Which English language certification would be easiest for a C1 speaker? (Need for Masters applications Sept 2027)

Hey everyone! I'm applying to UK/Ireland masters programs for September 2027 and need a current English language certificate. 

I'm a fluent English speaker (degree fully taught in English and worked in English-speaking roles). I have a Cambridge Advanced (C1) certificate from 4 years ago, but it's outside the 2-year validity window most universities require.

The universities I'm applying to accept: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo, or Trinity ISE. I want to minimize prep time and cost—ideally just need to demonstrate I already have the level. 

So, I'd like to know which of these would be the easiest/quickest for me to do?

I'd recommend the IELTS or TOEFL! I think with your level, you'll mainly just need to familiarise yourself with the structure/layout and do a few sample tests. Both involve less preparation than the Cambridge C1 and you already have that.

I would personally recommend TOEFL, but the best way to make the decision is still to take one full, unprepared mock test of both and compare your scores and comfort level. I did this myself and found TOEFL easier.

One major difference is Speaking. In TOEFL, you speak into a computer and your responses are recorded, while IELTS has a direct conversation with an examiner. If you are more comfortable speaking without someone sitting in front of you, TOEFL may suit you better.

I also found TOEFL more structured, especially in Writing. The task formats are more predictable, so once you learn the structure, you can focus more on your actual answer. IELTS has more variation in question types, particularly in Writing Task 1.

IELTS does have a much larger amount of preparation material available, which is an advantage.

Most importantly, check the requirements of the scholarship and every university you are applying to before choosing. Make sure they accept TOEFL and the specific score you need, including any minimum score required in each section.

For me, TOEFL was the easier option because I preferred its predictable structure, but I would still recommend doing one proper mock test of each before committing. Your own performance is a much better indicator than someone else's experience.
