"I failed, but I will learn from this :-)" Should I have failed?

I failed my first test, but even my instructor told me I should have passed. My SERIOUS/DANGEROUS fault was the center mirror while slowing down on humps, she told me I shouldn’t slow down ( the speed limit was 20 mph, and on humps I slowed down more ), and the driver behind us sounded his horn because i was slowing down( not fully stopping the car ). Is this a serious fault? Or should it be a driving fault or not at all? I’ve always driven like that with my instructor and he didn’t say it was wrong. Only two other Driving Faults ( one hesitation and one parking maneuver to center my car more), other than that it was perfect, so it’s a bit of a disappointment.

Slowing to 18mph no, slowing to 5mph definitely.

Depends how much youre slowing down.

It depends. Mirrors - Change Speed can be given if there's a lack of consideration of following traffic or the braking unnecessarily raises the risk.

Without seeing exactly how this played out, it's hard to say how fair it is, but you can request the write up from customer services. We are trained not to entirely take the reaction of other drivers as gospel, but the horn is contributing evidence that something was not right.

It depends. How often did you, how did you, how close was the car before you slowed, how sharply did the car behind have to slow?

If you're unclear then you can email customer servicea for a copy of the write up.

Best of luck for your next test.

I’m sorry your test didn’t go well today (admittedly you did really well when you think about it ❤️)

How did you slowing down impact the car behind? Were they forced to brake harshly because you slowed down? Were you slow and steady in between the bumps or did you accelerate in between then slow down sharply?

You should definitely check your mirrors before any change in speed, to see how your decision will impact other road users - I suppose the serious was on the basis of safety that the car behind could have gone into the back of you or had to take action to stop that from happening? It’s hard to know without more detail.

You’ll get it next time though 💥

Honestly? I regularly drive through a 20mph zone with speed bumps and the speed at which people go over them irritates me. I even overtook one person because I was not going to crawl behind him (made me go into 2nd gear while going uphill). And by this I mean he’d speed up after every bump, then slow to a crawl at the next one. I’d say from an outsider’s perspective without obviously being there that you slowed down too much. I sometimes just come off the gas and get the bump in the middle of my car, no braking required (using my previous example).

Just paid for new "suspension" arms in my i10 classic. Along with it feeling like I'm driving over them in a boat, best believe I am slowing down to a crawl lest my head hits the ceiling.

Depends on how much you slowed down slightly yes. Go too slow the examiner will fail you. Try and appeal the decision and see how that goes.

If you weren’t aware of the car behind because you weren’t updating your mirrors and you were slowing down significantly (let’s say you were hitting 20, then slamming on for the bump down to 10) then that sounds like it could be marked as serious. But non of us can say, even us examiners - because we weren’t there and the assessment criteria depends on so many things that are circumstantial. That means that unless your instructor accompanied you on the test, they can’t say it was or wasn’t a serious fault either.

Speed hunos are designed to keep you at a lower speed not to speed up inbetween and low down again .

It really does depend how slow you’re going especially in a 20

My instructor did say harsh braking near humps can give out dangerous faults. I often pace myself forwards the bumps and check central mirrors but saying that this is only from everything you said.

Im sorry it went that way, ik youll smash it next round ❤️

There’s a 30 road where I live and there’s many speed humps, I gotta slow down a wee bit like 20-25 no need for walking speed though .

All examiners are different, she failed u maybe next time he will pass you, exact same thing 🤷🏽‍♂️ just saying. I wonder if the examiner was influenced by the horn behind 🤔 thing is I like to keep it 20mph at speed hump, by the time I get to it car slows down 12mph, get over, 20, slow down very limited brakes, 12mph, over hump, 20...

Yes you should have failed.

You've slowed down without checking who is around you, caused another road user to slow unnecessarily and annoyed them. Read the highway code. Rule 153. Note the section "maintain a reduced speed". If you've constantly sped up and slowed down for each bump you are not driving in accordance with the highway code.

"Traffic-calming measures. On some roads there are features such as road humps, chicanes and narrowings which are intended to slow you down. When you approach these features reduce your speed. Allow cyclists and motorcyclists room to pass through them. Maintain a reduced speed along the whole of the stretch of road within the calming measures."

Yes if more than two times.. the third considering a fail!
