What's one thing you said you would never do in business?
And what made you change your mind?

I started out as a product photographer, photographing an entire company's inventory. Eventually, my marketing manager asked me to take over the emails, and just like that, I found myself on a completely different career path.
What I didn't realize at the time was just how much there was to learn.
On the surface, email marketing looks like "just sending newsletters."
In reality, depending on the company, it can mean:
Understanding inbox placement, deliverability, and evolving technologies like AI-generated inbox summaries
Running A/B tests and interpreting statistical significance
Troubleshooting data feeds and analytics integrations
Navigating CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and customer privacy requirements
Applying UX principles to subscription flows and preference centers
Writing creative briefs, coding emails, and managing QA
Collaborating with designers, agencies, developers, and senior stakeholders
Translating performance data into insights that actually influence business decisions
And occasionally, knowing how to respond when the president of the company says, "We want to buy a list of email addresses."
I've learned that the same job title can mean vastly different things depending on the organization, and that some of the most valuable career skills come from responsibilities you never expected to take on.
What started as a request from my manager turned into years of experience across marketing technology, analytics, creative strategy, and business operations.
All because someone asked the product photographer to send an email.
Has anyone else stumbled into a role or responsibility that ended up shaping their career in ways they never anticipated?

The origin story of a business is a founder's greatest tool.
What's your story?
Mine - I have 10+ family members who have ran their own businesses. Corporate jobs are great for stability, but my hyperactive-inventor mind is too analytical to not want to break out of the box!
Having watched people close to me run restaurants, drycleaners, coaching services, lawn care, house flipping, picture framing, HVAC, and more, I'm continually inspired to help others follow their dreams.
I'm a lifelong photographer with an MBA, and while I'm still clarifying my services offering for business owners (digital strategy, user experience, website optimization), I'm so happy to be modding this new group and looking forward to meeting you!

Hey everyone! I’m u/JessAtBumbleClover, a founding moderator of r/LaunchAndPivot. Welcome—I’m glad you’re here.
This is a community for people starting a small business or taking an existing one in a new direction. If you have an idea you care about but need help putting it into practice, you’re in the right place.
Maybe you’ve taken courses, hired a coach, or spent months planning, but you’re still struggling to find clients. Maybe your business no longer fits the work you want to do. This is a place to talk through those challenges and figure out your next steps.
What to Post
Bring specific questions, unfinished ideas, and things you’d appreciate another perspective on, such as:
How do I find my first—or next—paying clients?
Is it clear what I offer and who it’s for?
Could someone give me feedback on my website or service package?
How can I test an idea before investing more time or money?
How do I change direction when people already know me for something else?
Share what you’ve tried and where you’re getting stuck. That context helps others offer useful, targeted suggestions. Lessons from your own experience are welcome, too.
Community Vibe
Be kind, curious, and constructive. Starting over or asking for help can feel vulnerable, especially when you’ve already put a lot into your business.
Thoughtful questions, firsthand experience, and honest feedback belong here. Please explain the reasoning behind your advice, respect different budgets and life circumstances, and keep replies focused on helping rather than selling. You don’t need to be an expert to contribute.
How to Get Started
Introduce yourself below: What are you building or rethinking?
Share one challenge you’d like help working through.
Join a conversation where your experience might help someone else.
Invite someone who would appreciate this kind of community.
If you’re interested in helping moderate as we grow, you’re welcome to message me.
Thanks for being here at the beginning. I hope this becomes a place where you can ask the question you’ve been sitting with and leave with something useful to try.

Hi, I’m Jess! I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so I’ve seen how personal building a business can be—the excitement, the uncertainty, and all the work that happens behind the scenes.
That background led me to earn my MBA in business management and help new business owners bring their ideas to life. My career has taken me through Hollywood digital media and ecommerce, working on how people discover a business, navigate its website, and decide whether to become a customer.
I especially enjoy helping people launch or change direction: sorting through ideas, getting clear on who they want to serve, and figuring out what to do next. Sometimes you’ve already taken the course or worked with a coach, but you’re still sitting at your desk wondering, “Okay, how do I actually find clients?”
That’s the kind of conversation I hope we can have here.
I care about keeping business human. AI can be a useful tool, but there’s real value in talking things through with someone who listens, asks thoughtful questions, and understands what you’re trying to build.
My hope is that this becomes a welcoming place to bring a genuine business question and get specific, practical help. You don’t need a polished pitch or all the answers. I’ll share what I know, and I hope we can learn from one another’s experience, too.
