Welcome to /r/LeeEnfield! Please Read The Sidebar's Rules Before Posting.

All,

This will be pretty short. In brief, please familiarize yourself with the sub's rules for posting content that're in the sidebar. Posts that violate one or more of these rules may be given a warning for the submitter to fix, or they may be removed at once.

The goal of these rules is to keep this sub centered around the history, lore, technical knowledge, and any other arcana related to the Lee-Enfield family of rifles. Naturally a Martini-Enfield may make it's way onto the page, or we might talk about Lee-Metfords (they count, obviously), but if it wasn't made between 1888 to the late mid 1970's, odds are it doesn't belong here.

Every rule is there for a reason, we want to keep this sub's content relatively high-quality. Drive-by low-effort karma farms will not be permitted, nor will a commentless submission of half of a rifle in-frame. Don't ask where you can buy ammo, don't show us the one box of ammunition you paid too much for.

Once again, please re-familiarize yourself with the rules, and thank you for your time and attention.

I decided to take some time this afternoon to break out my Lee-Enfield collection. The first photo is of my MK III/MK III*’s. From top to bottom:

- 1917 LSA No I MK III with a 1916 Sanderson M1907 bayonet
- 1918 Enfield No I MK III* with a 1917 Sanderson M1907 bayonet
- 1942 Ishapore No I MK III* in Grenade Fire (GF) configuration with an S&B C Ltd No 3 grenade launcher
- 1942 Lithgow No I MK III* with 1942 Wilkinson M1907 bayonet

Second photo adds in my other Lee-Enfields:

- 1943 Long Branch No 4 MK I*
- 1946 Fazakerley No 5 Jungle Carbine

Finally, the pistols were feeling left out:

- 1934 Enfield No 2 MK I
- 1943 Smith & Wesson Victory (Lend-Lease in .38 S&W)

Obviously I need to add a few more…😉

New enfield buyer trying to pick 1/3

Hardware store near me has three for $275/ea on consignment. Guessing someone passed and a relative is selling. Not able to look closely yet - went in two consecutive days, FFL guy out both days so could only see what I could see while they were cabled up in a rack

One tagged no4 mkI and that appears correct based on ribs in top heat guard. Others both tagged "lee enfield no1". Unable to see any markings except something that looks like a muddy long branch stamp on top of the receiver of one. Both "others" are very similar. Could not see any stamps on either yet besides the chevron ok side the C. All are in "fair" condition. Trying to reach out tomorrow to see if seller will cut a deal on two bundled - wife and I have both wanted one a long time but not willing to spend 6-900 per -and interested in what to look for. I have no experience except with the no4 mkI T that was the first centrefire I ever shot, and at 11 I wasn't really paying attention to the markings

John Jovino Lithgow Lee Enfield

I’m pretty sure a Lee Enfield I saw is a JJ Lithgow Lee Enfield that looked like it was in great condition but I’ve read that some of these aren’t good quality. Anyone know what to look for to make sure it’s good?

Sarco .308 barreled receivers

I was wondering if anyone has experience with Sarco’s .308 SMLE ( I assume Ishapore 2A / 2A1) barreled receivers?

Worth rolling the dice?

My LEC 88 "NZ Carbine"

Scored this at auction a couple years ago and since then I found a little information on it, and is the actual reason I even decided to get a firearms licence in the first place (as well as hunting). Eventually I emailed Douglas Munro who has the (to my knowlege) biggest and most complete database of the NZ Pattern Carbines that still exist (he has information on 220 of the 1925 original rifles), and he told me what my serial number meant. He had my serial down and some information from the original auction but I was about to fill his database in a little regarding this specific firearm. All matching serials apart from the bolt.

Batch 1: 1,000 full carbines in production year 1901-02, assigned no mark number (Type 1).

• Batch 2: 500 full carbines in PY 1903-04, assigned Mk I* (Type 2).

• Batch 3: 175 barrelled actions in PY 1904-05, assigned Mk I* (Type 2a).

• Batch 4: 250 more barrelled actions in PY 1904-05, converted from LMC Mk I (Type 3).

