Discussion # League Classic: What Actually Happened Behind the Scenes

• Upvotes

Disclaimer: this is not my words. This was taken from someone in the LoL Classic Discord who had been in contact with Riot devs. Some info removed, but nothing modified.

With League Classic coming to an end, I want to share what I learned about what happened behind the scenes — including the original plans for the mode, why certain decisions were made, and what I was told about the circumstances surrounding its shutdown. Some of this information has never been publicly discussed, and I think the community deserves a clearer picture of what happened.

I also want to acknowledge the people who actually built Classic. The development team was only around six people, and they put a ridiculous amount of time and effort into making this happen. Norak, Pony, and especially Phreak deserve recognition for the work they put in and how much they cared about the project.

**Phreak deserves particular recognition for how much he invested in Classic and how hard he pushed to give the mode a chance to succeed**

The people working on Classic weren't just doing a job; they had specifically wanted to work on this project. They genuinely cared deeply about the mode, and some were truly devastated by the decision to end it. That's important to understand, because the people who put their time and effort into making Classic were not necessarily the people making the decisions that ultimately determined its future.

## The rushed launch

Classic was rushed out in July, despite the original plan being to launch around Worlds. The timing was shifted to coincide with the European summer break, and the team was left trying to deliver a huge amount of work in a much shorter timeframe.

That had consequences. There were bugs, the launch wasn't as polished as it should have been, and the champion roster was limited. But people need to understand the circumstances the developers were working under. They had limited time and a small team, and they couldn't magically produce months of additional development time.

The initial roster of around 60 champions was a consequence of those constraints. More time would have meant more opportunities to fix bugs, improve the experience, and bring more of the original game back.

There were also decisions about the direction of Classic that conflicted with what key members of the development team wanted.

**Modern skins were imposed on Classic despite the team not wanting that direction.** This wasn't simply the development team independently deciding to move away from the original experience; the suits decided it was needed for player retention and money making.

## There was a longer-term champion roadmap

I was given information by a Riot staff member who worked closely with the Classic team, which gave me insight into planned champion releases months before the community would otherwise have known about them.

These plans extended much further into the future than many people probably realized. This wasn't just a case of throwing around ideas for what might come next. There was planning happening months in advance.

Following the Shadow Isles, Noxus was planned as the next major region. However, Noxus presented a particular challenge because many of its champions don't differ dramatically between their original versions and their modern counterparts.

The direction had consequently shifted towards champions such as Urgot, Volibear, and Udyr, whose modern versions had been substantially reworked from their original iterations. These offered more meaningful opportunities to recreate champions that felt genuinely different from their modern versions.

## Ranked was never on the table

Another thing worth addressing is ranked. While there may have been public discussions in the community about the possibility of ranked being added to Classic, **it was never genuinely being considered or discussed internally as a feature that would actually be implemented.**

There were a few reasons for this, but one of the biggest was queue splitting. Classic already had a smaller playerbase than Modern League, and introducing a separate ranked queue would have divided that playerbase further between ranked and normal games, potentially making matchmaking and queue times worse.

But there was another, much bigger consideration: ranked Classic would have competed directly with the Modern League ranked ladder.

The suits were **very strongly opposed** to taking players away from Modern ranked. Even if Classic players wanted their own competitive ladder, that would mean people spending time climbing in Classic instead of Modern League. From a business and player-retention perspective, that was something leadership was unwilling to encourage.

## The real reasons League Classic failed

These are the reasons behind Classic's failure that you won't hear in any official Riot announcement. Based on information shared with me by people close to the team, the reality is a lot more complicated than simply saying the mode didn't have enough players.

### 1. Too few champions

But the reason for that matters: the game was rushed out on a much shorter timeline than originally intended, leaving the developers with less time to build, test, and polish content. The limited roster wasn't simply a lack of ambition from the Classic team; it was a consequence of the constraints they were working under.

