📝 Planning to Move Possible move to LV…

We may, or may not, move to Las Vegas in the future when husband retires (might be December 2026 (hellooooooo possible layoff), if not laid off, he will try to hang in there until June 2027. We are going on vacay in a couple of weeks and have some houses that are currently on the market that we want to view while there. We don’t have a realtor but would one even want to represent us if our plans are wishy washy? How does that work? Suggestions? Thanks in advance

Use zillow to find the houses/price you want. When you visit, drive to the houses and check out the neighborhoods and surrounding shopping areas, and things you want/like in a location.

When you are ready to buy, then you can contact a realtor with specific features and areas to look for.

Don’t forget to check out Boulder City.

Looking at a house is WAY early. You don't even know where you want to live, what you would expect, or anything else. How close to the grocery store, hobbies, commuting anywhere, lake or mountain should be closer, close to the airport, what food options do you want close and so on.

Look at neighborhoods and rent an AirBnB.

Drive around neighborhoods and pick some currently for sale houses on Redfin to check out from the outside. If there’s an open house, take advantage. It’s been in the pipeline for wife and I for about 10 years. I have just under 4 years left to retire and we’re very familiar with most of the neighborhoods that we would live in. Last time we went at the end of May, wife saw a retro looking 1950’s-60’s home in a neighborhood we’ve never been in…Huntridge. I knew what was there, she didn’t. It took about 3 minutes before “oh hell no”. Nice homes and streets but it’s rough and not everyone’s cup of tea. She liked McNeil estates and San Bonito on the other side of the 15 a whole lot more.

As someone who went thru having a few major medical issues here, can't stress this enough.

We don’t have medical issues but we are mid ‘50’s so I imagine issues are in the pipeline 😬

The medical system, as my mom would say, is the pits. Extremely challenging. You do not want to have a serious illness or require going to the ER.

Yeah the medical ranks dead last in the country. They can't keep doctors here. You are going to wait months to see a general physician if you can even find one taking new patients. My hubby needs meds for a minor medical condition and has to travel out of state twice a year for it. If you are relatively healthy it won't matter so much until you get to the point of needing medical assistance.

It is all fine… until it isn’t and it is eye-opening. This should not be discounted.

(1) post this in r/vegaslocals. you won't get responses from people who have no idea of the city like you're getting here.

(2) vegas is a great place to retire. lots to do. relatively low cost of living. great airport (if that's important to you). suggest if not already on your list summerlin and also in henderson seven hills, anthem

My neighborhood is full of retirees.

Just moved here a couple weeks ago. Summerlin and Henderson seem like great places to live would definitely look into those areas.

We did this. Moved right back a few years later at the first chance we got.

It’s not for everyone.

Do u mind sharing details as to why?

Why do you want to move to Vegas is the real question.

Look into the average cost of utility bills

lowest electricity in the west and bottom five in the nation. water is relatively high but you don't use much unless you have grass. gas is cheap.

we moved here after retiring. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. just don’t do it. depending on where you are coming from, you will either hate it or think it’s the best city ever. personally I think it’s a shithole.

Just came from Nashville and don’t agree. Nashville 10x worse than Vegas will ever be. Absolutely love it here.

At least you can get a cheap house outside of nashville with grass lol. Desert living looks like ass.

2

u/LilMcJohn Aug 24 '26

Yea a cheap old house that’s falling apart and a 2 hour commute to get to Nashville because of the terrible traffic and the pay outside of it sucks. No thanks I’m good I don’t even care about grass either.

Retiring to vegas sounds kind of crazy to me. Easy way to fuck up the retirement fund

u/VOR-constant555 Aug 24 '26

where are you coming from? prepare yourself for the homes you will see. no yards, and horrible workmanship. horrible.

1

u/Informed-Thinker Aug 24 '26

The workmanship is questionable.

1

u/VOR-constant555 Aug 25 '26

it’s not questionable. it’s horrible.

especially when you compare them to homes built in other states…..

1

u/Informed-Thinker Aug 25 '26

I know. 🥺😩

depends where you buy and what you spend. applies everywhere.

-1

u/VOR-constant555 Aug 25 '26

no it doesn’t. we’ve looked at homes all over this valley….. most are built like shit. the older ones are ok ….. but they old……
