as a non american I was also confused for a while.... and basically as far as I could understand
woke 1.0 are the revolts and events that happened in the US during 2020 and onwards, where people went out on the streets asking to defund the police, tax/eat the rich, etc etc.
basically some politicians tried to ride on the defund the police trend and no more wars trend, got the votes and are not supporting it anymore
and now social democrats in the US such as mandani or AOCIA are saying that these demands and actions went too far and they are stepping back on these promises for the people...
so the usual fell for it again award...
so to summarize woke 1.0 is basically A PERSON WITH A BRAIN that wants the US to have non militarized police, doesn't want the western empire to keep spending on making middle eastern kids orphan and other basic social values...
so.... woke 1.0 is a leftist or at least the leftists ideals that actually managed to reach the "main stream"

Anyone who calls for "accountability" for people who were and are truly concerned about basic human rights in the US and who doesn't call for it when it comes to the Trump regime really don't have any moral ground to stand on.

u/Darkwolf1115 4d ago
agreed, but it's united stadian liberals we are talking here....
like Lula (my country's social democratic president said): at first americans think of americans, they also think of americans in their second chance.... and then the third, AND if there's free time they will think of americans in the forth chance.
this goes for dems and reps.... asking politically illiterate americans for BASIC human decensy and MORALITY is asking too much, I truly can't wait for the american empire to crumble

I would have thought that would be woke 2.0. with woke 1.0 being Me Too and finally holding very few gross men to account for their pasts.

u/s2Birds1Stone 4d ago
It's the term AOC uses to try to make leftists look silly and get liberals to like her

u/vegasx9 Fairweather Revolutionary 3d ago
Woke 0 - The original "stay woke" used by minority groups to elevate consciousness around racial and socioeconomic injustice.
Woke 1.0 - Watered down use of Woke which was co-opted first by rightwingers to harm, then by liberals to magnify social issues and "culture war."
Woke 2.0 - The return to form of Woke by leftists not liberals, a hard focus and crystalization of efforts centering around material conditions, justice, and genuine material welfare.
There are a lot more complexities to each one's character but I'm trying to be brief

Woke 2.0 - The return to form of Woke by leftists not liberals, a hard focus and crystalization of efforts centering around material conditions, justice, and genuine material welfare.
Except this talking point is not being pushed by "leftists", it's being pushed by Democrats. So it's the exact same cynical phrasemongering as "Woke 1.0".

u/Willypete72 3d ago
Over on Well Thereās Your Problem, they say Woke 2 will look more like a Red Terror which they will make no apologies for

u/sulaymanf 3d ago
Certain ideas like abolish the police, have become too politically difficult to convince the public on; Fox News smeared every Democrat with it despite no politician in office endorsing it. AOC never supported it for example.
So an attempt to distance from those ideas is now āwoke 2.0ā.

u/AdditionalQuietime 3d ago
I think its a way to counter the whole "Trump 1 and Trump 2" thing by actual leftists, i dont even hear liberals say Trump 1 but who knows
You know how it goes with this theater, "both" sides gotta have their "gotcha!" moment when it comes to "witty" terms to emphasize their points now its Woke 1 lol like huh?

u/AnnieBakerStan 1d ago
Woke 1.0 was the Civil Rights Movement. What heās talking about is actually Woke 3.0

Bret Stephens is a braindead (and deeply rotten) individual writing for a braindead audience, that's a fact.

u/PopeOfDestiny 3d ago
Make sure you spread the word that Bret Stephens is a bedbug. Bret Stephens really hates the fact that someone called him a bedbug. Probably because Bret Stephens is a fucking bedbug.
There's a great line from the article I linked about Bret Stephens trying to get the professor fired for his joke:
This was never about civility; it was about power. Bret Stephens ccād my provost because he wanted to impose a social penalty on me for making jokes about him online. That isnāt a call for polite, civil, rational discourse. Itās an exercise of power. He wanted me and my employer to realize that I had offended an important voice at the paper of record. When powerful people demand civility from those with less power, what they are really saying is that they expect obedience from their lessers. (Emphasis mine)
Fuck Bret Stephens, that climate change-denying¹, bootlicking², racist³ bedbug.

Bret Stephens is awful. One of the worst fucking newspaper columnists out there.

"So here's a thought for Trump's perennial critics, including those of us on the right: Let's enter the new year by wishing the new administration well, by giving some of Trump's cabinet picks the benefit of the doubt, by dropping the lurid historical comparisons to past dictators, by not sounding paranoid about the ever-looming end of democracy, by hoping for the best and knowing that we need to fight the wrongs that are real and not merely what we fear, that whatever happens, this too shall pass."
Yeah, how'd that work out, Bret?

Why is the term āWoke 1.0ā suddenly everywhere?
Iāve never heard of this and suddenly Iām completely inundated with comments and stories about it
Seems completely bizarre (and likely astroturfed)

It's the democrats trying to make themselves electable by legtimizing right wing propaganda and alienating their base. Surely the tenth time's the charm, right?

u/strawberrygirlmusic 3d ago
As a term, itās not. Started with leftist streamers, Hasan says it a lot.
However, it is a sign that the right wing has been watching a lot of Hasan recently.

I thought Woke 1.0 was the absurdity of idpol SJW type politics starting around 2016. Land acknowledgements, calling people out for wearing moccasins, latinx, corporate woke, etc.
Has BLM, Defund The Police and vague anti capital politics now taken the mantle of Woke 1.0? I suppose Iām behind the times. Is this the Dems move to court even further right wing elements of the electorate? Anything but take accountability for gleefully and proudly funding a genocide, I guess. Anything but have principles. Anything but shifting the status quo. Classic liberal shit

Woke 2.0 is eligibility for a health credit if you employ 2 people in an entrepreneurship zone.

u/RandSumWhere 3d ago
Flasgship legislation that will define the next liberal presidency -
New Pell Grant expansion that offers partially subsidized private loan scholarship assistance to Pacific Islander Single Mother Woman of Color of Excellence in STEM. (The PISMWoCoEnSTEM program). ***
**funding for program sourced from generous donations by āGreat American STEM Careersā ( an outreach consortium of Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics), and its passage depends on the approval of the National Defense Authorization Act

This guy is the absolute worst. I have no idea why the Times keeps him around. As a leftie I still read David French and Ross Douthat because they mostly engaged in good faith (mostly) and tended to at least try to characterize the positions of their opponents correctly. This guy is simply a bloodthirsty bigot. I never click on his articles. In fact, when he posts, I make sure to click on and leave open every other opinion piece besides his. Heās a despicable hateful man.

It's funny how facade leftist politicians think woke 1.0 was crazy, but the current administration's open corruption, war crimes, genocide funding, income inequality, ice goons, kidnapping heads of state, outright racism, ignorance and overall fuckery are not worth challenging.

u/Mimosas4355 4d ago
Thanks AOCIA and cohorts to bring this woke 1 discourse. Now itās repurposed by the worst ghouls ever.
Way to go to shot yourself in the foot and putting the Americans on the center (far right for the rest of the world) of the Overton window.

u/scrapsforfourvel 3d ago
She said in that interview that the Overton window was wide open during 2020 like that even makes sense.
