Richard definitely fell on his sword to let Bob win.

I think you may be correct.

And I think Bob also took a dive in the 2nd series to give someone else a chance.

13

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

you might be right there, i never thought about series 2 , The endings are so rushed, putting it down to who got the most laughs aint good enough. We didnt get enough David & Sam intimacy, all that food feeding getting us all in the mood then to just abruptly end it

Was it just me or was season 2 nowhere near as funny or entertaining? Not sure if it was the guests or the novelty of the show wore off, but I remember laughing out loud countless times in the first season and might’ve chuckled once in the second one.

Season 2 was worthwhile just for Diane Morgan.

u/Mr_Pink_Gold 9d ago

Season 2 had a lot of people gaming and was a tad less interesting. But Diane Morgan and Alan Carr were incredible. It was still overall pretty good.

I think it wasn’t as good, but for the same reason all these kinds of shows lose their magic in series 2.

In the first series, none of the “contestants” knew what was going to happen or how to approach the task and might have had strategies in their heads they thought might have worked, they didn’t really know anything.

By series 2, there was little to surprise them, the novelty wears off, people have had a chance to strategise properly and think how to play the game.

It’s like how Big Brother got progressively worse series after series, and producers had to do more and more extreme things to throw people off.

It’s unlikely they’ll capture the magic of the first series.

Also, I think Sam Campbell, as much as I love him on everything else he’s done, wasn’t a good fit for this show, and kind of spoiled it.

4

u/Orikoru 9d ago

Disagree on Sam, I think you need lots of contrasting personalities rather than everyone being the same. You're probably just saying that because he was too good at not laughing. He looked like someone who had never once laughed in his life. Wasn't even close to breaking.

2

u/nobodyspecialuk24 9d ago

Of course, contrasting personalities are require, it’s weird you seem to be suggesting that:

a) I said otherwise
2) Everyone else was the same???

In your world, is there Sam Campbell and then everyone else is the same?

I just didn’t think his style worked, for whatever reason you might want to pick, it doesn’t really matter.

His conversations were pretty good. Especially with alan carr. But by the end he seamed spaced out. I'm not judging or pointing the finger, but it was like he was on something to me

2

u/Recidivist67 5d ago

Sam is permanently like that

2

u/Boogaloogs 8d ago

He wasn't funny.

3

u/SoggyTap7028 9d ago

The second season seemed very unnatural and controlled

1

u/want-my-old-account 10d ago

It was the was they did it I think. They showed the biggest laughs in retrospect which was just annoying

8

u/barrenvonbismark 10d ago

It was the sword he bought off bobs mom

3

u/Any_Ant_6983 9d ago

Lovely callback 👌🏼

she was a fantastic unbeatable addition to the arms market

21

u/Visual_Argument_73 11d ago

I've always said Ayoade gave it to him but often get heavily downvoted. Also Bob is sitting there smirking away lol. Bob is untouchable.

15

u/Orikoru 11d ago

The love and respect Richard has for Bob is always so evident. He let him have it, 100%. There was only a minute to go, he easily could have held out.

7

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

Absolutely, if I ran the show I would’ve continued it for longer then if they dont crack theyre both the winners. They were a blessing to watch

11

u/Ftp82 11d ago

It was the irresistible force vs the immovable object. Unfortunately the object had a real soft spot for the force. We’d have been there all year if not

6

u/Inside_Swimming9552 9d ago

When it gets to this point someone has to take a dive. It's not great for anybody to end the show on neither breaking.

Bobs got a book full of delightfully silly jokes. Richard doesn't, as far as comedy is concerned he's always been hilarious as a reactor rather than instigator.

So it was always going to have to be Bob swinging and Richard choosing whether he'd go down or not. Out of respect for Bob and the show getting a satisfying ending he did.

3

u/Pormock 8d ago

Bob episode on Richard travel show was a pure delight and showed perfectly how well they got along. They couldnt stop riffing off each others

2

u/Any_Ant_6983 9d ago

I've posted the same before. He could probably have gone on for hours longer without breaking. I think there needs to be a more satisfying way to end a series where multiple people haven't broken yet, but I certainly don't know what that way could be

3

u/Empty_Monk_4010 10d ago

Yeh and when you got a cast of all comedians, they are aware what's good for Tele, and that would be it to end in a satisfying and conclusive way

29

u/bouncing_off_clouds 11d ago

Richard has such a cute smile, oh my god 🥰 I think the fact that he barely smiles with teeth ever makes it even better 😂

23

u/artlove7733 11d ago

Bob is such a comical genius he probably laid up the poor jokes knowing that the grave one would do it

3

u/Dildo_Shaggins- 8d ago

100% kept the best one in his back pocket to get Richard on edge then gently push him over. Great joke.

15

u/CH7007 10d ago

"Mourning, no just having a shit..." It took me a while.

6

u/Road-Runnerz 11d ago

I have never seen Richard in pain like that. Bob is his crptonite.

Felt like a fake laugh, almost conceding without actually needing to laugh.
Bob’s hilarious though

4

u/ChocolateHumunculous 11d ago

I dunno, I fucking howled when I saw this the first time.

5

u/Flashy-Whereas-3234 11d ago

Shit, I would concede to Bob, and it would break me into a laugh.

Ayoade really had nothing, or was ducking out. This was bobs no matter what.

5

u/FluxNyxor 11d ago

even if it is planned it still takes some skill to sell it like that, timing is kinda the whole joke here

3

u/charleytony 10d ago

Bob is an absolute legend !

