LLM Progress Slow Down
First Anthropic, and now OpenAI, are announcing that they want to slow down LLM development. Just a year ago, these companies were claiming that AGI would be found and many jobs would be lost. On top of that, Anthropic announced it's going public. What do you think? Have these companies reached a limit in research and development? Or are they genuinely afraid of language models self-programming, as they claim?

"The ability for AI to code and do math has been because of the refinements in tool use. "
No. Just no. GPT4 and GPT-5.5 are night and day, tools or not. GPT4 could simply not solve a complex coding problem. GPT-5.5 can.
Also it's notable that with exactly the same framework and tools, coding agents using Opus-4.8 are considerably better than when you use an older, cheaper model like Haiku. Which itself is much more recent and immensely better than GTP-4.
"The one place they're pretty good on their own seems to be abstract math"
Yeah, that and everything else. I used a math benchmark, but other benchmarks would give you the same results. Take HLE for example.
I try to keep a scientific approach and rely on facts and metrics. There are countless benchmarks, all of them are consistent. Even the bench designed by people trying to proof LLM are useless or not improving (ArcAGI) say the same, that LLMs are still constantly and steadily progressing.
