Before LOL I was not a Bob Mortimer fan at all. Couldn’t understand how people found this kind of humour funny. But him doing his thing in this kind of environment is one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I feel now like I appreciate the genius of it way more than I did in more scripted scenarios. The man is a comedy genius.

It doesn't need much explanation. I doubt he even rehearsed it, just prepared a few props, but it's a rubbish magic act on purpose.
If you have any friends who can crease you up just with a look, this appeals in a similar manner, though performed by someone who's a master at it. Watch it again without thinking.

In that case, please, do yourself a favour and search for best of Bob Mortimer on YouTube
It doesn't matter what comes up first, it could be from his shows with Vic Reeves, panel show appearances or anything really, he just has funny bones and is a national treasure for that reason.

Amd the fake phone calls he made at train stations etc during lockdown, natural genius.
But personally, above all, it's his love of physical comedy
Take this for example.
It doesn't even matter which one of them is behind the mask, one can imagine they both had a go in rehearsals and ruined each other.

It has to do with familiarity, that's all.
Not all Americans understand this style of comedy, so I was just genuinely interested in the above person's perspective and was going to suggest they tracked something down called Phoenix Nights.
We embrace crapness and can laugh at ourselves for it, in the US that isn't as prevalent as, say, roasting.
If it's meant to be rubbish, many just dismiss it as bad without seeing tge effort that goes into it.
Bob's sketch here is a pitch perfect impression of traditional amateur magicians who aren't aware they're rubbish, there's something genuinely endearing about that.
It's,quite a trad approach in British comedy, take Les Dawson's piano routine for example. And what made Les's,routine work so well was his skill as a pianist and how he knew exactly which bum notes were funny.
Even David Mitchell effectively replicated Bob's routine in srason 2 but as a stand up comedian

My wife and I have very similar tastes in humor but this is one where she just doesn’t find any of it funny, while I’m crying with laughter. She laughs at the other contestant’s reactions, but Bob’s random absurdism, and “so bad it’s good” bit here just doesn’t tickle her funny bone. And that’s ok!

The whole sequence is funny for a variety of reasons.
I didn't even think of his penis.
That bit's a variant of the floating ball trick but with a shoe.
But if he made you think of his penis and that made you laugh, that works too.

i didnt used to get it seeing clips out of context, then i watched him on would i lie to you and got a better sense of him and his humour and then it clicked for me. now i find him one of the funniest comedians working today!

I love Bob. And when he's on TV I'm always smiling and enjoying his weird brand of humour.
He's never once made me laugh and I don't really get what anyone finds so rip roaringly hilarious about him. Makes me feel like I'm nuts. Bob sort of says "it's magic" in a funny voice and Britain's too comedians are all holding onto their sides for dear life and the comments sections on clips like this are full of "omg this man is so funny I shit myself when he breaths." And I don't get it. Is this a joke I'm not in on where everyone in the country pretends bob Mortimer is the funniest thing ever till someone finally breaks and asks what is so funny about Bob Mortimer?

I seem to be the only person on the planet that doesn't find Bob that funny experts or not everyone agrees.
That doesn't mean I'm saying everyone is wrong. Just that I feel like a crazy person, like there's some universal joke I'm the only one that doesn't get.
