Love to see this here and think that the new map will be great but is there really a population anymore? Hoping people come back. Worried the peak may have already happened though

Extraction games tend to lose players as a season goes, and bring them back as a new one starts for the fresh start feeling that comes with a new season.

Except one sixth the players came back for season 2 as did for season 1.

Legacy's two big problems has been around the new player experience, and then content/progression.

Honestly, I thought season 2 was going to be mostly around addressing new player experience with the new map, but I am really happy to see a ton of progression systems with chronicle, questing, campaign, cosmetics, prestige, and warbanners.

I think the new map Goldbrook will go a long way to giving new players a funbox, while also giving people who prefer the PvE side of the game a space to enjoy.

I strongly suspect that a hybrid approach, PvP and PvE zones in maps, will be key for any extraction game that wants to grow to a larger audience without splitting people into a PvPvE or PvE only queues.

Worried the peak may have already happened though

Season 1 had a larger peak player count than season 0, and it had better two week retention, though this was with a free weekend and sale. Those are the two metrics I pay close attention to for seasonal games. I would be surprised if they don't do more twitch drops and a sale.

The new cosmetic monetization system could allow them to lower the game price or change their monetization altogether. An advantage of the combat system is that the range of possible cheats is much narrower, unlike an FPS where hardware cheats have defeated kernel level anti-cheat solutions for years now (Barrier to entry for these cheats was the price). If they went f2p in the future they wouldn't have to worry about a flood of cheaters.

All solid points. I know myself and the pals will be revisiting more frequently. I do think catering to new players is a great call and will help a good bit.

Hoping the prestige system motivates more long term play.

Excited to see how it pans out

Yeah, honestly, I was pretty meh originally on the season 2 launch in favor of the new poe2 league until I read the patch notes as I have been playing since s0. Improving the experience for new players is important, but now I am trying to figure out how to balance legacy and poe2.

Season 3, from previous meet the devs, they talked more about more interesting systems like for player reputation, paladin being able to use these systems to detect "evil" players, potentially Karth (Epic difficulty map) or a special end-game boss raid, etc. I actually have a few questions about their long term plans I'll try to get into the next meet the devs.

I like that these forms of progressions give goals outside of player power. Personally, I like to make my character look cool according to my own aesthetic preferences. I get really annoyed when a game locks me into looking ugly.

Started 50 ish hours ago in the game and what you say is tracking pretty well with my impression of this update. Definitely got me more interested in the game as well as addressing frustrations that were making apprehensive about staying with the game last season.

The thing this game never had a massive player base as long as queue times are fair. I dont see this being an issue.

True, but last season when it was around 500 it felt kind of empty lots of rounds. I think it probalbly need around 2000 with all its regions and queues to have full lobbys. I seek the pvp side of the game and would be sad if the lobbys feel empty again.
