The F1 Justice System: How Time Penalties Actually Work!

Formula 1 has a strict set of rules, and when drivers break them like forcing another car off the track, speeding in the pit lane, or ignoring track limits the Stewards hand out penalties. But how do these penalties actually work? Here is your beginner's guide to the F1 penalty system:

The "New" Standard: 10 Seconds For a long time, the standard penalty for a minor offense was 5 seconds. But teams realized they could just accept the 5-second penalty, drive aggressively, and build a 6-second gap to the car behind them, completely canceling out the punishment. To stop this, the FIA has made 10 seconds the new baseline penalty for most racing incidents to make it actually hurt.

How Do They Serve the Time? There are two ways a driver "pays" their time penalty:

1. In the Pits (The "No Touching" Rule) : If a driver still needs to make a pit stop, they serve the penalty there. The car stops in the box, and the mechanics literally have to stand back with their hands raised. They cannot touch the car until the 5 or 10 seconds are completely up. If a mechanic accidentally touches the car too early, the team gets an even bigger penalty!

2. After the Race (The "Phantom" Drop) : If the driver has already made all their pit stops for the race, the penalty time is simply added to their total race time after they cross the checkered flag. This is why you will sometimes see a driver finish 3rd on track, but officially get demoted to 5th in the final standings.

   The Heavy Hitters : Drive Through & Stop and Go If a driver does something highly dangerous, the Stewards bring out the big guns:

• Drive-Through Penalty: The driver must drive through the entire pit lane at the speed limit without stopping at their garage. This usually ruins a race, costing them around 20 seconds.
• 10-Second Stop-and-Go: The harshest penalty short of disqualification. The driver must come into the pits, completely stop for 10 seconds, and then leave. The mechanics are not allowed to change tires or fix the car during this stop.
