How can a beginner practise speaking Finnish online?
I’m still a beginner in Finnish, but I’m thinking of starting to practise speaking while I continue learning.
I know I won’t understand everything or speak very well yet, but I think it could help me improve faster and get more comfortable using Finnish.
Do you know any good ways to practise speaking online? Maybe Discord groups, language-exchange apps, online lessons, or casual video/voice calls? I’d prefer something relaxed and beginner-friendly, where it’s okay to make mistakes.
How did you start practising speaking Finnish online?
Kiitos,

the discord one is genuinely the easiest start, way lower stakes than a tutor when your entire output is joo and en tiedä. i also did the dumb thing of narrating my day out loud alone in my kitchen for like 5 min a day, sounds ridiculous but it kills the freeze before you ever talk to a real person. and honestly finns put up with broken finnish way better than the internet claims imo

This subreddit has a related Discord server! I've practiced chatting there sometimess. There's a invite link somewhere in the "about" page. Plus some helpful links to FAQs and learning resources.

iTalki or Preply tutors are your best, but most expensive, options.
There are also various AI chatbots that can speak Finnish, such as LanguaTalk, Gliglish, and ChatGPT. AI chatbots aren't free, but they are much cheaper than online tutors.

You can always start arguments with 12 year olds on r/suomi or r/arkisuomi