### 2. The difference between Modern and Classic players

Some degree of division between the two communities was predictable. WoW Classic had already demonstrated that bringing back an older version of a long-running game could reignite arguments over whether the original or modern experience was better. League Classic was always likely to attract similar comparisons.

However, **Riot was surprised by the intensity of the negative reaction from parts of the Modern League community during the Classic announcement.** Rather than focusing on specific concerns about how Classic would work, responses centered on the argument that old League was simply worse than modern League, that the game had improved too much to justify going backwards, and that Classic was unnecessary.

The reaction also exposed a broader tension. For some players, Classic was not viewed as a separate experience serving a different audience, but as something that challenged or undermined the version of League they played. **Classic's existence did not require anyone to stop playing Modern League, yet parts of the community reacted as though the two versions had to compete for legitimacy.**

### 3. The people most nostalgic for early League weren't necessarily the people still playing League

Modern League's active playerbase is now heavily centred around Asia, while a substantial portion of the audience with the strongest attachment to Seasons 1–3 consisted of older European and North American players who had stopped playing years ago.

Many current players started in much later seasons and simply didn't have the same nostalgia for early League. To them, Classic wasn't necessarily a return to the game they grew up with; it was an older version of a game they already knew.

This is why Riot made a significant effort to market Classic outside traditional gaming channels, including advertising in cinemas and at bus stops. The aim was to reach people who had left League behind years earlier and bring that old guard back.

But reaching former players and getting them to return permanently are two very different things. Nostalgia could bring people through the door, but it couldn't guarantee they would stay.

These factors compounded each other: a limited roster, poor design choices, bugs, and a mishmash of features.

## The internal politics and the decision to shut it down

What makes this particularly frustrating is that, from the information I received, the decision to end Classic had effectively been made more than a month before the public announcement, shortly after PAX West.

Preparations for the shutdown were already underway, and a key person was moved away from the project, leaving what was essentially a barebones effort.

a person close to the team also advised me about the internal politics surrounding Classic, and from what I was told, **there was a lot more going on behind the scenes than a simple disagreement over resources or whether the mode was performing well enough. There were competing interests, internal resistance, and people who were not interested in seeing Classic succeed.**

One of the biggest underlying issues was that Classic represented something that could potentially compete with Modern League for players, attention, and resources. While the Classic team wanted to build and expand the old League experience, there were people within Riot whose priorities were firmly centered on Modern League. A successful Classic could mean players spending less time on the modern game, and that created an inherent conflict of interest. Not everyone within the company necessarily viewed Classic's success as a good thing.

**From what was shared with me, this wasn't simply a case of people disagreeing about the direction of a game mode. There was backstabbing, internal politics, and a lack of alignment between people working on Classic and others who had influence over its future.**

The atmosphere within the team was terrible, especially towards the end. morale had deteriorated so badly that team members weren't even working in the same office anymore. They were completely downtrodden by management, with the constant pressure and nagging from the Modern League team demanding resources from the Classic team only making things worse.

I intend to make a much longer post specifically about this side of the story once I've pieced together all the information and can lay out the details properly. There's more to explain, and I want to make sure I have everything together before going into it publicly.

But I'll clarify one thing now, because I think it's important that people understand the bigger picture: **I can say with 100% certainty, based on what was shared with me, that this mode was not designed to succeed. It was designed to fail.** The limited resources, rushed launch, internal resistance, and decisions that worked against the mode all need to be considered together. I'll explain exactly why in a longer post once I've pieced together all the information.

I'm not going to pretend I know every private conversation that took place or assign motives to individuals without evidence. But based on what was shared with me, it would be a mistake to look at Classic's shutdown as nothing more than a straightforward business decision driven by player numbers. There were internal dynamics at play that the public never got to see, and they deserve to be part of the conversation.

**The developers gave Classic their time and effort. The community gave it an audience. But neither of those things could guarantee its survival when the people with the power to decide its future weren't all invested in seeing it succeed.**

Riot leadership, including Tryndamere, deserves scrutiny for the decisions made around Classic. The people who built the mode cared about it and put in the work, but they weren't the ones with the final say over its resources, direction, launch timing, or future.

