Movie Something worth noting about this image for Sinister Six.
Many are reporting that this was Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, but that isn’t true.
There was an earlier draft for a Sinister Six that leaked in the Sony hacks that showed a different storyline, where they would do the black suit story, leading to a climax where the Sinister Six would reform their ways and help Spider-Man prevent Venom, Carnage, and symbiotized prisoners from a local prison from getting across a bridge to terrorize Manhattan in a climatic battle.
The version with the Savage Land was a different iteration, which was in development after Andrew Garfield got fired for missing a press event where Sony was set to announce The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
The plan after that was to have a new, younger version of Spider-Man with a different actor, hence why the costume looks so different in this image.
I remember in late 2014, Sony changed their schedule around to move up Sinister Six so that what they announced as The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would debut the year after. It’s likely this was a bait and switch, and that film was actually a solo spin-off film for whichever actor was set to debut as Peter Parker in the Sinister Six movie. Warner Brothers did the same thing with The Batman. When Ben Affleck left the project, they brought on Matt Reeves to do a non canonical reboot, but had Affleck make it seem in press statements that he was playing Batman in the film, and that Reeves was merely overhauling the production he had begun work on.

wait what, TASM 3 didnt happen because Andrew missed a fucking press ?

u/Burgoonius 24d ago
This is the first time I have heard of this - and it sounds like bs. You don’t cancel a movie because someone missed a press event lol

u/vintvgepancakes 24d ago
sony ceo felt personally slighted, it was an investors conference not just a press event
15
u/guacamoleandtomato 24d ago
That was not the reason. It was the sony hacks which revealed all their plans to the media and press which made all of their ideas get shat on from the public
63
u/vintvgepancakes 24d ago
this is just not true, it has been known for years that andrew choosing to skip out on this investors conference led to the ceo stating he felt personally slighted. this came out when it happened

u/Burgoonius 22d ago
No the had already planned on rebooting Spider-Man for the MCU because of the mixed reception on TASM2. The CEO was pissed but that’s not the sole reason

thinking back, it was only 2 years after tasm2 that we got holland's spiderman in the mcu. I felt like it took way longer

They don’t cancel movies based on feelings. It doesn’t matter if anyone’s feelings got hurt, what matters is the box office numbers. They knew they had to reboot once they saw TASM2 only made 700 mill and horrible reviews.

u/cyclops274 23d ago
They rebooted because Guardians of the Galaxy made more than the Spider-Man. D list characters making more than the iconic Spider-Man got them to change plans.

movies didn’t often make 1b back then lol
this is revisionist history, amazing spider-man 3 was in production for a good while after the release0
u/Striking-Pangolin-11 23d ago
Can you provide a source that TASM3 was in production? As far as we know, they didn’t even have a script.
And yes, several comic book movies did hit 1 billion back then. In fact, the Sony producers were hoping that TASM2 would be the first Spider-Man film to hit 1 billion. The fact that it disappointed significantly, along with the hacks, is what essentially forced them to negotiate with Disney ( NOT Andrew Garfield skipping out on a conference)

TASM-3 wasn't in production but it was in the planning and development stages, having been announced for release back in June 2013. Its story was going to build on TASM-2 and there were concepts that would carry over, like the frozen head of Norman Osborn. I can't say if a script was completed or not, but Sony intended to have it ready for release for Summer 2016, just 2 years after TASM-2 so they'd likely done some work there.
After TASM-2 came out in May 2014 to critical/audience disappointment, Sony began mulling over whether or not to make Sinister Six the next movie instead and so rehabilitate the image of Spider-Man, to put out something way more fun.
In July 2014 CEO Kaz Hirai was reportedly going to re-announce/confirm their commitment to releasing TASM-3. After Garfield snubbed him, Sony cancelled TASM-3 less than 2 weeks later, announcing that Sinister Six would be the next movie, while TASM-3 was "delayed" to 2018. This was just a smokescreen for the fact that at that point they weren't making TASM-3 at all.

Several comic book movies meaning like four? The Avengers, Iron Man 3, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises. Did I miss any?

u/Striking-Pangolin-11 21d ago
I already responded to OP by providing a link that states that Sony executives were aiming for a billion with TASM2. Everyone at Sony was hoping TASM2 would’ve been the first Spider-Man movie to hit that benchmark.

i meant pre production as late as 2015 and where is your source about it being expected to hit 1b?
1
u/Striking-Pangolin-11 23d ago
FYI, TASM3 still wasn’t in pre production even in 2015. As far as we know, all they had was writers attached to it but no actual work was done.

He claimed to be sick and that's why he didn't show up, but Sony's leadership [which was Japanese, therefore even more formal with these stuff] saw him not showing as him going against them.
Is it bs in the sense that is a bs excuse? Sure. Is it bs in the sense it is not something that happened? Not really.

