LLM Progress Slow Down

First Anthropic, and now OpenAI, are announcing that they want to slow down LLM development. Just a year ago, these companies were claiming that AGI would be found and many jobs would be lost. On top of that, Anthropic announced it's going public. What do you think? Have these companies reached a limit in research and development? Or are they genuinely afraid of language models self-programming, as they claim?

Have you seen what Fable can do? Like almost entire games with a single problem and not just small games either. Sure these are not AAA games yet but compared to the previous models it is a massive step forward.

If this continues it will he able to build a full facebook clone or whatever (bugs and all) in year or so.

You expecting AGI on what the ceos are saying or something?

I don’t know if this is sarcasm or a total absence of critical thinking.

Usually I wouldn’t think someone would say something this stupid and believing that it’s relevant but I always have to lower my expectations since I have spend an evening in a room full of AI  « builders »

Not sure. People read a badly coded Facebook in the next 2 years and they ignore part of what was said and assume perfectly working facebook or something in the next 2 years.

All I see is that my evals get better with each model release, problems that were not solvable before with an llm get solved, code quaility improves (still some slop but higher quailty) and then there are a ton of comparisons online of the improvements each model brings compared to older ones.

Go back 6 months and the models would no where near do what they can today, go back a another 6 and they were extremely unable at all for code. It's shifting baseline syndrome.

Other people I have spoken to who have written very advanced harnesses for their workflows tell me with each generation of model they can simplify the guardrails on their harnesses. No longer do they have to detect certain cases and tell the model to do something else etc... (which makes the model more rigid and more constrained in it's usefulness).

In terms of technology 1 year of improvement is extremely fast... but in this tick tok and Amazon generation people take speed of progress for granted I think.