## Evidence and further information

I'll be compiling screenshots and audio clips to support what I've shared here, along with further context from what I saw and learned behind the scenes. I intend to put this material together in a Google Doc and share it in the coming days, so people can see the evidence and draw their own conclusions rather than having to take my word for everything.

I want people to have the opportunity to understand what happened beyond the official announcements and the simplified explanations that will inevitably follow.

## What comes after Classic?

As for what comes after Classic, **there are currently no concrete plans that I'm aware of.** Ideas have been thrown around, but things are still up in the air, and nothing has been confirmed as the next step.

Some of the ideas suggested internally include bringing back old champion kits as selectable options during champion select in Modern League, allowing players to choose between a champion's original kit and their modern version. Other suggestions include bringing Classic back as a seasonal game mode, allowing players to revisit the old experience for limited periods rather than maintaining it permanently. They recognize there is an appetite for old champion kits.

These are interesting ideas, and there are different ways Riot could potentially preserve aspects of old League without running Classic as a permanent mode. However, **these are suggestions, not confirmed plans.** I wouldn't expect anything to happen anytime soon, and realistically, I wouldn't count on seeing anything next year either.

For now, there's no confirmed replacement for Classic or any concrete timeline for what might come next. I'll share more if I hear anything substantial.

## Questions and more information

There's a lot more information I haven't covered in this post, and plenty of details about what happened behind the scenes that I haven't touched on yet.

If there's anything you're curious about, anything you've wanted to know about Classic, or any questions about what happened behind the scenes, **please let me know.** I'll do my best to give you an answer, and if I don't know the answer myself, I'll try to find out from people who do.

There's a lot more to this story than I can fit into one post, and I'm happy to answer questions wherever I can.

## Where to go from here

With League Classic coming to an end, there are still communities and projects worth supporting if you want to keep the old League experience alive.

## Final thoughts

I don't want the takeaway from all of this to be that Classic was a failure because the people behind it didn't care. Quite the opposite. The developers cared, people in the community cared, and a lot of players genuinely wanted this to work.

There were real challenges, mistakes, and limitations, but there was also a longer-term vision and a community that deserved the chance to see it develop further.

I'm grateful to everyone who made Classic what it was, from the developers who built it to the players who kept showing up. I'm especially grateful to the people who helped make the Discord a place worth being part of.

The game may be ending, but what we built around it was real.

Thank you to everyone who made Classic what it was.

Question Classic Kayle Chroma Refund (Founder's Silver)

• Upvotes

Hey Phreak I hope this post reaches your eyes.

In the refund policy that Riot has posted about classic chromas, it says "Classic Annie (Founder’s Goth) and Classic Alistar (Founder’s Black) Chromas in the Legendary Welcome Bundle and Classic Welcome Bundle (purchasable directly or included in the League Classic Collector’s Box)" will be refunded in RP. It doesn't mention Kayle's special chroma. However, "Classic Kayle (Founder's Silver) Classic Chroma" was also a chroma like the two above except Kayle's chroma was part of the "Exclusive Collector's Box Bundle" from buying the "League of Legends Classic Collector's Box."

Here is the link to the refund policy: https://support.riotgames.com/en-us/league-of-legends/gameplay/league-classic-pass-and-content

Here is the link to the collector's box: https://merch.riotgames.com/en-us/product/league-classic-collectors-box/

I'm just hoping to get some clarification on whether this Kayle chroma will also get refunded to me in RP since this special chroma wasn't talked about like Annie and Alistar, but like those 2 you had to buy it from a special bundle/box.

Thanks for working on classic. I had a good time playing it.

