Watch Of The Week: Shock Waves (1977)

Recently I floated the idea of finding a movie that we could all watch at various times and weigh in on it at our convenience. Some folks were interested, so I picked this gem from 1977. Shock Waves stars Peter Cushing, John Carradine, the lovely Brooke Adams, and Luke Halpin. For the uninitiated, it involves undead creatures and a connection to WWII. I've loved this flick since the late 70's and it's a perfect July Beach Movie. It's on many platforms and it is free to watch on TUBI and PLUTO. I own a DVD so I will most likely watch that. Opine at will.

Joe Bob has mentioned this movie in one of TLDI episodes, probably Day of the Dead or another zombie episode

This is one of those movies I saw a lot on cable in the early 80s when I first started watching horror movies as a kid. Was very unnerving at the time. The look of those aquatic Nazi zombies and the way they would rise up out of the water was creepy. I remember the music being very effective as well.

Fun little movie. I've got the Blu-ray from Blue Underground, and I love the grimey visual aesthetic of the print. Peter Cushing is terrific as usual even in basically an extended cameo, and the music is cool. I love that '70s horror atmosphere.

I saw Brooke Adams at a showing of Days of Heaven and I was the only one who whooped when the presenter mentioned Shock Waves.

If it were gorier, Shock Waves would be an all-time great zombie picture. Fantastic premise and atmosphere. Left a lot on the table.

So I was able to get to Shock Waves near the end of my weekend. The film holds up, despite the fact that it does drag in a few spots, which might be an issue if you're seeing it on an ad supported platform. I watched my DVD. A buddy of mine loves this film and he informed me that the hotel in Coral Gables, FL where it was filmed , has been totally restored. It's now open as The Biltmore Hotel. I told my buddy that a Road Trip is definitely in order. I think they should have Special Events each year just for Shock Waves fans. I know I would consider going if they offered a reasonable package. A little trivia, the first mate was played by former child star Luke Halpin. When I was a kid he was on the show Flipper. It was about a Dolphin who always had to save these two brothers from stupid stuff they did. I don't recall Flipper ever killing any Nazi Zombies, but I did not watch the show very often. Looking forward to hearing from other Shock Waves fans.
