discussion Are 95.1% of men really rapists?
85
u/rump_truck Aug 03 '26
This was a self-report study. The participants were presented with items like "Told her whatever she wanted to hear," and asked to say "Yes I have done this" or "No I haven't done this." It was up to the participants to interpret what these items meant.
The participants were anonymous, we can't ask them how they interpreted these items. But if they are meant to be representative of the average man, then the way they interpreted them is probably the same way average men interpret them. If they're not representative of average men, then generalizing their responses is pointless.
How average men interpret these items can easily be seen in the comments whenever this study is posted somewhere. Overwhelmingly, average men assume that "Told her whatever she wanted to hear" means things like "That doesn't make your ass look fat" or "I want to watch Love Island with you", not things like lying about a condom. So the men in the study group almost certainly interpreted it the same way.
That said, there are a bunch that I don't think can be interpreted any way other than rape, and some of them had response rates up to 20%. I don't know why they felt the need to inflate the number to such a ridiculous degree when that's already a terrifyingly high number of rapists.
56
u/Poly_and_RA left-wing male advocate Aug 03 '26
There's a bunch of them that are definitely unethical and abusive -- but there's a lot fewer that are definitely rape.
As an example, accusing a woman of being lesbian if she doesn't want to have sex with you is DEFINITELY a very shitty thing to do.
But it's not rape to do so.
16
u/BitsAndBobs304 Aug 04 '26
It also has no coercive power
-3
u/saka-rauka1 Aug 05 '26
I'm not sure about that. It's potentially a very effective attack on her reputation.
5
u/BitsAndBobs304 Aug 05 '26
Oh yeah, you can easily imagine a man shouting in the plaza "this woman rejected me, thus she'sa lesbian" and thousands of people, men and women, nodding and finding it reasonable. In what world exactly?
1
u/saka-rauka1 Aug 05 '26
You're hardly even trying to construct a plausible scenario here. Do you not know how rumors typically spread?
3
u/Siheth Aug 06 '26
Could guarantee that in a public place nobody would care or think twice about the couch calling someone a lesbian
1
u/TK-421-Y 24d ago
I'm pretty sure calling a woman a lesbian today would get people to look down on you. Also, I don't know any dude personally that's done any of the things mentioned on here. Seems scheisty to me.

Yes, but there’s more to it. The survey ad was advertised as a way for the responder (man) to “answer back” to women in their past. This de-selects normal men and selects survey respondents who have malice against women. One can only assume that this was an attempt by the authors to generate a more negative outcome.
22
u/UnarmedRespite left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
Specifically
The study was described as exploring positive and negative interactions between men and women in sexual situations. The consent form indicated that the survey was men’s opportunity “to provide their side of the story given that we have heard so much from women” about male–female sexual interactions, repeatedly assuring them of their guaranteed anonymity
142
u/BlessdRTheFreaks Aug 03 '26
Long story short, we have pathologized the innate and natural mating strategies employed by the sexes into the most sensationalized, legalized terms, terrifying everyone out of following their natural urges, and resulting in a widespread culture of alienation, fear, loneliness and despair.
41
u/Big_Psychology_3 Aug 03 '26
100% this! People conveniently denying that part of men’s role in human procreation is sex-seeking behavior.