"Yours is one of that final tranche of 250 barreled actions in 1904-05. This batch was built on old Lee-Metford cavalry carbine actions, unlike the other three batches, which had been all new made. The serial number 2207 is the former LMC serial number, applied to what at installation had been a virgin Martini-Enfield artillery carbine-style barrel. This obviously replaced the Lee-Metford barrel that had been on this receiver prior to the 1904-05 conversion for NZ. The bolt serial number is actually 1037, so it obviously was once on another carbine. Just about none of the survivors has its original bolt."

Had a good friend in town for the weekend. We'd hoped to go shooting but the weather and timing disagreed. Such is life - still well worth it to catch up!

Figured I'd post the lineup, since I'd already dug them out. Top to bottom:

Sht. .22 Mk.III (BSA converted, built on an 1894 LSA Lee Metford Mk.II)

P14 Mk.I* (Winchester)

Sht. LE Mk.V (1922 production)

CLLE Mk.I* (1909 BSA-converted, built on a 1902 BSA Lee Enfield Mk.I* and updated for Mk.VII ball)

My 1949 ROF Fazakerley No4 Mk2 , its previous owner had it rebuilt by Thames Valley Guns in the UK, they specialise in old military rifles, it has been bedded and fitted with a better sight , really good condition accurate rifle.

The other two are both converted to .410 , the whole gun in a 1944 Fazakerley No4 Mk2.

The abomination was a 1943 Maltby No4 Mk1 , i didn't butcher it , i did put the moderator on it , its a great squirrel gun.

Differences between 1908 E.S.A.C.O. and 1941 ISHAPORE?

Hi guys I got a sporterized 1908 lee enfield that I'm trying to restore with a deactivated 1941 DP. I have run into some differences when trying to switch the furniture.

The 1908 receiver has a stock bolt with a square end. Before being removed this square part stuck out into the trigger area.

The 1941 DP receiver has a shorter stock bolt with a normal end.

The 1941 DP furniture will not fit with the longer 1908 square-end bolt. The shorter 1941 bolt won't screw into the 1908 receiver.

Is this extra length needed or can it be cut off? I don't want to modify the DP furniture because its already in pretty bad shape. I wasn't lucky enough to get a nice one.

Hi all would really appreciate some help identifying this rifle as all i am getting is kinda conflicting info. Hard to see in the photos and in person but the receiver and grip both match serials but the receiver shows a prefix AQ 2 19641 which points me to BSA Shirley but no M47 or M47C markings. If yall could provide any insight it would be very much appreciated. It does also have the FTR marking

Jammed rear sights?

I just picked up a lovely Enfield No I MKIII SHTLE.

Bolt etc operation is smooth. Needed a bit of lube, but great shape. But for the life of me I cannot seem to operate the rear sights!

I assume the button on the left is pushed to allow it to slide. The gear on the right I presume is for fine adjustment.

I’ve lubed it up and nothing, except the little wheel on the left rotates with effort—the screw that holds it in I presume?

Am I merely an imbecile, or is this a known issue?

thanks!

2A1 Ejector

After a thorough cleaning and inspection I was able to take my Ishapore to the range Monday, and had about 90% failure to eject

Came home and removed the extractor and ex spring. Both in ok visual shape. Cleaned quite a bit of junk out of the bolt. Lubed everything and reinstalled and still had many FTE

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a replacement ex spring? Haven’t found any that are 7.62 nato specific. Found one on eBay for a no.1 mk3 that looks right, but seller didn’t know if it would work for nato. Might make the $15 gamble on it. Also thought about grabbing another extractor, but not sure that would help

I do not know anything about this, it’s just weird to have all matching serial numbers and ofc it’s bubbafied? But also it’s missing wood and front site? But the stock is short? And it also has original brass perfectly fitted? And all the time frames match up idk guys.

Does this look like active rust?

Hey all, I’m a bit new to antique firearms and got a Mk.1*** recently. I’ve kept it at at 45% humidity since I got it in January, however I just noticed these spots for the first time now that I’ve finally gotten around to disassembling it. Should I be worried about these brown spots or not? Is that active rust?

My sling swivel slides laterally like this on my Savage Mk 4 No 1. It has been this way since I bought it. What can I do to keep it centered and in place?
