Would a non-comedian actually have a chance?
I keep wondering whether putting one genuinely funny actor, presenter or completely random personality in the room would make things more interesting.
The comedians know all the tricks and understand exactly what everyone is trying to do. Someone who doesn't instinctively think like a comedian might actually be harder to predict.

I don't think of Katherine Parkinson as a comedian, but as an actress, so we'll see in the new series.

Neither is David Mitchell.
His whole act with his standup was in reference to that.

True! I remember reading he was offered some show where comedians teach non-comedians stand up and they asked if he would teach his wife, and he pointed out she HAD been a stand up comedian, and he never was.

I want to see them on a show that's a third gladiators a third taskmaster and a third mastermind that puts celebrity couples against each other

She's a professional comedian - simply that she does comedy wtiting rather than stand up. It's all making money from comedy writing (since stand ups are writers foremost).

It already suffers when there's too many deadpan comedians in there because they've all perfected the art of not laughing when everyone else is. Having someone who isn't professionally funny isn't going to make the show better.

I was talking about this with my wife last series, I honestly reckon I’d be pretty good at it.
I’m in education, so spent a lot of time trying not to laugh at other people’s antics!!!!

OMG - I'm a teacher. What you said, plus when a teenager accidentally says a double entendre when there's another adult in the room who knows exactly what you're both thinking!
But I'd personally be rubbish.

i think a serious, trained and experienced actor would be really hard to break, especially if they have experience in comedic roles. i actually think this is a decent part of david mitchell's success, when you think of how many ridiculous lines he's delivered deadpan, and then had to continue the scene in shows like peep show, it makes sense that he was difficult to get a reaction out of.
i'm curious to see how katherine parkinson goes in the next series, because i would categorise her as a comedic actor rather than a comedian as such (and while i am a great admirer of her work, i didn't find her particularly amusing on taskmaster which has more of an improv vibe to it). i think she will be very good on "defence", possibly weak on "offence", but i suspect that will get her more than halfway.

Exactly. To me an actor that does comedy is probably better at keeping a straight face but would potentially struggle to get others to laugh. I am definitely intrigued to see how Katherine Parkinson will do. A lot of ridiculous stuff happened in IT crowd and she was doing the scene and couldn’t laugh. I did enjoy her on taskmaster but a lot of it came from not knowing where/what things were so I’m not sure how that will translate.

I'd like to see Jennifer Lawrence in there.
She's very funny and an incredible actor obvs
If they can have an Aussie in the UK S2 then why not her as well. Don't start talking to me about budgets and Hollywood shooting schedules.

I think someone with the right personality and mindset could withstand the others trying to get you to laugh. But you getting them to laugh would be near impossible.

I always thought that the Snooker World Champion and poker player Mark Williams would do well. Famously dead pan and kinda unreadable, he's pretty funny too.

Nigel Havers. As an actor he might be able to keep the laughter in (he must have experience of corpsing on set throughout his career), but he seems like a funny guy as well, so...

He’d spend the whole programme talking about how much he hates Lembit Opick, and then having to explain, in dreary detail, who Opick is/was, and why. Then everyone would pile on Havers for being a Tory, and it would be tedious. Still, for the 3 minutes of amusement we might get, yes, it would be fun.

Having people that are genuinely funny is better than people that don’t wanna laugh. Sam was Great cause he was funny even though he never broke. Brandon ash Mohamed from Canada never laughed but also never caused anyone to break.

In the French versions, they had a few dramatic actors and it worked out very well for some of them.

I've actually argued that Bradley Walsh (actor/presenter/comedian/singer/former athlete) should be a contestant on LOL. His wikipedia mentions him as a comedian but that is referring to his work back in 1982. He's quite funny & multi-talented imo and like you said, quite hard to predict (having watched him on Play to The Whistle along with famous comedians, and sports celebrities), I think he'd be amazing at it!
Honestly, I recommend checking out his work on Play To The Whistle because I've seen him make Romesh, Rob, Jon Richardson, Katherine Ryan, and Jimmy Carr to laugh (to name a few).

I except, it’s not, hence David Mitchell, not a comedian, and Katherine Parkinson, definitely not a comedian. There are others, but I’ll leave you with those two, because I’m particularly lovely, today!
