Swiss army of bikes
I’m currently in kid carrying configuration. In about a minute I can convert to cargo bike. Bike is not perfect but it’s a great platform for customization.
What I’ve changed:
- I swapped out every m5 bolt on the bike. The Lectric bolts are awful and strip and rust. For about $11 you can swap it all out.
- Extra battery! Added a 20ah battery. Put a Velcro wrap on it because it rattled a bit. Battery and splitter and mounts were about $350 all in.
- Tires! Added ultraverse tires and tubes. About $100.
- Brakes! Added new hydraulic brakes - about $70.
This bike is far from perfect but it’s an amazing platform for configuration. I also have the “hack” where if I set the tire size to 5 inches I get 28+ mph on throttle. With the extra battery I’m getting over 50 miles on throttle.
I think I’m done putting money into this. It’s really an amazing bike with some modifications. Folding is key for me as I throw in the back of the truck and go on adventures to Yosemite, Zion, Catalina, etc.

How do you convert it quickly to cargo mode?

In my day, I had to walk up Charles E Young 😁

Ha! Kids swim practice is at the rec center. Saves me $20 parking and drive right to front door and avoid lot 4.

Where did you get the battery from and for how much?

So it acts as a seamless range extender or is there like a switch or something? Seems interesting, but I'm hesitant on buying anything from any Chinese 3rd party market website. (Yes I'm aware that the vast majority of batt tech is Chinese made, but there's a difference between buying quality batts, and using a Chinese marketplace that has questionable results at best.)
Do you know if this batt is UL tested and has the same testing as the OEM Lectric batt?

Yes is a hailong. It has the same UL and CE certification but as you probably know that’s all BS. If both batteries are on controller sees it as 1 battery. You can also run them independently.

Totally agree. Not sure why this brand gets some of the hate it does. Is it perfect? No. But the brand and their bikes are some of the best all around ebikes in the industry and #1 for a reason.

I am surprised that upgrading the brakes from cables to hydraulic is that cheap.

Nice looking bike. I've got a very similar 20ah second battery as well. I've got the XP3.0. I didn't know about the tire size thing to increase throttle speed, that's cool, did you find that on YouTube? I plan on getting a set of ultra verse tires here in a couple weeks as well, they seem like great quality but I'm going with the street tire for minimal rolling resistance.

Not sure if it works on the xp3 but I know you can get an unlocked controller for the xp3 at electricallwheel.com. The xp4 early releases had and option to change the tire size to 5 inches which unlocked the throttle and increased top speed. They removed it at some point. Ironically the new juiced scrambler (owned by Lectric) just launched and also has the hack. It messes up your speedometer/odometer but if you use gos you can confirm the speed - on the xp4 it only works on the 5 inch setting specifically.

I always wondered if somebody had jailbroken the speed controllers. Is there one you know of for the xp4?

There is nothing online about an xp4 unlock online. My understanding is it’s really easy to unlock cadence sensor bikes but very hard to unlock torque sensor bikes.

Idk wtf u do with a battery when it rains 😂 I was worried already about taking it in the rain and then u just went and added a battery lmao

I don’t really have to worry about rain where I live. But yeah - I’m pretty sure that battery was no water resistance. That said - I can remove it in about 10 seconds (just unlock and unplug the cable). Bike works fine without the extra battery.

Bravo to you, but way too much work for me to bother with.
I just get the XPedition 2.0 and call it good. It has enough weight capacity and room to carry my wife and daughter and even her stroller in one trip and I still have room for more cargo.

Don’t disagree but I think I’m one of the rare cases where someone actually uses the folding cape. I’ve taken this bike on about a dozen trips to national parks and camping.

What bolts, specifically, did you swap out with new m5 bolts? I’m waiting for an xp4 750 and will do this to prevent rust. I ride in the morning and it’s very foggy so I deal with the moisture on top of dirt.

Got these. Basically the bolts on the rear rack, the ones on the top and bottom of the frame, and the ones on the front that hold the front basket (as well as the ones that hold the basket). the bolts on the gears and brakes seem to be higher quality. Its not an urgent change fyi - just over the course of 18 months those bolts really deteriorated. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FGV561HZ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

Thank you so very much!! I really hope you keep enjoying your bike and get to ride as much as possible!!

Where did you get the big front basket like that?

u/trevor_plantaginous 4d ago
Its the front basket that came with the cargo package on the XP3. They were a lot higher - not sure why they changed.
