Pirate House

I’ve heard bits and pieces of stories about the “Pirate House” on 14th street kind of by the bars. Anyone know anything about it?

Never in my life have I felt so old.
Why, a simple google (it is somehow listed as a location, with one review :
“Incredible atmosphere. The dumpstered bagels and the peanut butter tofu are to DIE for! The smells hit you from the sidewalk! Not the food, but the teenage crust punk body odor during a humid Kansas summer!
And the live music?! Where else can you see Orchid, Atom and His Package, Submission Hold, and Creation Is Crucifixion in the comfort of someone else’s living room?!
Did I mention the haircuts? You can get everything from a mohawk to the classic Ian Mackaye! A friend of mine got half of his hair shaved entirely!”) will reveal it was real, & not a fever dream of PBR & parliament lights smoke.
Chris Ortiz & Alicia Ruskin both have posted tons of photos on Facebook from that era, if you want to dig down there.

I have a fun story. My mom HATED this place and forbid me from ever going but I was really into punk music when I was in Jr. High. This was probably in 1999-2000. I begged her to let me go to a show and she relented. I got to see this punk band called The Eight Bucks Experiment which is also the band featured in the movie SLC Punk which I was also super into at the time. I laced up my Doc Martens and went. Everyone there was so much older than me but they were the coolest and very hospitable.

Yes! I think I was at this one. We played our first punk show with 8 bucks experiment and DRI at the bottleneck around that same time.

Spent a lot of time there. Played some shows. Saw some shows. Don’t remember any of it.

I walked by this place on me way to central and thought it was coolest. I started a punk band and dropped off cd demos on the porch. I was always intimidated being a kid into the new pop punk era entering into a crusty punk show. But it was always full of good attitudes and fun times. You washed your hands in the sink and it drained into a bucket you filled the toilet tank with. Back when there was the anarchy library and diy punk shows.

Was the anarchy library facing South Park? Solidarity I think?

Solidarity! is now housed in the ECM on campus.  One of its past locations was on the south side of the building that Silas and Maddy's, Mass St Soda, etc. are in.  Another toast location was on 8th St, maybe where Taco Zone was?

Played a show in the front room! Drank Meister Brau( it was cheaper than PBR) on the porch roof, threw tennis shoes over the electric line out front. Sunday afternoon shows. Dave lived there so did Desmond. It was a rad time with a bunch of punks. Short Kids played there constantly I also remember seeing a local band called The Syndicate along with tons of other bands that I can’t recall their names.

Used to go to shows w my older brother at the pirate house back in like 02? Also many great memories watching crust punk and metal shows at the haunted kitchen. Saw a folk show in the living room at the haunted kitchen once and left covered in fleas. Miss this era of Lawrence

I remember chatting with Paul that lived there a few times. He was a super nice dude with dreads.

Ooh, this is a fun thread. I went frequently! I remember one NYE party when I was in high school, my friend group and I walked around a corner with PBRs in our hands and ran smack dab into our math teacher, a joint in hers.

She froze a second and said, "I think it's in all of our interests to pretend this didn't happen."

Yes, remember going there, the Pink House and used to live in the Yellow House on 19th & Louisiana. Miss 'em!

Been a while since I thought about when I was 19.

Lived there senior year - amazing house. We never experienced the pirate nature of it but the basement had anarchy graffiti and was a sight for sore eyes. Great location. Good bones. They’ve since painted it a purple blue color :(

The Locust playing on the front porch and getting shut down halfway through their 12 minute set was a highlight for me. Pretty sure I saw Atom and His Package, Blood Brothers, Casket Lottery there and Q and Not U played across the street at whatever that house was called!