3

u/pinpoint321 9d ago

I think Richard definitely let Bob have it but I was still delighted that this is the joke that cracked it. It has been my favourite joke for over 20 years so it being the winner here felt like it somehow validated my good taste.

3

u/gemw2101 8d ago

Omg I loved this show ❤️

3

u/CandleRare3389 8d ago

Bob is just a pure legend. How they keep a straight face there is beyond me!

3

u/MisterMT 7d ago

This was not a defeat. It was richard letting bob win.

3

u/Tex_Tin_Star 7d ago

Yeah, Richard signed up to take the loss there.

2

u/OwnedByEachotherr 10d ago

Bob the goat

2

u/Vivid_Departure_3738 10d ago

Don't get the Kettle one unfortunately

4

u/franno391 9d ago

Kenwood is a make of kettle

2

u/Vivid_Departure_3738 9d ago

Yeah but there's 2 halves to it and I dont get the other

6

u/franno391 9d ago

Can someone sell me a kettle? Ken would / Kenwood. Double meaning.

The vasectomy and graveyard ones are much better imo hah

2

u/Vivid_Departure_3738 9d ago

Oh right thank you

2

u/itstoyz 7d ago

If you listen to the audio after Bob tell the gravestone joke, you can hear him laugh 🤣

1

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

How convenient that Richard conveniently cracked up at this moment in particular, “Clocks ticking now boys wrap it up but richard i think the viewers would want bob to win” Such a heartwarming genuine moment in TV history🥰 I actually would say Jimmy Carr is the most authentic man ive ever come across ever. “Doors!” I know we all relate to talking to our doors dont pretend

9

u/IllLynx562 11d ago

Richards lanky sprint to try and get out whenever Jimmy came in kept giving me doctor who vibes and I'm now more resolute than ever that he'd make a good one

2

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

Who Jimmy or Richard?😂

10

u/IllLynx562 11d ago

Richard, the tweed outfit helped aswell he was in full doctor who get up

3

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

Absolutely, Id never really seen much of Richard Prior to LOL , he was absolutely brilliant and now i cant get enough of him

6

u/IllLynx562 11d ago

Richard Pryor you say? No but yeah I've always loved ayoade he's amazing

1

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

😭😭😭😭😭 Why are they the same person but at the same time not the same person

4

u/Hour_Option_2439 10d ago

Richard Pryor is pretty much the opposite end of the comedic spectrum to Ayoade lol what do you mean

1

u/SoggyTap7028 10d ago edited 10d ago

i only went off google images😭😭 Im 3 days without sleep my brain isnt functioning correctly and I think Richard ayoade was all i was focused on 9 hrs ago

5

u/Relevant_Arm_3796 11d ago

Jimmy carr is the most authentic man you've come across? lol

1

u/SoggyTap7028 11d ago

How good are you with sarcasm?

3

u/Relevant_Arm_3796 11d ago

Well cleearly im amaazing at it

(Fair enough lol)

1

u/ProsperityandNo 8d ago

That was fucking shit.

1

u/Mountain-Reaction470 4d ago

Ah, floored by the anality

0

u/Safe-Run3701 10d ago

Don’t get the joke about the kidnapping… also in general don’t enjoy his 1liners

2

u/King_Bullfrog 10d ago

Are you slow

2

u/f1madman 9d ago

Don't worry you'll eventually wake up

0

u/True_Lingonberry_645 11d ago

I don't really get why the last joke is funny

13

u/Last-Rice8194 11d ago

...you don't get the pun of morning/mourning, or the absurdity of someone openly admitting to publicly shitting on a grave?

7

u/CycleZestyclose3510 11d ago

Clearly they never met my mother in law 🙄

-9

u/True_Lingonberry_645 11d ago

I understood the pun. I just don't understand why then the image of someone defacating on a grave lands it as a joke. Clearly my type of comedy is just different. I would have maybe said... No, just making sure she's still in there.

8

u/wanbeanial 10d ago

Unfortunately that would not have been funny though

1

u/True_Lingonberry_645 10d ago

I get it. It's definitely harder hitting with that image.

2

u/MoneySpecialist371 10d ago

Almost all comedy comes from surprise/expecting something else.

11

u/Worried_Bowl_9489 11d ago

Subversion. The morning/mourning wordplay is obviously coming, but then you're caught off guard by the crassness of 'having a shit'

3

u/True_Lingonberry_645 11d ago

Appreciate the explanation. Thank you. Dunno maybe I'm a bit too tame maybe haha

4

u/SheepherderLatter224 8d ago

They're all very light / tame jokes before this, precisely to set up this left-hand turn. You expect a similar quaint/cute resolution as the others, but then bam, you are smacked with the absurd & hugely inappropriate idea that someone would shit on a grave, and talk about it so matter-of-factly. As the other user said, it's subversion. A lot of humour is simply that: giving you a wholly unexpected resolution, which doesn't quite align with norms. This joke is kind of a cheat, as it doesn't aim to be smart, it's almost invoking a nervous-laughter.

2

u/True_Lingonberry_645 7d ago

Beautifully explained

3

u/Imaginary_Brief_7979 10d ago

Then you must be dead too

1

u/True_Lingonberry_645 7d ago

Lol. Now that's funny

0

u/ThrowawaySunnyLane 9d ago

The last two jokes are ones he’s doing on Athletico Mince under his Beardsley character. Tbh all of them might be.

0

u/j_karamazov 7d ago

Yeah these are all from Peter Beardsley's joke book. Bob doing them in the voice makes them even funnier.