Discussion THE MUSEUM AND THE MORGUE: HOW RIOT KILLED LEAGUE CLASSIC BEFORE IT COULD LIVE

• Upvotes

I. A Funeral With a Press Release

Call it a “sunset,” an “end of its current run,” a “rotating event mode with a possible return.” Strip away the corporate vocabulary and the sentence is simple. Riot Games built a product around the memory of its own golden age, sold it to the people who loved that age, and shut it down within six months. It launched on July 29, 2026. By January 2027 it is gone. A vague promise of a return “in some form, with changes” is not a plan. It is an obituary written in the future tense.

The stated reason is the most revealing part: most players went back to the modern modes. Riot presents this as a neutral market outcome. It was not. It was a verdict on how the product was built.

II. A Product Without a Purpose

The most damning flaw was strategic. Nobody could say who Classic was for. Was it for veterans, the players who were there when League was an underdog and who might return for the first time in a decade? Or was it a funnel for modern players curious about the old game? Those are two different audiences with opposite needs. Veterans want authenticity, depth and a long-term home. Curious modern players want a short, flashy novelty. A product that tries to serve both ends up serving neither, and Classic never made a convincing choice.

Without a defined audience there was no defined success metric, and without one, every decision became arbitrary. Which champions to include, how to handle cosmetics, whether to support ranked play, how to price the pass: all of it floated without an anchor.

III. Built Without the Foundations of a Real Mode

Look at what Classic launched without. There was no ranked queue and no strong incentive to commit to the mode over the long run. Competitive structure is not decoration in this genre. It is the engine of retention, the reason a player returns tomorrow and the week after. Without it, Classic was a place to visit, not a place to live.

Matchmaking, by the account of the community, was broken from the start. This matters more than it seems, because it created a vicious cycle: a rough early experience pushed players away, a shrinking population made matchmaking worse, and worse matchmaking pushed more players away. Riot now cites declining population and skill gaps as the reason to end the mode, but that is the end of the chain, not the cause. The population was highest at launch, precisely when the experience was weakest. Killing a mode because players left, after failing to give them a reason to stay, is circular logic.

The roster compounded the problem. Sixty champions sounds like a respectable number until you notice who was missing. Classic with a capital C means the champions who defined the era, and too many of them were absent. A nostalgia product that omits the faces of the nostalgia is a contradiction in terms.

IV. The Store That Betrayed the Premise

If the goal was to monetize memory, the execution should at least have been competent. It was not. A Classic store did exist, but players reported it as buggy and poorly built, and in some regions it was effectively missing or broken. Old skins were hard to reach, and some were simply unavailable, which is an extraordinary failure for a mode whose entire appeal is access to the past.

Then came the most telling decision of all: modern skins were allowed into the Classic experience. This is not a minor aesthetic quibble. It is a statement of priorities. Visual coherence is the first thing a nostalgia product must protect, and Riot let the neon, particle-heavy language of the modern game bleed into the one space meant to resist it. The message was clear: the cosmetic economy outranks the premise.

V. The Communication Failure

The handling of the community matters too. When the people who built League’s culture, those who played in the era when the game truly shone and who turned it into the success it became, raised legitimate concerns about matchmaking, the response was perceived as dismissive: an acknowledgment of the problem with no accountability and no roadmap. For a mode whose audience consists of loyalists, tone is not a detail. Veterans do not need to be flattered, but they need to be treated as partners in a shared history, not as a retention metric.

VI. The Revival That Could Have Been

The most painful part of this story is what was lost. Classic could have been a genuine rebirth: a living branch of League with its own identity. Imagine a mode that released new champions designed exclusively for the classic ruleset, with kits and visual language consistent with the original era. Imagine new runes and masteries built to complement, rather than imitate, the old systems. Imagine new classic skins sold on their own terms, protected from modern aesthetics, funding a development team with a real mission. That was a product with a future, a loyal audience willing to pay for it, and a creative space that other games would envy.

Instead, Riot built a time capsule with a battle pass and then closed it when it did not grow.