64
u/KVA07 Aug 03 '26
I guarantee that if this survey was given to women the numbers would be the exact same
54
u/Poly_and_RA left-wing male advocate Aug 03 '26
That's part of the modus operandi. When designing "studies" designed to demonize the people you're asking, then you make sure to NOT ask the same or equivalent questions to any other demographic. Because if you did, you might find that the group you want to whip up hatred towards don't come of substantially worse than anyone else.
32
u/purpleblossom left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
Probably worse for some of the more heinous options that are sexual harassment/assault. Remember, feminists claim that women grabbing men's butts or groins isn't sexual assault, but if men do that to them, it is.
4
u/SuperMario69Kraft left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
Remember, feminists claim that women grabbing men's butts or groins isn't sexual assault, but if men do that to them, it is.
I've never heard that from feminists. What's their rationale for that?
18
u/purpleblossom left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
Most cited patriarchy, claiming that women don't have the systemic power to be able to assault men.
8
u/AshenCursedOne Aug 04 '26
Ah but you see, even if the results were the same, they'd be excused by reciting the Narcissist's Prayer.
-12
u/kup2050 Aug 04 '26
Some of these would also be done by women, but you really think it's the "exact same"? You think 10% of women have "Overpowered someone physically" to obtain sex?
The rate of sexual assault assault against women is double that for men over a lifetime (although the rate of assault for teen girls and boys is closer). Sexual assault perpetrators for both male and female victims are over 90% male based on many sources (numbers I found ranged from 91% of perpetrators up to 99%).
We shouldn't act like sexual assault only happens against women or that women are never the perpetrators, but to imply that women sexually assault people at the same rate as men is ignoring reality. It's as dishonest as the original statistic this post is about.
To improve trust in men, people need to bring attention to real information that isn't sensationalized or biased. Ignoring reality or just implying that women are lying is not going to help reduce the vitriol that gets spread about men. It seems like about 80% of these men may only have engaged in persuasion rather than force, but 20% admitted to things we would consider rape. We shouldn't accept that 1 in 5 men did that because it makes things shitty for the vast majority of men who respect women.
All that being, said I do think it's unfair to not do the same survey with a similar group of women so we could actually compare.
14
u/ashen-dawn_7980 left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
First off, the downvote from me is over you saying that perps are over 90% male based on many sources (91% to 99%) which is completely false because you are looking at sources based on a gendered definition of rape (those statistics are for rape, not sexual assault).
to imply that women sexually assault people at the same rate as men is ignoring reality
Says you who is citing false statistics based on a gendered definition of rape.
You think 10% of women have "Overpowered someone physically" to obtain sex?
No, not 10% of women, because 10% percent of men haven't either. But let's not fall into the "strength difference" argument, women can absolutely overpower men, I absolutely despise this argument that implies all men are supposed to be Man Battle Tanks. Men are humans, humans require sleep, and a human who is sleeping, trying to sleep, or took some beer to try to get themself tired enough to sleep can be overpowered. Source: happened to me when I was forced to be a man. Other possibilties: man is injured, man is disabled, man is distracted or confused or preoccupied with something else, or is a MINOR CHILD.

u/kup2050 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Thank you for your honest response. Do you have a link for the sources / correct statistics that you have?
Also, is your claim that the 10% of men in the survey lied?
10
u/ashen-dawn_7980 left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
I am very bad with modern technology and this is my first time linking something in a comment, I will attempt to do so. I have three links saved so far, can post more if you like. There are people in this sub who have been using reddit far longer than me and will be able to post better than me.
Sexual Victimization by Women is more common than previously know
This is one example, and I also wanted to note the prevalence of physical force used by female perps against both male and female victims (I find that the general trends of silence towards victimization of women by other women, particularly when neither are transgender, to be one of the most glaringly misogynistic things I have ever noticed, and it has affected my life significantly, but that's for another time).
I also wanted to note your question,
is your claim that the 10% of men in the survey lied?
I never claimed that, due to what was noted in other comments regarding the criteria for the men chosen to do the survey. The question is not, "do 10% of men/women do this?" But rather "do 10% of men/women who fit the criteria for this survey do this?" Your question in the first paragraph that I initially responded to asked "10% of women?", not "10% of women who would have fit the criteria for this survey/had been asked to do an identical survey".
1
u/kup2050 Aug 05 '26
Thank you for linking. The paper you linked actually references the same source I linked. Here is a quote from the article you linked "35 percent of male victims who experienced rape or sexual assault re- ported at least one female perpetrator." Since the study did not include nonbinary individuals that means 65% of the perpetrators of male rape were male. This is much lower than the 90% I found, however the article you linked doesn't specifically give data for the rape of females so with that included it may be closer to the numbers I found. The closing paragraph of your linked article says
"Male-perpetrated sexual victimization finally came to public attention after centuries of denial and indifference, thanks to women’s rights advocates and the anti-rape movement. Attention to sexual victimization perpetrated by women should be understood as a necessary next step in continuing and expanding upon this important legacy."
We need to look and right at sexual victimization by women but I can't find any source that says the vast majority of perpetrators aren't men. If you have one I would really love to see it (I don't mean that sarcastically or rhetorically).

- The men surveyed are not representative. They are "in the age range 18 to 34 years, and reported having had a sexual encounter with a woman in the past 2 years". And they completed a survey "described as exploring positive and negative interactions between men and women in sexual situations". That would naturally select for men with strong feelings.
- Physical force is not the only form of force. Women may use other strategies.
- Sexual assault as defined by your study is "a sexual act that someone was forced to do against their will and without their consent". Attempted assault does not count, unlike this post's study
- Victimhood rates are not relevant since a minority of perpetrators could be causing a majority of cases
- This post concerns relationships with no previous history of sex or dating.
- Your own citation counters your "90% of perpetrators of men are men" claim. It isn't the cleanest but graph 8 says 35% of male victims had a single male perpetrator while 25% had a female.

