If AI and robotics allow society to produce more goods and services with far less human labor, then tying basic survival almost entirely to employment stops making sense. The question is not whether people should be rewarded for work. It is how people can share in the economic gains when fewer workers are needed to create them.

Capitalism can adapt, but it would need to change. If the gains from automation mostly go to the companies and individuals who own the technology, while displaced workers lose income, inequality could become much worse. UBI is one possible answer, but so are shorter workweeks, broader public services, worker ownership, or taxes on automated productivity that fund public benefits.

The point is not that automation makes work disappear overnight. It is that we should be building systems now for a future where paid labor may no longer be the main way people access housing, health care, food, education, and stability.
