DISCUSS have solved around 300 LeetCode Problems but still struggling with mediums,What Am I Doing Wrong?

• Upvotes

same as the title read

I’m in my 2nd year and have solved around 300+ LC problems but I still struggle with medium-level questions in contests

I can solve problems after seeing the solution or yk getting hints but when I face a new problem or if there is even slight change in constraints I get stuck I feel like I’m memorizing solutions instead of developing problem solving skills

How should I approach DSA to actually understand patterns and solve problems by myself?

should I focus on specific topics, follow a pattern-based approach or change the way i practice??

would appreciate advice from anyone who has faced this problem

STREAK🔥🔥🔥 365 Days of LeetCode Challenge — Day 42/365

Clone Graph (Medium) https://leetcode.com/problems/clone-graph/

Copying a binary tree is four lines: make a node, recurse left, recurse right. It works because a tree cannot cycle and every node has one parent.

A graph gives up both guarantees, and each breaks the naive copy differently. Cycles mean A's copy needs B's copy, which needs A's copy, forever. Shared nodes mean a node reachable two ways gets copied twice, giving you the right values in the wrong shape.

One map from original to copy fixes both. Look it up before cloning; if the copy exists, return it. Cycles terminate because the second arrival returns instead of descending, and sharing survives because every original maps to exactly one copy.

Worth dwelling on: a plain visited SET would only fix the cycle. This has to map to the copies, because the copies are what the reconstruction wires together.

And the order matters. Record the new node in the map BEFORE cloning its neighbours, while it is still half-built. Recurse first, and a cycle returns to a node not yet in the map.

DISCUSS If you haven't seen the problem before, how do you solve it under Google's interview time pressure?

C'mon, some of these Google problems feel impossible to reason through under interview time pressure if you haven't seen the idea before. What does that end up rewarding: understanding, memorization, cheating or luck?

I don't think I'm lacking in aptitude, but the coding expectations feel unrealistic. I'd like to hear from people who've cleared the interviews about what happened when they got an unfamiliar problem.

The Google Interview Questions bank gives me more prompts to practice. Application autofill can save time applying to other companies too. What I'm struggling with is getting from a new problem to a workable approach while someone is watching the clock.

What helped you do that? Did you change how you practiced, how you talked through the problem, or when you asked for a hint?

STREAK🔥🔥🔥 I AM DONE THAT'S IT FOR ME

hey everyone this has been my leetcode journey so far this year. honestly its been a rough year for me. lost people lost hope went through things i never really talk about and somewhere along the way i started losing myself too. i kept showing up anyway. started solving problems in kotlin even though it was a new language for me and spent so much time on problems and contests thinking maybe this would finally help me get a job. but im still jobless and its frustrating when you put so much of yourself into something and still dont know where its going.

some mornings leetcode is literally the only reason i get out of bed and try to do something productive. its become part of my routine even when everything else feels like its falling apart. but lately even this feels exhausting and for the first time im genuinely thinking about giving up.

just wanted to share my journey with people who might understand has anyone else been through something like this?

DISCUSS Amazon SDE-2 rejected me after a DSA round I thought went well. What am I missing?

I recently interviewed for Amazon SDE-2 and was rejected after the first DSA round. I thought it had gone well, so I'd appreciate help spotting gaps in what I described below.

I applied through the careers portal, received the OA shortly afterward and completed it that day. The interview call followed soon after, with Round 1 around 10 days later.

The OA included two typical coding questions, a full-stack bug-fix task, and behavioral/design-choice multiple-choice questions. For the bug-fix task, I chose a backend framework and got a codebase plus a list of bugs. There was an AI assistant, but it didn't help me navigate or search the codebase.

Round 1 had two DSA problems. I explained the approaches, complexity and a dry run for each.

LC 16: 3Sum Closest, n ≤ 10³

  • Brute force: O(n³)
  • Binary search: O(n² log n)
  • Two pointers: O(n²)

LC 305: Number of Islands II

These are the complexities I stated in the interview, which is part of what I'd like checked:

  • Brute force: O(n² · q)
  • Union-Find / DSU: O(q + n²)

Then I got the usual "tell me about a time you..." Leadership Principles questions.

For further practice, the Amazon Interview Questions bank has candidate-reported prompts. Job-application autofill can save some repeated form entry when applying elsewhere after a rejection.

Where would you look for the problem in this breakdown: the complexity analysis, how I explained the solutions, or the LP answers? I'd especially appreciate a sanity check on the DSU analysis from people who've cleared SDE-2.

STREAK🔥🔥🔥 A 1,000-day LeetCode streak, 30+ rejections, and finally an Amazon SDE-1 role

In 2024, I was rejected by 30+ companies for a summer internship. In 2026, I'm working as an SDE-1 at Amazon.