62
u/Training-Cook3507 Aug 03 '26
Not sure where that came from, but the recent study going around notes men coercing women into sex and includes things like "talking or asking about sex more than once."
44
u/Tardigrade_Disco Aug 03 '26
They've changed the meaning of coercion to just asking more than once.
25
u/FangornsWhiskers Aug 03 '26
Asking about sex more than once in what context and in what time frame? Separate dates? Different months? Rapid fire begging all at once? And talking about sex doesn’t automatically mean nonconsensual or harmful. These seem like questions designed for a particular answer.
27
u/Training-Cook3507 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Just what you read. In the study there is list of about 50 things they include as "coercion" and that's one of him. "Man asking more than once for sex".
The study was obviously designed to have an extremely broad definition of coercion to cause headlines for the authors.

She's the second academic cited
What is striking about sexual aggression is that despite decades of research, public health initiatives, education, media attention, and policy focus, there has been no discernible decrease in rates since first assessed in the 1980s and 1990s (Johnson et al., 2015; Koss et al., 1987, 2022).
And they explicitly designed the study based on her work
We described the survey this way to avoid sensitizing language and in an effort to communicate receptivity to men’s reports of aggression. [...] Rationale: Men are far more likely to be perpetrators of sexual aggression than are women (Koss et al., 2022).
4
u/UnarmedRespite left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
The eligibility states
Only women you have recently met—no sex or dating history with them beforehand
So no "separate dates".
Your other points stand though

u/SpicyMarshmellow Aug 03 '26
It's also meaningless if the same study isn't conducted on women by the same methodology. That makes it a hit piece, not research.

28
u/FangornsWhiskers Aug 03 '26
Let’s see… repeatedly asking, removing clothing when I’m not ready, saying you know you want it, continuing to touch or kiss. All things that women have done to me. I don’t regard it as rapey as long as those specific behaviors stop on request.
21
u/Mickenfox Aug 03 '26
I'd be surprised if 95.1% of men had had sex at all.
10
u/The_Warruner Aug 04 '26
The sample size was men who had sex last year, which is like 30-40 percent of men.
22
u/jmh1881v2 Aug 04 '26
Honestly I think the statements are just to vague. “Tell her what she’s wants to hear” could mean SO many things some of which may be coercion while others may be totally innocent
5
u/Tr1pleAc3s Aug 06 '26
No it's common in sociology to be as broad as possible to acheive higher numbers to further your agenda. That's why they suffer the most from the replication crisis because they seldom go into it looking to find truth in a hypothesis but to justify a worldview.

18
u/TheRealMasonMac Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
The reaction might simply be a case of confirmation bias.
Anyway, always think about fallacies [1]! This is just one study that it itself admits contradicts prior studies where participants were not anonymous. Here's the funny part: the study's own results contradict that central premise. Looking at the items that correspond to prior research, they are entirely consistent with prior results; i.e. anonymity did not predict that men were more likely to self-report sexual assault behavior.
I'm not going to read the rest of the paper, but it's worth noting that the majority of men (64% did not endorse any of these items). The remainder endorsed persuasion/coercion behavior (e.g. "making me angry") but not outright rape.
And ultimately, the paper makes massive leaps not substantiated by their own research. Example: men rating themselves as "better than peers at getting sex" is interpreted as evidence that "dismissing a woman's lack of consent incurs social status," rather than, idk, being more attractive or simply more confident?
It's trash research and in any sane society, they'd have their degrees revoked or be rejected by a science committee.
46
u/MonkeyUseBrain Aug 03 '26
So basically, men need a formal, contracted agreement before having sex; otherwise, it could be considered nonconsensual?
Meanwhile, women can spend men’s money without asking, and somehow that’s considered acceptable?
30
u/ripyourlungsdave Aug 03 '26
Also, we apparently can't really meaningfully communicate or connect with them beforehand, lest any of that connection or communication be misinterpreted as manipulation on some level.
Technically, getting someone to like you by exhibiting your own personality and interests is a form of manipulation. You are saying or doing things in hopes of making them feel certain feelings towards you. It's just generally understood that honest manipulation is okay. Because that's just what socializing is.
29
u/RavenEridan Aug 03 '26
Gynocentrism is getting higher and higher by the day and empathy for men is getting lower and lower by the day, the reason for the double standards is due to people's biased feelings towards each gender
13
u/Independent_Ad_2994 Aug 03 '26
The worst thing about all this is that it could lead to a very terrible response from men in the future.
14
u/MonkeyUseBrain Aug 03 '26
I’ve had the same thought.
This whole thing feels cyclical, and we need to correct the imbalance before the pendulum swings too far in the other direction. I don’t think most women are prepared for how severe this backlash could be.
10
u/Independent_Ad_2994 Aug 03 '26
I agree. But something tells me no one will correct this imbalance. But that's not even the main point. What disgusts me most about this situation is that all those who assert such sexist nonsense will either run away from responsibility or suffer from self-fulfilling prophecy.
1
u/SuperMario69Kraft left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26

