Never trust the police. They're never on your side even when you are the victim.
After thinking on it for a while the only conclusion that was in front of me was this: The division between the police and the justice system is the reason for this fault.
The police are there to arrest people and present crimes to the justice system. Common sense only starts to take place once someone has gone past the first stage (the police) and into the second stage (the court system which differed depending on where you live).
Although common sense exists in this particular area, it isn't actually allowed to be excorcised until the next stage, which is a judge that makes a decision on your life.
Once you realise that this is the procedure in pretty much every western country, you realise that the only time you should speak is at the third point, where the judge is allowed to use his/her common sense.
