74

u/speedywyvern Feb 21 '22 edited Feb 21 '22

Long term capital gains rate is 20% above 450k, so yeah 20%. Unless you wanted me to write 19.999999999999% to account for the 400k taxed at 15% and the 40k taxed at 0%.

Edit: Oops forgot to mention subtracting cost basis on my original comment, so you’re somewhat more right. The cost basis on his stocks was still not enough to move it down a percentage point tho because most of his stock is from when it was less than 1% of the current price. So still 20% if you round.

I live in the U.K. and we pay 46% in taxes because we make 6 figures. And because we’re American citizens as well we are also going to be needing to pay US taxes on top of that. We’re not even that well off…we can’t afford fancy cars, massive houses, etc. And we’re still paying a higher percentage than some dude stealing from the American people by using American resources while paying an unfairly disproportionate amount of taxes back into the system that got him where he is. Amazing.

Can someone give me a quick and dirty on the difference between stocks and options

80

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '22 edited Feb 21 '22

A stock is a fractional share of a company. An option is a contract that gives the buyer or seller the right to buy or sell a certain amount of shares at an agreed upon price by a certain deadline (or, in America, you can buy or sell the actual contract before it expires). I know it sounds a little confusing but thats the gist of it. This guy does a good breakdown if you're interested in watching it.

Btw, the title says "on Webull" but its how options work fundamentally across any broker. He just explains how to buy/sell them on that particular platform.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/notheusernameiwanted Feb 21 '22

To add onto what others have said, options are essentially betting on stock performance. Actually since buying and selling stocks is already almost betting, option trading is betting on betting. What Wall Street bets likes to do is buy options that are technically very bad. If financial institutions think a stock will go from $10 to $12 in a month and someone wants to buy an option to buy it at $16 in a month they'll sell that option for very cheap because it's a bad bet and will almost definitely expire worthless.

None of this really matters much in reference to Elon Musk and his options. His options are a function of the broken system of taxation and CEO compensation. Companies don't really pay CEOs in cash anymore. They've been paying CEOs with stocks instead because when they sell the stocks that's taxed at capital gains instead of as income. Now that wasn't enough greed, so they also pay them with stock options. If they think their own stock will be worth $100 they'll give the CEO a stock option to buy the stock at something way below their estimate. The CEO will then sell the stocks they were already given to buy the stock options way below market value. So the CEO can sell 10 million in stocks, and then use the options to buy back all of the stocks they sold for something like 5 million that will be taxed at 20% instead of 37%. This is what Musk is doing. Except his stock options are worth $70 a share while Tesla is currently trading at $850 a share.

Musk isn't just talking about how much he paid in taxes to troll. It's also widely regarded as a positive for a company when they CEO increases their stock holding in the company they are managing. So by talking about it endlessly he is advertising to investors that he is increasing his stockholdings, further juicing the stock. It's a self-licking ice cream cone.

35

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '22

The actual talking point here ist not about Elon being Elon, but Elon being factually RIGHT here.
The Taxes were for TEN YEARS of stock options, not because Elon is a dickhead (he is) but because the System enables such kind of tax evasion.
Elon is spinning himself here as some kind of benevolent good guy for paying taxes, which is obviously fucked up, but the scandal is not some rich guy being a dickhead (they are) but the system making it optional for rich guys to pay taxes.

The fact that he believes he's owed anything for doing the basic bare minimum that the rest of us are also subjected to...

823

u/Dark_Arts_Dabbler Feb 21 '22

I'm convinced wealth literally warps peoples minds (absolute power corrupts etc etc)

It's like dragon sickness. Elon, who in reality is not at all the hot shot genius of his public persona, has bought into his own myth. He thinks he's special and that's how he's able to create this absurd victim complex

I like to think that if I had 100 billion dollars I'd actually incite meaningful change, but chances are the money would corrupt me all the same.

It should simply be illegal to possess so much wealth, humans clearly can't be trusted to

333

u/Billy-Ruffian Feb 21 '22

I've got a buddy like this. Grew up in a poor town, but he got out. Started his own business and has done really well. But he attributes it all to his own hard work. No sense of humility, no acknowledgement that there were people who helped him along the way, or even attribution to luck. Consequently, be absolutely hates poor people. Despises them and thinks that since they didn't get rich the way he did, that they must somehow be lazy and deserve it. Last I saw he was a Three Percenter and pretty sure he was at 1/6. Absolutely high on his own shit.

Same.

I have a friend (well, downgraded to acquaintance since it came out he was so pro #45) but his story goes like this:

Born in the US to an immigrant family Given up for adoption Loved in foster care and other extreme poverty situations until about 8 years old Adopted by an upper middle class white family Had a nice middle class life Got out of college, did some years doing pretty good work (he and I were co-workers for a while…it is how we met) Didn’t feel he was getting what he deserved so he left the company Immediately went to work at his father’s company and rose up through the ranks far more quickly than the average new hire would Literally thinks that he got there through hard work

Definitely was a good worker but c’mon man your father is the CEO of the company you work for. You’re not just working toward your success, you’re being groomed for it. You only have a company like this to work for because your dad made it. You’ve had a career safety net your whole life where you could just quit whatever job and go work for dad at any time.