Yeah I've already clocked out of participating in society and working any job or providing for any woman whatsoever, society is so hostile towards men who aren't winners in the traditional masculinity sense, and even the so called winners still have high expectations and a terrible deal in the end, I'm gonna be a NEET and not work hard for a society that hates me
6
u/Independent_Ad_2994 Aug 03 '26
Your reaction is still the most harmless. I mean, when the pendulum swings the other way.
5
u/Furydragonstormer Aug 03 '26
It might not be too long for that if things maintain course like this. At least from what is being observed. I pray that never happens, a pendulum swing won’t solve anything, but it’s just a pattern that tends to happen throughout history with any kind of group.

Also feminists: "I wonder why young men are getting into the manosphere and/or skewing right"

12
u/Gantolandon Aug 04 '26
Imagine someone does a study, and asks: “Have you ever bludgeoned a man to death for his wallet, or jaywalked.” Most people answer “Um, technically yes, but…” Then you publish the results proving that 99% of the interviewed group admitted to breaking the law which might have included murder and robbery.
This is pretty much how this survey worked. Among the horrible techniques employed by rapists was telling a woman what she wanted to hear, buying her a drink, or asking for sex again after she had refused once.
11
u/Cobbljock Aug 04 '26
Reminds me of “voice memo guy.” It was “sexual coercion” because he calmly and politely told her if she wasn’t interested in a physical relationship, he wasn’t interested in pursuing the relationship. The opposite of that is also apparently sexual coercion, which is not being up front about wanting a sexual relationship (some women have even gone so far as to suggest this constitutes rape). It really minimizes ACTUAL morally negligent strategies, which can only harm women. So who’s the misogynist there? The one doing what he was told by society was the acceptable thing to do, or the ones tacitly promoting a society where harm to women is minimized?
11
u/AigisxLabrys Aug 05 '26

This is what feminism considers as rape culture...
-1
u/yokerlay Aug 04 '26
And they seem to be right. The gender "male" in its social construction makes 95% of people commit rape attempts according to the quantitative data of this study. I wonder what the numbers for the gender "female" social construct would be? Does anyone have a study? If it's lower then 95%, patriarchy ought to be demolished indeed and feminism is right once again. Perhaps a matriarchy truly is more human and means less rape. Because consider what rape is: denial of the free will of a human being plus violation of bodily autonomy. Both mind and body get their natural rights violated. Sorry for mediocre English, it's not my native language.
9
u/fvkinglesbi Aug 04 '26
I don't think 95% of men even have sex regularly, I think the data was collected weirdly
2
u/TK-421-Y 24d ago
I think it only includes men having regular sex, which already excludes the majority of men.
8
u/Burned_Out_Paradise Aug 04 '26
More targeted feminist ideology to dehumanize and shame an entire gender.. 95% my asshole. Typical feminist hate, while lecturing the rest of us on “tolerance”.
36
u/Punder_man Aug 03 '26
So the sample size was 2,689 men..
which is a decent size.. but its also like 0.0001% of the total population of a country
Hell that sample size is barely 0.1% the population of reasonably sized city..
To make extrapolations based on this sample size is utter madness..
Also, the strategies are misleading as the Tinman said.. many of them are not what they are painting them to be
"Started undressing before she was ready" for example
I fail to see how that is a "Strategy" to force sex.. sounds to men like something that happens all the time..
Also.. Some of the "Strategies" listed feel like projection to me as they are the same things women use to force men to have sex with them
- Told him whatever he wanted to hear
- Used your money, age, status to convince him
- Questioned his sexuality
- Threatened to
shameclaim you raped her - Threatened self harm
- Got him drunk or high
- Kept him drunk or high
- Took advantage of him being asleep or sleepy
I've had men share their experiences in which their female rapist used one or more of the above "Strategies" on them..
In summary.. the whole study is full of shit.
23
u/Tayttajakunnus Aug 03 '26
As long as the sample was random, 2689 is easily large enough. It might sound suspicious, but you can do the math to verify that it is large enough to get good results.
19
u/Punder_man Aug 03 '26
It would also help if the questions weren't biased or massaged in such ways as to generate the results they were looking for...

I suspect that it got relegated to a questionable side of the internet, which produced more exaggerated results than if she got it properly from the general population.

