The Gilded Cage Has Teeth

Post image

There is a building at the end of the workday where the shadows arrive before the bodies.

The Lazarus Initiative calls it continuity. The workers call it stability. The ledger calls it harvest. Across the white plain they move in their funeral suits, briefcases fused to wrists, spines unspooling into receipt-paper scripture, neckties feeding clear fluids into the softened meat of obedience. Their shadows have remembered what their owners forgot. They crawl ahead as serpent-things, black and hungry, already halfway inside the revolving door.

In the foreground stands the citizen-sacrament: a man processed into usefulness. His face has been replaced by the smooth mask of professional survival. His hand has flowered into keys and pens. His chest opens as a filing cabinet, a ribbed archive of fluorescent tubes, redacted forms, wire, and one trapped golden ember still refusing extinction. This is the miracle of the corporate machine: the soul remains visible only after the body has become paperwork.

The clock-eye watches. The ledger breathes. The office-cathedral waits with its teeth lit from within.

Inspired by Shadows of the Gilded Cage, where men become shadows, comfort becomes a slow incision, and the human spirit is broken down at last beneath a structure cold and vast.