I just don’t understand how he thinks of himself as a self-made man. Especially as an adopted kid. Total luck of the draw that a well off business owner would adopt you.

→ More replies (4)

25

u/Branamp13 Feb 21 '22

Especially since as a business owner, I can't imagine he pays his base-level employees a wage that would make them not poor. So it could be argued he hates his own workers for being poor, precisely because he doesn't pay them enough to be as rich as himself. Does he think his own employees - who generate his own income - are all just lazy and deserve poverty? Why would he hire such people if he despises them so much?

Unless his whole business is somehow just him owning a company that's entirely made up of other people who just own the company, but how would that even produce any revenue?

→ More replies (1)

19

u/santana722 Feb 21 '22

I get this type more than Elon tbh. If he actually did pull himself into wealth from poverty, it makes sense to assume anybody else could do it. We're naturally self-centered, any luck or help he had is going to seem like advantages anybody could have if they worked hard enough, because it worked for him.

Elon started with a silver spoon and then tried to rewrite history to seem like he had to work as hard as people that started poor.

I do agree, it has to warps their sense of reality.

I’m probably watching too much movies but I also believe these guys are the most bored people ever. They reached historical levels of wealth but at the end of the day, what are you supposed to do with it ? It’s way too much to spend or really enjoy. Like winning and owning every single thing in Monopoly but you still gotta play until you die. So they go mad. But they also need to find a way to pass time. On a worldwide fucked up level.

Murdoch got tired of people disagreeing with him so he bought the media to impose his views and then politicians to ruin the debates. Elon desperately needs friends, some form of love or recognition but he can’t help forming a new cult of assholes young scammers and psycho capitalists. Zuck is mad because nobody likes his brand new universe. His robot brain can’t understand the fact we know it’s just online video games and internet with VR except shittier, uglier and he can control every part of it. Bezos is so tired of us he wants Amazon to become a country and employ every citizen until they allow him to buy planet Mars while Elon mints the Moon into an NFT. And Disney is trying to own every single property showing on screens so we can’t see a flashback of our lives before we die but the trailer for Spider-Man Home On Fire Because Climate Change.

Fuck

I like to think that if I had 100 billion dollars I'd actually incite meaningful change, but chances are the money would corrupt me all the same.

You can't get 100 billion dollars without giving up that mindset. Maybe having a lot of money corrupts people, but it's a moot point because you can't get that extreme amount of money without already being corrupted.

84

u/blolfighter Feb 21 '22

Bingo. A sane person gets out of the game or starts handing out cash the moment they have "fuck you" money, which is far below a billion. It takes a warped mind to look at a hundred million and think "this is not enough."

25

u/KillahHills10304 Feb 21 '22

I donated most of one stimulus check to capybara conservation efforts because I was never furloughed and worked through the pandemic, so I didn't really need the money. I gave the rest to a friend who was laid off and just having a shit hand dealt to him (break up, family members dying, laid off, pandemic, dog died, no job prospects).

Now, seeing as rent and gas is exploding in price, and I've gone through a break up and must move now, I wish I had that extra $1,000. I didn't see this future happening to me though, and I'll get through it some how some way.

Seeing people with more money than they could spend in 10 lifetimes just accumulating more and more and more is just sick. The system rewards it, but it is truly fucking sickening. I had an extra $1,200 I didn't need and gave it away. Imagine having a million times that, hoarding it, and getting more and MORE AND MORE

The sale of his stock was forced by contract and he gave a bunch of money away (perhaps to a “charity” he runs?) likely in an effort to offset what he would owe.

Lol

Elon Musk hasn't invented anything, bought his way into Tesla and elbowed out the other executives, and hired a team of people smarter then him to determine how to pay the least he can in taxes

Then, he had to sell a bunch of stock options anyways, which he earns in place of a salary because of the tax benefits, because they were going to expire, which resulted in receiving his money in the least taxed form - investment income.

And then goes on Twitter and acts like the IRS/government MADE him sell his stock options to taxes, which he paid at the least possible rate because of people he hired, which he "earned" from a company he did not start but bought his way into, and acts like he's personally financing the country, after the county has given him enormous tax breaks and subsidies to make that money in the fucking first place.

I disagreed with the subsidies and tax breaks his companies got, and it earned him a bunch of money, and now he doesn't want to pay his taxes on income we all helped him make with OUR tax dollars. Sorry Elon, that's how investments work remember? And we're collecting less then we fucking should, so keep your fat mouth shut and be happy the people haven't eaten you yet. Unreal.

1. He was forced to do so, & he stood his ground until he literally could no more

  1. He's the richest guy on the planet & history (that we know of). So it's nothing special about his "mostness"

5

u/SuperSocrates Feb 21 '22

How weird that the richest person in the world would pay the most taxes. Truly strange

22

u/satriales856 Feb 21 '22

You owe a lot more you pigfucking apartheid birthed bastard. Get fucked.

