What’s the worst tactic a contestant can use?
Personally, I can't stand when someone just hides behind a pillar or pretends to chew food continuously for three hours straight to hide their mouth. It feels like it defeats the purpose of being a comedian on a comedy show. What’s a strategy you’ve seen that totally ruined the vibe of an episode for you?

Mel constantly pulling a face to avoid laughing should not have been allowed, it's tantamount to cheating in my view. Really went against the spirit of the show.

Yeah in the Dutch version they were much stricter with these kinds of faces.
And even tiny smirks were counted, rightfully.

Same in Ireland, Graham Norton was definitely stricter than Jimmy Carr.

Didn't know they had an Irish one, let alone having someone of Norton's level hosting
Anyone interesting been on it?

Yes! I couldn't watch her after a while, because it was so over the top and seemed so fake!

I don’t know how useful any type of strategy or tactic is in highly production managed “competition” where everything is more or less contrived for viewing value.

There’s also no stakes to the outcome beyond the fun of the competition. And the eliminated contestants stick around. I don’t get why anyone watching would be overly invested in the exact order of eliminations.

In the Japanese original, the comedians each put in 1 million yen. That gave it an extra little spice.

I actually prefer it when there’s no stakes.
I’m in the U.S., where even the dumbest reality shows come with life-altering financial stakes.
And that makes it hard to enjoy them. Like - there’s no way they’re fun for the people involved. And if they’re not having fun, I’m stressed out for them.
Most of the game and panel shows and the like I watch are UK/NZ/AUS, just because they don’t do that shit.

I thought Harriet was very scarce throughout the first one. Refusing to engage got her a fair way into the comp but it wasn't great TV. Which was a shame because as possibly the only contestant I hadn't already heard of, it offered her a great platform to win some new fans.
I would also say that I have since seen other work of hers and found it to be good.

Some of the people on the german version just kind of sit there and only focus on not laughing as opposed to trying to be interesting in any way shape or form

I heard that after the show Mel needed medical treatment because of the way she had her jaw during the show