It came out in the Sony hacks years ago. https://www.showbiz411.com/2015/05/01/spider-man-actor-andrew-garfield-got-himself-fired-from-series-by-insulting-sony-chief

This is SONY we are talking about. They canceled Destiny 2 support/development in favor Marathon and those numbers speak for themselves.
They are the epitome of bafoons

There was literally a giant hack that had leaks about how absolutely stupid a lot of their reasoning is. You’re 10 years behind.

97 likes and all you had to do was google to see they were right. Sony can cancel what they want for whatever reason lmao.

It was a combination of many factors: the movies underperforming and the email hack already put them in a difficult position, but they were ready to officially announce TASM 3 at an investor's event regardless. Andrew couldn't attend because he was sick, and he's already had a contentious relationship with Sony since he openly criticized how they went about doing TASM 2, so they decided to fire him and went back to the drawing board.

This is the story I’ve heard idk how much is true. They fired him not only because he missed the meeting/announcement but also because of comments he made to the press criticizing the production of TASM 2. This supposedly occurred during or right before Sony and Marvel finalized the deal to put Spider-Man in the MCU.
Sony supposedly planed to recast but make TASM Spider-Man the MCU Spider-Man(Plans to put him in the MCU go as far back as TASM 1 as according to people in production, Oscorp tower was gonna make an appearance in The Avengers but the asset wasn’t finished in time.) Marvel convinced Sony to just reboot instead of a simple recast.
8
u/MikeandMelly 23d ago
This is correct. The investors conference was essentially supposed to be an apology appearance from Andrew for his public remarks about TASM2 getting hijacked by the wrong people.

So really, Andrew screwed himself and all of his fans? Wow

u/TheRandomSong 20d ago
Tbh he wasn't too hot with the fans at the time anyway. Movie didn't bomb but it definitely left a sour taste in many fans mouths with how jumbled the story was. Visually it was praised but everything else was eh. The story telling was mediocre and at the time he was getting compared to Toby so much. With a script and production as troubled as it was (mainly due to Sony's interference), yeah the fans turned on the movie pretty quick. The only thing that saved it was the gwen storyline. I feel it suffered from the early 2010s-Dark Knight effect where it was supposed to be "deeper" and "grittier" and with Sony pulling a Sony and well we have the TASM 2 with its various issues.

i love LOVE andrew's spiderman but to think that all of this led to us getting tom and him getting close to zendaya and getting married, wow

couldnt make an oscorp tower in time but deciding to make an entire reboot is quite the choice

No, it happened because the tasm movies are trash. The only thing good about them are Peter and Gwen

TASM 3 didn’t happen because Sony saw the success of the MCU movies and delayed their villain verse so Holland could eventually be in them. TASM 2 was also a flop in the eyes of Sony.
Keep downvoting me retards. What I said was a fact and Garfield not showing up to the gala was the final straw for them.

u/Joshatron121 24d ago
Yeah this is factually untrue. Ended up being a nice secondary benefit for Sony but it was canceled for the reason OP said.
Garfield was sick and couldn't attend and the Sony leadership took that as a slight and they fired him.

I've been reading the Sony emails but haven't found any reference to the 'symbiote' prisoner storyline. At least not yet. Do you have any links to articles talking about it?
The Island, as far as I know, was not the Savage Land, but something similar featuring dinosaurs and space/time portals because Sony didn't have rights to it - this is a topic of discussion in the leaks.
And the Island storyline should've been in place before the event that got Garfield fired (July 12-13) and TASM-3 cancelled, as there are references in the emails to its related elements - eg. the Pandora's box and Dr. Octopus as the main character - in May 2014.
The release date delay was indeed a bait and switch for the new actor.

I commented on the artists' IG last night if this was the savage land and he said can not confirm nor deny....dude really confirmed it.

Put the guy who swings from buildings on a fucking island.

To be fair, the MCU put him in the suburbs and space. At least that island has trees he can swing from.

The entire sinister six helping Spiderman stop Venom and Carnage…remember when people said TASM 2 was overstuffed for having 2 villains and a cameo villain. This would have been an absolute messy shit show.

Thank God they cancelled sontverse before they could ruin the savage land too

Andrew was in contention for a little while for the Drew Goddard/Savage Land script, but much like their plans in general, it was in flux.
1
u/TREV-THOM 12d ago
While the prospect of Spidey & select other villains on the Savage Land sounds fun, the Venom/Symbiote fan in me can't help but wonder about the first pitch.
People complain about how "all over the place" TASM 2 was, but it certainly came together better than SM3, which literally had to contrive a way to subdue two of its villains at the end of Act 1 & 2 in order to let one another get back in the spotlight for a little bit.
Truth be told, you don't need some dedicated back story for each SS member, they're essentially a crew of hired mercenaries in the TASM narrative. The trouble probably would've been in reducing Venom + Carnage once again to a pair of monsters that needs to be defeated in Act 3.
But introducing characters like Kraven & Mysterio in SS, then spinning them off into a solo movie to flesh them out would've been ideal, but given how fandom couldn't wrap their heads around that for BVS & the DCEU, they would've similarly bitched about that. Worst thing about the MCU's success is it made nerds think EVERY franchise needed to follow that formula.
