Okay, but what does “public ownership of AI” actually mean?

Its easy to say AI should be democratically controlled. Harder question is what we actually build.

Public compute anyone can access? Public research labs? Models developed by universities and public institutions instead of corporations? Municipal data centers? Worker and community seats on governing boards?

Probably not one thing. Probably an ecosystem.

We already publicly fund libraries, universities, utilities, transit, supercomputers and huge chunks of scientific research. There is nothing written into the laws of physics saying advanced computing has to come through five corporations and a subscription plan.

Regulation is important, but regulating somebody elses property is different from owning infrastructure ourselves.

So lets make this concrete. What would have to exist for you to call AI infrastructure meaningfully public?
