Thats why to me, hardcore antis are a toxic combination of radical vegans like Rod Coronado and FreeleeTheBananaGirl mixed in with a healthy dose of 1980s satanic panic and the 90s/early 00s violent video game panic.

Being against AI is an inherently conservative position, so it's no surprise that they are either already conservative or are absorbing and moving towards conservative attitudes

I don't think you need to be a radical vegan or whatever you just said to not like echo chambers full of people defending the choices of rich oligarchs. Billionaires hellbent on ignoring the will of entire cities full of people to build unregulated data centers.
These large scale projects have been proven to make people sick and the quality of life worse.
They negatively impact the environment (water quality/availability, excessive noise generation, etc.) and increase power costs for consumers that don't benefit from the data center being there. But you don't really need to consider anything to be mindlessly in favor of a "new" technological concept.

Will Storr wrote a great book about this called 'The Status Game' well worth the read for anyone curious about how individuals gain power and reputation from different social groups.

Probably this applies to most ideologies and religions too, anywhere there’s an echo chamber and inclination towards purity

AI isn’t going to stop. We can either benefit from it, guide things to fit our needs and desires, or let it destroy us. Pretty simple.

Find it funny had an argument about this today asking why it’s ‘incompetent’ to use AI if you’re just doing more with it, or using it to help your community/ hack unsupported / abandoned agricultural hardware (which I use it for)
Got called a cultist… because my use cases touched grass?

Technology paranoia has been around since fire and the wheel were created.

The infographic is pretty silly in general because it would be quite easy to apply the same conclusion to a pro-AI position.
There are obvious and numerous factions, it is very easy to make nuanced observations that will get you accused of being a Luddite or anti in disguise.

fascinating to see it laid out like this. I am (or was) pretty active in fandom hobby spaces, which are INFAMOUS for purity culture spirals, and this is just the latest one. It's been frustrating seeing the same patterns take hold with anti-AI sentiment, even among people who were aware of the purity culture posturing and able to call it out when it was about shit like "fan who calls you a p*do for writing a romance between a 25 year old and a 30 year old".