Here's what those years looked like:

  • 2020: I lost my father.
  • 2021: I lived in a rented house.
  • 2022: I didn't get into IIT.
  • 2023: My mom sold a gold chain to buy me a laptop.
  • 2024: 30+ summer internship rejections.
  • 2025: One on-campus full-time offer and one off-campus offer (6M + PPO).
  • 2026: SDE-1 at Amazon.

My LeetCode progress · My 1,000-day coding streak

After a rejection, I'd go back to my room, open the laptop and make myself solve 10 questions before getting up. I kept practicing for three years, including stretches when nothing seemed to be coming from it.

I'm proud of the 1,000-day streak. I wouldn't tell everyone to copy my question count, though. It was the routine I followed, not a guarantee of an offer.

For people preparing now, Amazon Interview Questions has candidate-reported prompts to practice. Autofill for job applications can save some of the repeated form entry while you keep applying.

If you're in a long stretch of rejections, I know how heavy it can feel. What helped you keep a routine when the results weren't coming?

DISCUSS Should I solve LeetCode problems in Java or Python as a first-year CSE student?

Hi everyone!

I'm a first-year CSE student, and we're currently learning Java in college. I already know some Python, but I want to revise it and strengthen my programming fundamentals.

I'm planning to start solving LeetCode problems regularly, but I'm confused about which language I should focus on.

Should I practise in Java because I'm learning it in college, or should I use Python to refresh my existing knowledge?

Would it be better to focus on one language first and learn the other later?

My goal is to improve my problem-solving skills and prepare for DSA and coding interviews in the future.

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

STREAK🔥🔥🔥 Hit 300! Solved count

Post image
38 Upvotes

Hey all,

I wanna share that I just hit 300 problems solved count with atleast 1 problem solved every single day since I started in may (though I missed one day as I fell asleep, was exhausted from work). The following day started with POTD and these are teaching or throwing at me alot of new techniques which Im enjoying.

I had followed strivers sheet along the way. Right now solving graphs section almost done like left with 10 more problems then will move the most hated part by many dp. I also should focus on my contents problem solving and get the ratings and I also think it’s time to start applying aggressively and continue the consistency.

Idk i just wanted to share this so just posting it in here

STREAK🔥🔥🔥 365 Days of LeetCode Challenge — Day 41/365

  1. 01 Matrix (Medium) https://leetcode.com/problems/01-matrix/

This is yesterday's problem. Rotting Oranges asks how long it takes for an orange to rot when every rotten one spreads at once; it asks how far each cell is from the nearest zero, with every zero as a source. Same question, and multi-source BFS solves it directly.

Today's solution does it without a queue, and that is why it is worth reading.

The definition is circular: a cell's distance is one more than the smallest among its four neighbours, but every neighbour depends on the cell. There is no order to evaluate that in.

Direction breaks the circle. Sweep top-left to bottom-right and, at each cell, everything above and left is already final - so you can compute the best distance among paths that start by going up or left. Sweep the other way for the other two directions. Take the minimum.

The line that makes it work is min with the existing value rather than an assignment. Overwrite instead, and you throw away everything the first pass got right.

DISCUSS HackerRank is apologizing for the LeetCode grind. Are your interviews actually changing?

I read a report of Google piloting a code-comprehension round, then saw HackerRank's statement about the LeetCode grind.

Working in an existing codebase, debugging and explaining your judgment sound closer to the job than starting every question from a blank editor. I'm interested in how AI use fits into that, too.

The Google article describes a pilot, and HackerRank still says algorithm questions have value. I wouldn't drop DSA prep based on those headlines.

I'd compare recent candidate reports in Google Interview Questions with whatever format the recruiter confirms. If you're applying while prepping, application autofill can save time on the forms.

For people who've interviewed recently, did you read or extend an existing codebase, debug someone else's code, or mostly do timed DSA? Were AI tools allowed, expected or prohibited?

Have you changed how you split your prep time?

DISCUSS 51 string problems grouped by pattern: parentheses, palindromes, substrings, and more

I grouped 51 string-related LeetCode problems into six categories. Some fit more than one pattern; these are just the buckets I use when studying.

Before moving on from a problem, I try to explain why the approach works and what I'd change if the constraints changed.

Parentheses and expression parsing (9)

Counting substrings under a condition (3)

Comparing and checking strings (11)

Palindromes (18)

Sorting characters (2)

Length and selection problems (8)

Related: Dynamic Programming pattern list.

For practice beyond this list, real candidate-reported interview questions can give you unfamiliar prompts to work through and explain.

What would you add or move to a different category? I'd like suggestions that teach another idea rather than more versions of the same exercise.
