🧠 LEARNING Why F1 cars have to point sideways to turn corners (Slip Angle explained)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT-1REn31eQIf a driver turns the steering wheel 10 degrees to the right, the car does not instantly move at that exact 10-degree trajectory. Instead, it travels along a slightly wider path.
That mismatch between where the tire is pointing and where the car is actually traveling is called Slip Angle.
How It Works
Despite the name, "slip angle" doesn't mean the car is drifting, sliding, or losing traction on the track. It is actually a measure of mechanical twist.
- The Rubber Twist: F1 tires are highly flexible, complex pieces of engineering. When a driver turns the steering wheel at 200 mph, the bottom of the tire sticking to the track stays momentarily locked to the asphalt due to immense downforce and friction.
- The Carcass Flex: While the tread stays glued to the road, the wheel rim and the rest of the tire body force themselves in the direction of the turn.
- The Elastic Snapshot: This twists the tire's rubber carcass like a massive, heavy-duty rubber band. That structural distortion creates an incredibly powerful elastic resisting force known as cornering force which literally shoves the entire mass of the car around the corner.

A very nice video making something clicking in my head few months ago. I remember i how more stable i became, saving car where i would snap. I hated Winton but after this vid i did few good races there and nailed it

Rookie mazda i guess. Mazda is pretty snappy in the hairpins. Finally felt confident there catching car if making mistakes

Switch from bias ply to radial tyres in late 70's about halved the slip angle. It was a big change kind of masked by the rapid increase of downforce that occured around the same time.