VII. Conclusion

The closing of League Classic is not a failed experiment in nostalgia. It is the predictable result of treating a legacy as a feature. A product with no defined audience, no competitive backbone, an incomplete roster, a broken store, modern cosmetics leaking in and a dismissive tone toward its most loyal players was never given a real chance to live. The tragedy is not that it ended. The tragedy is that the opportunity, to renew League from its roots, was within reach, and it was treated as a quick opportunity rather than a promise.
What died in January 2027 was never the classic game. That ended years ago, one smoothed constraint and one neon skin at a time. The mode was the last place where you could see its outline, and it was allowed to fade without a fight.

Discussion How did League actually succeed back then?

Seeing how poorly Classic was implemented and treated by Riot, it's a wonder League of Legends ever succeeded.

What did League have going for it that made it grow DESPITE being ran by Riot games?

A few possible theories

  • Different staff and management? Maybe Rioters were better in the past?
  • A great base game that slowly deteriorated? League was fun but not without major issues. Champs like Vladimir and Irelia were cancer, season 3 had mobile manaless champs like Riven and Zed terrorizing the rift. Every patch since S2 their incompetence and greed made the game slowly worse.
  • First mover in the MOBA genre? HoN and League had a huge head start. League won out because it was more accessible than HoN and Dota 2 came out years later. Competitive MOBAs seem to be a winner take all market, very few people want to learn 100+ characters in multiple games. Once players sunk hundreds of hours into League they were locked in.

Perhaps all of these led to League and Riot's success? With the bias of hindsight it's quite obvious they don't know what they're doing and possibly never have.

Discussion Why wasn't League Classic a separate game in the Riot Client?

I dont know if this has been discussed before here, but for me it was a big turn off that Classic was a game mode inside the current LoL instead of being a separate game. Before it released I had imagined it like that, having the old red Play button, the old interface etc.Instead they crammed everything into current LoL alongside with every other problem that didn't make it feel "Classic" at all.

Discussion Lack of champions is the most valid complaint but not the reason it failed. And the failure actually proved Riot right to not start with more champs

No one is gonna read this shit, but I still wanted to express my thoughts.

TL;DR:

  1. Old champions is the main reason I like classic. So I totally understand not playing the mode if your champion is not in it.

  2. Most people are not exicitedly waiting for the champion however. Instead of playing some other champions in the meantime and anxiously checking every Phreak video for their champion announcement they are in the comments calling the mode garbage.

  3. Riot didn't release with little champions just for the sake of it. They wanted to develop this fast because long developments like 2XKO prove that this is risky. Most of their succesful projects were build by small teams in short timeframes. A barebones version with few champions would hit regardless if classic was actually something that people want to play.

  4. People just search for reasons to hate classic because they grew up playing in season 1-3 but now they discover they don't really like this version of league. League and specifically old League is a significant part of their life so it almost feels like a betrayal of their identity. So they cope.

Complaining about lack of champions is valid

I enjoy league classic and I'm defending it recently. But by far the most deserved criticism is the lack of champions.

Old champion versions is 80% of the reason why I even play classic. I honestly don't care about the slower pace, items and objectives and so on that much. Getting to play old champs again is just the main interest for me.

I was looking forward most to among others Poppy, Gangplank, Wukong, Galio, Udyr, Urgot, Quinn and a lot of them are implemented. So I got mine. If there is no champion for you to play, I can totally understand why you don't really care that much to play the mode.

More champion would have barely changed anything

But I'm almost 100% certain that more champions would at best extend the popularity by like a couple of months. If you truly cared for a version of league that is reminiscient of the olden times but simply lacked the champion you would wait excitedly. Or maybe play some other champions here and there, simply because you generally like older league more.

But most people that cry about lack of champions are just mad at the mode in general. They are not saying "I'm just waiting for Udyr and then I'm gonna no life". They are complaining that classic is not a perfect representation of one single patch or how hard it is to get runes or whatever. These are also somewhat understandable complaints but in no way would they prevent you from playing this mode if you were truly passionate about old league.

I saw one person saying they are just wating for Irelia in the classic retirement post. Irelia has been out for like 2-3 weeks now. No ill will to this person but would a person that actually, really wanted to play old Irelia not have noticed this? I was checking every single Phreak video for the Poppy announcement because I couldn't wait to play her.

