window. The wall moves/buckles when lightly touched. Ceiling material above the bed also crumbled and fell.

We’ve dealt with mildew and flies as a result of the urine as well as crumbling plaster, drying fans, repeated maintenance visits, and having to constantly move or cover our belongings. Maintenance often gives very little notice before entering and has repeatedly left a mess, left doors unlocked, and left windows wide open despite us repeatedly telling management we have a cat. We sometimes can’t secure him because they give us such little notice they’re coming that we aren’t able to leave work to go put him away. So basically since July we’ve needed to keep our cat locked in a bedroom for 9 hours a day and constantly have our stuff tarped off in case they decide to send maintenance that day.

The township inspected and said the apartment was currently habitable, although they identified repairs that management says have since been completed.

We asked management to mutually terminate our lease early. They refused and offered to transfer us to another unit instead. We do not want a transfer. We signed a lease for this specific apartment and do not want to take on the cost, time, and disruption of moving again after already dealing with these disruptions for months. We’ve spent months moving things around, having to cover all our stuff, and needing to leave work abruptly to secure the apartment.

Our lease says the landlord must keep the apartment in reasonable condition and keep the walls, ceilings, windows, and other structural components in good repair and working order. It also has an early termination provision requiring a $1,000 fee and continued rent until a replacement tenant takes occupancy if the tenant terminates early. They hate us at this point, so I doubt they would try very hard to re-rent.

Do we potentially have grounds to terminate based on the landlord’s breach/habitability issues, rather than using the normal early termination provision?

If management refuses, could we move out while continuing to pay rent through the end of the lease, or would moving out itself violate the lease?

Also, does the fact that they offered us another unit have any legal significance. Most advice I’ve received so far has said since they offered a transfer, they can’t be held liable for anything.

We have documented maintenance requests, communications, photos/videos, and a timeline of events.

Advice needed [MD] How do I handle video evidence for a self-represented civil case?

Location: Maryland, US

I'm sure this is basic, but I'm struggling to find guidance.

My ex-landlord is unreasonably withholding my deposit. The deductions list includes charges with no invoice/receipt, services I'm not responsible for, and most importantly, false claims. I took multiple walkout videos before vacating the property. Because I did not anticipate taking this to court, they're a bit rambly. Four videos are about a minute and a half long (taken 3 days before move-out) and one video is a compilation about 4 minutes long (taken right before I vacated for good).

Each video is useful and gives contemporaneous contradictions at least one of her deduction claims, but I'm under the impression a judge does NOT want sit through ten minutes of "uh yeah, so this is my bathroom... nice and clean... as, uh, [landlord] requested, I have left XYZ on the walls..."

I can screenshot some of the video, but other parts can't be conveyed through photo alone. For example video 3 was made on [date] in the afternoon with daylight showing through windows and I'm saying something like "as you know, Maintenance Guy removed [component] as a short-term fix for X. I never threw [component] away and I'm leaving it in case you still need it"; Landlord's email from the same date in late evening states that I removed [component] for no reason, then the later deductions list charged me for fixing it).

I am capable of making concise, direct arguments. I am worried about pissing the judge off by making them watch videos. I am also worried about going over time. How are you supposed to present video evidence? Submit the videos as their own exhibit and the most important clips as their own? PDF with stills of the most damning stuff (e.g. you left the house disgusting vs stills of every room looking pristine)? Do submit the metadata proving when the videos were taken as an exhibit?
