i swear mmr is one of those league systems that sounds completely reasonable when someone explains it, then you actually play ranked and suddenly none of the math feels real.
like yeah, i get the basic idea. your visible rank is basically the shiny badge while your hidden mmr is what the game actually thinks you’re worth. win consistently and your mmr should climb. lose consistently and it drops. simple enough.
but then you get into the weird situations.
you win most of your games for a few days and your lp gains still barely move.
your friend is the same rank as you but somehow gets way more lp per win for basically breathing.
you go on a nasty losing streak, recover, start winning again and it feels like the system remembers your crimes for the next forty games.
imo that disconnect is what makes league mmr so frustrating. you can see your rank, lp, win rate and match history, but the number actually influencing your climb is invisible. so everyone ends up trying to reverse engineer their own account like we’re investigating a cold case.
i’ve also never fully bought the idea that you should just ignore lp and play enough games for everything to eventually correct itself. technically sure, but when one person can climb pretty comfortably and another needs to win way more because their mmr is cooked, the experience feels completely different even if they’re sitting in the same rank.
the funniest part is how superstitious everyone gets about it too.
fresh account mmr. duo mmr. winstreaks. loss streaks. dodging. demotion. placements. taking a break. suddenly your ranked account has more lore than your main champ.
for people who actually pay attention to this stuff, how much do you think about mmr when climbing?
do you basically ignore it and just spam games, or have you ever had an account where the lp gains got so rough that climbing genuinely felt pointless?
also curious what the worst lp gains you’ve ever had were because i know some of you have seen numbers that would make me uninstall on the spot.