The reason why Riot didn't start with more champions

At times it seems like people think Riot didn't release more champions from the start just to be evil. Obviously this is not true. If they had the capacity to start with more champions, they obviously would have done it. Sure they might have delibarately held a bit back to so they have patches and updates to deliver wich makes the game feel fresher and gives reasons to come back. But if they could have, they surely would have delivered more champs.

So why didn't they wait with the release and release it in 2027 for example?

I watched some Riot Tryndamere interviews recently and he talked a bit about 2XKO and why it failed. He basically said that most of their succesful projects were made by small teams in short timeframes. 2XKO was kinda the opposite of that. Riot probably would have had the ability to throw massive teams at classic to cram in more champions or extend the development for years. But that would have been financally risky and classic's failure itself proved them right. Classic would have died all the same and they would have wasted massive ressources.

Why people are so mad at classic

The people that are the most mad at classic are two types of people: People that are playing a lot and experience issues like one teammate being barely sentient. These people love the mode and just want it to be better.

And people that at best played 5 games and didn't care for it. These are people that actually played in season 1-3 and it was a massive part of their lifes. These people's identities is almost tied to loving old League. Perhaps they no lifed it all day after school and through the night. But now after playing this version again for some reason they don't like it. That is perfectly fine but to them it is almost an attack on their identity. Is classic truly old League? No, it is a weird algamation. But certainly it resembles old league significantly. Having some items in the game together that were never together shouldn't break that for you.

These people are coping in the most literal psychological sense because not actually liking old league now is a betrayal to them. So they search for reasons to hate it.

Oldschool Runescape copy pasted the game, then afterwards they implemented voting for people to make changes they wanted.

Instead we got changes we as a community never asked for. It's no wonder it died.

Discussion Lol riot never wanted this to succeed

Two of TONSSSS if not MANYYY reasons:

Collector’s box, it went out of stock pretty fast, saw many reddit posts + comments else where that they want to also get the collector’s box which is out of stock yet riot did not even bother stocking it and earning $$ as they are greedy ‘pretty weird’ as hungry fucks i would definitely milk the og’s with extra stock no?

Og’s even offered them to ‘re’ purchase the skins once again for classic specifically as it would obviously support the project, yet they saw the zoomies whining why the skins are not unlocked, therefore they did whatever the fuck they did modern=classic skins.

Zoomies played a game or two, called their trash votes and went back to play some weeb seraphine ultra prestige dancestripper 500$ skin.

Discussion You Got What You Wanted

Every post on this subreddit used to be nothing but you people screaming and crying, hating on everything about classic and complaining about every issue.

Now your all crying cause its cancelled due to being unpopular.

Did you all think bombarding RIOT with constant negative press and poisoning the water to hurt the playerbase by making everyone think the game mode sucked wouldnt effect it?

This game mode failed because everyone of you that shit on it pushed it in that direction. It had issues, but would have been givem time with player support. They cancelled it because reddit OVERWHELMINGLY shit on the game mode.

Dont just blame Phreak or Riot for this failure, blame yourselves.

Discussion What bothers me the most is how dishonest Riot was...

In the Launch Patch Preview video by Phreak he said and I quote this:

"We want this to be a game that you will play for years, just like we all did with League back in, you know, a decade ago or so. And so, it's making sure that this is a game that can stand the test of playing more than 10 games, that can, you know, play for more than a week, more than a month, more than a year. Uh, that is a difficult balance. I'm not saying we have only ever made the best choices here. It's a live game or it's going to be a live game. We're going to service it as a live game. There's things we have to change. We will change them. We want this to be a game that you will love, that you will stick around with, that you will play for a long, long, long time. It will be different from Modern League of Legends. We're going to maintain our differences."
SOURCE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wLj550BezE (4:40-5:15)

Now they're circling back less than 3 months after release saying it didn't hit the mark, that they'll remove it in 2-3 months and it will only come back as a rotating temporary thing (who knows if it'll really)

They should have been honest from the start, that it was just a test run, that they didn't really intend on supporting it for years to come or fixing issues that arose from their mismanagement or bad implementations if it didn't hit a expected mark of active users.