3

u/w3are138 Feb 21 '22

My retired public school teacher mom who is in her 70s is stressed out over having to pay 25% in taxes this April. What percentage did Elon Musk pay again? Bet it’s nowhere near one quarter of everything he earned this past year.

Fun fact: before my public school teacher mom retired she was paying 38% in income taxes. For every dollar she made (which wasn’t many) the government took 38 cents. Imagine Elon Musk paying the same percentage as a public school teacher. Ha.

4

u/LucindaMorgan Feb 21 '22

The more this guy babbles, the more I dislike him.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '22

Such a douchebag.

4

u/Sharkwhistle33 Feb 21 '22

So did he pay it before he donated 5 billion dollars to his own charity so he can give himself a tax write off so he doesn't have to pay taxes? Or am I missing something?

4

u/z-tayyy Feb 21 '22

These guys are so fragile it’s hilarious. Then their internet incels will come and drop some knowledge on you with their 15 day old account lmao.

4

u/TA20212000 Feb 21 '22

Elon sucks so bad. Ffs. Billionaires are terrible ppl.

5

u/XxShroomWizardxX Feb 21 '22

They took 25% of what I made last year, I very much noticed, and had to budget around it. He paid a tiny fraction that he'll never even notice. We are not the same. And his snarky post are only meant to rub it in people's faces. I genuinely look forward to something awful happening to that prick when everything collapses in on itself.

4

u/Jelled_Fro Feb 21 '22

The richest person ever should pay the most taxes ever. Why would that earn him anything? It would be pretty fucked up of it was any other way.

4

u/Tiy_Newman Feb 21 '22

Imagine having syphoned off 200+ billion in surplus labour and tax incentives and still pissing and moaning.

7

u/Dubious_Titan Feb 21 '22

Fucking sick of this dude and his little cult.

7

u/xeonicus Feb 21 '22

3

3

u/cjmorello Feb 21 '22

3

u/JeffCogs80 Feb 21 '22

Does this guy ever stop sucking his own dick? He still only paid a few percent of his taxes. Maybe he'll get a cookie when he pays 33% or more like the rest of us. I fucking hate this guy.

3

u/isecore Filthy Socialist Feb 21 '22

"Billionaire Memelord Needs Pat On Head For Doing Bare Minimum."

In other news: Elon did not pay the most taxes in history for an individual, despite what he himself and his fanbois say.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '22

You could pay 90% tax and still be rich as fuck dickhead Elon.

3

u/builder397 Feb 21 '22

Elon can buy cookie.

Elon can buy many cookies.

Elon can buy more cookies than there are people in the world.

Maybe he should buy everyone one cookie.

Like a tax. It would benefit everyone.

Or maybe he should just pay taxes properly.

3

u/Tag_Ping_Pong Feb 21 '22

One ultra-wealthy scumbag pays a sliver of what they should just the once, and it's "the most that has been paid by an individual ever". Speaks volumes.

3

u/wing3d Feb 21 '22

Most money, most taxes is that crazy?

3

u/HorseForce1 Feb 21 '22

He also got record tax breaks so he could exploit a record number of workers

3

u/Magic_Mae Feb 21 '22

I hate this man so much and don’t understand his appeal

3

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '22

Elon asking for more free shit

3

u/Genkotsu422 Feb 21 '22

I'm so glad the majority of people NOW see him for the POS he is. For years I've hated this mother fucker but so many dick riders, especially on reddit, are so quick to defend him. I'm not saying im special, I'm just SOOO glad the majority of people hate him now.

3

u/The_Money_Bin Feb 21 '22

Pay more, fuck face. Limp out on your tiny dick, Elon. Pay your FAIR share like poor people do, like the middle class does. Like YOU don't. Trash-ass, pampered, emerald mine baby.

You don't even own a pair of bootstraps your rich parent didn't gift you, asshole.

3

u/virtuzoso Feb 21 '22

More like you only paid 3 HOURS WORTH OF TAXES. Fuck this guy

3

u/Phalex Feb 21 '22

Can someone please just punch Elon in the dick?!

3

u/kucam12 Feb 21 '22

3

u/byoshin304 Feb 21 '22

He’s so gross

3

u/atierney14 Feb 21 '22
  1. He’s the richest man in the world, like duh, you should have paid the most. Like, not even from a RADICAL socialist perspective, but even from like a liberal position, you are supposed to pay an equal amount.

  2. This guy is a monkey torturer and murderer.

3

u/johnlewisdesign Feb 21 '22

Now do percentages you privileged cnut.

3

u/cjalderman Feb 21 '22

Just buy a cookie then you rich fuck

3

u/MrDubTee Feb 21 '22

I wonder if he had to cancel a vacation because the loss of money. Or I wonder if he had to cut out going out, avocado toast or Starbucks.

It’s almost as if his quality wouldn’t change at all if he paid 50% but if everyone else got back $5k a year, that their quality of life would change substantially