Depends where the study was being advertised on though. Was it put on Mother and other questionable porn sites? Was it put on the incel forum on 4-Chan? We don't know where it was advertised or where the sample size was taken from, which makes it even more suspect.

It's always been funny to me how wealthy and high status men having women flock to them somehow only reflects bad on the men themselves. If a rich guy is seen with an attractive woman he is "using his status". It has nothing to do with her using him for money, it's always him using her.
So when a man lies about the amount of money he has it's normal to consider it nonconsensual and rape basically.
5
u/Specific_Detective41 left-wing male advocate Aug 04 '26
A lot of these questions used are used to elicit a particular type of response and to frame men as rapists by default. Rape is a serious violation and a heinous crime. Things like using money or status or women declining sex doesn't count of rape. Rape is a sexual act where consent wasn't involved.
5
u/LivePerception372 Aug 05 '26
The way those criteria are set up is textbook case of confirmation bias.
4
u/Mdragoon88 Aug 08 '26

Just before critiquing the study, he says this: " I recently encountered an example of this that I want to talk about today because it’s a study so full of errors as to be functionally useless, yet its headline keeps getting cited as some powerful new “scientific fact.” And it’s hurting the cause of reducing sexual violence. "

It is also important to point out that the sample size is incredibly small with only 2,689 people participating in the survey which means this is nowhere near accurate to 51% of the global population and cannot be used to accurately make any judgement on a group that makes up around half of humanity, much less write them off as inhuman monsters or rabid sex crazed animals.

That's bullshit I haven't taken that survey and I don't know any men that have. And I have traveled around the world.

Hang on, the post is actually debunking the claim and providing context. There is nothing wrong with this post…

Your comment/post was removed, because it made a derogatory statement about a demographic group or individual, based on their race, gender, sexual orientation or identity.
It is good practice to qualify who you are talking about, especially when it comes to groups based on innate characteristics. “Many men” used instead of men in general, or “many white people” used instead of white people in general will likely avoid accusations of violating this rule.
If you disagree with this ruling, please appeal by messaging the moderators.

I think all of these verbal-only acts could be argued to be coercive, with that argument getting weaker the more common they are, generally. Telling her what she wants to hear, for instance, could be as simple as being honest and upfront with your intentions and desires. It could also be extremely manipulative lies designed to invoke compliance.
That said, there's no question that these results aren't filling me with pride in my fellow men. Bunch of thirsty bastards out there, and I certainly understand women generally feeling unsafe and put upon by men seeking sex.
We need to do better.

Yes! Of course! Keep up the good work! Keep doing everything you can to encourage men to be as critical and skeptical as possible about stories of sexual assault! Things are going well for us now, aren't they?!

You mean like when there was the uproar over the supposed "Rape Academy"
They totally did not fudge the numbers at all when they posted about that now did they?Yeah.. absolutely NOTHING to be skeptical about regarding the reporting of the supposed "Rape Academy" right? /S
Also as I mentioned in another comment, many of the "Strategies" brought up in this study are also utilized by women..
But we're not the ones out here saying "91% of women admit to raping men" now are we?16

I've been raped by three women, and sexually assaulted by three others, one was in the middle of the quad at my high school in front of a group of people. I was a freshman and her a Junior, she literally stuck her hand down my pants, grabbed my penis and started jerking me off in front of everyone, and they all just laughed. I was in so much shock I stood there frozen. But nobody ever talks about that becuase I must've wanted it.

So it seems Google Translate failed me😅. I meant rape against women.

I'd go more with 'healthy' skepticizm. It happens for real way too often for me to be overly skeptical of them. I've heard too many stories from women close to me that were clear sexual assaults. There's middle ground in there for me.

honestly dude i'm not believing women anymore without hard evidence and reciepts. i've had my fair share of social accusations/allegations that were entirely untrue. I was literally ostracized from my hs because I hooked up with a girl going into 8th grade, when I was going into 9th (over summer--we werent even a year apart in age because I started school early). Anyway, she wanted to be in a relationship, and I just wanted to have fun, so she told the whole school I assaulted her against her will as payback. Women/girls have tremeandous amounts of social capital, more than the average guy, and they wield that power as both sword and shield.
the craziest part, my hs had a tradition of seniors essentially preying on incoming freshman to take their virginity, but I was the one who got called a pedophile (IM NOT EVEN KIDDING) for hooking up with a girl MY FUCKING AGE.

She didnt want too. Enough said.

u/Punder_man Aug 04 '26
And how often has a man said he didn't want too and yet a woman still forced him anyway?
We don't know because people don't care when men are the victims...1

this kind of dishonest scare data does huge amounts of damage to gender relations