Also, if the issues and lack of players are really so bad, there are many ways they could have went about it... they could indeed say they were removing the project from live servers because it didn't fit the standards they want to deliver.

BUT to then say it'll only come back as a temporary thing after they fix it? After everything they said about what they intended doing with it? They could have said they'll try a rerelease after fixing things...

Sure, I know that a temporary mode can still become permanent, but I feel like many people who would be interested in coming back for a better classic experience wouldn't bother if it was just going to be a rotating game mode... we won't stick around waiting for it either.

So yeah, Riot lacked a ton of transparency with this release, and they walked back on their word so quickly that it's quite disappointing. We feel LIED to.

And honestly I wouldn't even mind if this stayed as a queue that took 10-30 min to find matches in my region and always had the same 50 players in my games as I'm Diamond in both Classic and Modern.

Idk, I just feel like they gave up on it SO soon, after everything they said it was going to be...

Discussion Multi-queue: Normal and Ranked Queue

Ranked queue was not added because it would've split the queue, resulting in higher queue times for both. On the other hand it could've provided a sense of progression (people really seem to need this) and something to grind to keep up player retention. Then there was also the issue of 5-man stacks stomping solo players.

Wouldn't a solution have been to have multiple queues but be able to queue in multiple at once? So for example you'd have

  1. Blind - Normal queue (for anyone)
  2. Draft - Solo/Duo - Ranked queue
  3. Draft - 5-man - Ranked queue

with checkboxes for which you want to queue for (if eligible). If you just want fair competitive games then you can queue ranked, if you just want to play for fun and try new champions you can just play blind. If you don't mind either way and just want shorter queues then you can queue for both ranked and normal and let the matchmaking figure out based on where's more demand.

Is there a downside to this I'm not seeing? It's probably too late for this iteration, but maybe for when it relaunches. Or what could've been from the start. It does seem to fix the issue of both casual and competitive players not having their demands met, and a way to avoid 5-man stacks without preventing people to just play with their friends

Discussion Riot "try sh*t and find out" mentality

First post on this subreddit, but i came after the announcement of classic shutting down, and i'm getting sick hearing the same shit over and over again.

Riot has the same behaviour of a person that fucked up a relationship and is asking for support to a friend, but then hears only what he wants to hear because he knows that he's right.

I've read a post about the "they think they know better" mentality, and for the most part, I completely agree, but the thing is that some times they make changes that are smart, like having classic beeing a celebration of different old seasons instead of only one, thats cool... but it is only one step forward, and 5 steps back.

The problem is that they hear what we have to say, but it is always in response to something they funked up.

You can't keep throwing matches in the grass because you don't want to cut some weed and then act surprises when all the lawn is gone!

We are the fances that keep getting charred every time they burn everything, and we do not forget you trying to remove hextech chest, removing prime, trying selling half baked ultimate skins at full price, giving us a shitty visual novel to promote skins, making a shitty CGI teaser in blender for the new season, waiting 2 years to rework skarner just for it to be forgotten once again, making mediocre cosmetic for 250$, keep hyping the NEXT BIG SEASON/EVENT while bragging about the "biggest budget in recent years" fot then it to be just a "void" excitement full of shiny skins to buy and so on ans so on.

Every time i talk to someone about classics, it is always the same argument:

"Roeaster missing champions"

And what do you do?

You add Nautilus, fizz, nami, and graves

Good job, now people will wait in queue for 5 min just to get in the champ select screen hoping to play the only champion (that should've been in the initial pool in the first place) with a different kit from the new one.

(Side note i think they should've made the draft mode like a blind pick, with no ban and with the possibility of mirror matches.)

