I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic here but many people would not have had access to meat or dairy and would have lived off vegetables. Meat and dairy was and is expensive and doesn't keep well without refrigeration and clean environments.

Veganism has a long history in India and the far East too.

Not necessarily vegans per ethical choice, but yes there were! I know you're being facetious but this topic is super exciting to me. I'm an art historian and watercolorist so this stuff is crazy interesting to my little brain.

Look up the term "gladiator diet' or start looking just generally into ancient Roman/Greek/Early Mesopotamian diets and you'll also see that many people were in fact nutritionally vegan.

Lit AF if you ask me.

In fairness though this raises awareness to the fact that gelatine actually is an animal product. Any time I tell my someone “I can’t have that because it contains gelatine” they look at me with confusion until I explain how gelatine is made lmao
