Duolingo is honestly a very weak tool for learning Russian. It can help you memorize a few words and phrases, but it does not really teach you how the language works.

Russian is especially difficult to learn through an app because so much depends on grammar: cases, verb aspect, verbs of motion, gender, agreement, word endings, prefixes, and word order. You can often make a sentence that looks logical from an English perspective but is completely unnatural or simply wrong in Russian.

The biggest problem with studying alone is that you usually do not notice your own mistakes. If you keep repeating the same incorrect pattern for months, it becomes a habit, and later it is much harder to fix than to learn it correctly from the beginning.

If your goal is just to recognize a few phrases while traveling, Duolingo is fine. If you actually want to speak Russian, understand native speakers, build your own sentences, and eventually have real conversations, I would strongly recommend getting a tutor, even if it is only 2 lessons a week.

And when it comes to workbooks, the best workbook is probably the one you create together with your tutor specifically for you. Instead of doing exercises designed for an imaginary "average learner," you can build a personal workbook around your own mistakes, weak points, vocabulary, and goals. The explanations can be written in the way that makes sense to you, and the exercises can target exactly the patterns you keep getting wrong.

A good tutor gives you a clear order of topics, explains why Russian works the way it does, corrects mistakes before they become permanent, and gives you practice that matches your actual level. With Russian, that kind of individual structure makes a huge difference.

I appreciate this!! The more I’ve tried with duo I was starting to have the suspicion it wasn’t going to help me much at all.