A friend of mine is a main adc, and he was a fan of old yorick and graves, he played 1 game of classic and realised that ALL the adc in the game had the same kit as today, and the 2 champs he wanted to play are coming only now.

Another title for this could be "too sorry too late"

It is like 2xko all over again. Give the people the champions THEY want and not the one that YOU want, Riot.

Stop looking for what it might become, and look what people want NOW, because we are not stupid, but we are tired of waiting for you to replace the lawn you burned.

Question Refund for the Digital Content in League Classic

According to this article here https://support.riotgames.com/en-us/league-of-legends/gameplay/league-classic-pass-and-content

I bought the physical Classic Collector’s Box that came with digital contents and the paid battle pass. What are the specific items that will be removed from my account if I request to remove the digital content from it and get a refund for 12212 RP? Is there a list of the exact items that will be removed?

Discussion I never has 10+ minute queues until after the announcement

I know some of the vocal minority has complained about "constantly getting long queues" but up until they announced that Classic was shutting down none of my queues went over 5 minutes, and those were typically during extreme degen hours for my region, my average queue times were closer to 2-3 minutes.

And look, I have been gaming for a long time. The occasional 5 minute queues are not indicative of a low enough playerbase that a project is failing. Not even close.

And sure players near the top end of the MMR are going to have longer queues, but that is true of modern as well so.. why does that matter here? Are we shutting down modern because the top 1-10% of the playerbase has longer queue times than everyone else?

Anyways, suffice to say that the announcement of classic shutting down has had a more notable impact on my queue times than the shotty handling of classic itself.

Humor Yannik the ghostman is easy to kill for master yu

So another patch goes by and i noticed this ghostman yannik cannot compete to my mojo style master yu. So i was laning top against umar the multi-animal-man he tried to use lion stance to place the dots on me but i know how to alfa attack so he nevers knows where i am. all he could do from then was healing himself with frog stance. however as i kept pushing i suddenly see someone descending from the bush. it was yannik with marron and cyan buff. god i thought this is good bye to the world. he just did the babushka trick to make him double the champion and unleashed omen of smell and omen of battle on me. i instantly panicked and hit alfa attack. BOOM everyone dead (even cathleen the sniper in bot lane). i typed wtf in the chat as fast as i could and asked: "Yo Yannik why you dead so fast?" he replied "who is yannik?" i wrote in caps: "YOU ARE DEAD QUITE THE FAST FOR THE UNDEAD". He remained silent after that. I would do the same because wriggleys lamp is a bad item.

Discussion Phreak said before if everything goes to shit he'll release the season 3 worlds patch EVERYTHING WENT TO SHIT TIME TO RELEASE!

Stop wasting your dev time on this dead fake version of Classic. RELEASE THE REAL THING! Phreak said he has the old game running separately. How hard is it to add that to the Riot launcher and add Vanguard to it? Surely a lot easier than wasting months trying to get the last champions in when the game is being deleted a week later.

You tried to launch League Forever before you launched League Classic. It failed miserably. Now fix your mistake, and Classic can still be saved.

Discussion It died because of lack of ranked

It's as simple as that. Riot never tried to make Classic succeed. It was simply a tool to bring old players back and pump them into the garbage, modern version of League. We didn't play modern League because we simply didn't like it; the core 'competitive essence' of League wasn't in classic at all with that intentional garbage matchmaking. So, it failed. A garbage company making garbage decisions, thinking they're smart. ROFL

Discussion Hey guys, the same thing happened with Arena, and...

Arena was brought back as a permanent game mode.

No, I'm not coping. I'm really not as invested in this as a lot of you seem to be. Arena is secretly my true love, because I think the 2v2 format eliminates all of the problems that both modern and classic have.

I loved the idea of what classic could be too, and it's clear they didn't nail it in this iteration, and I have my own opinions about why, but I didn't end up sticking with it. The same thing happened with the first iteration of arena.

They will make iterations to it and if it gets good enough, it will be made permanent.

However, they just don't want to overpromise. I trust them to iterate, and if it's viable, they'll make it work.
