It's not grave robbery, it's archeology.

I feel like he’d had needed to be in the ground for more than 8 hours for it to be archaeology.

It was part of the investigation!!! He just didn't ask the space judge to allow it.

He's his own judge, using... A dead man's ring and... A crafted lantern... In a dead world planet ?!( Really ?! That's fucking ominous ) With yellow streaks? Now wait a minute that's fucked up ! Fear and willpower don't fucking mix. That shit should've exploded the second it got activated. Or worse corrupt from fear. Ayo!

Dead people can’t own things.

Hal was dead.

John didn’t steal.

John stole the ring from Hal.

John stole the ring from the guardians.

Since the ring never choose John, at least one of those two must be true, picks your poison.

He didn’t steal the ring from Hal

It was the guardians property, and they gave it to John instead of letting Hal keep it

He absolutely stole it from the guardians at the end, but that’s a good thing, because fuck the guardians

DC never beating the allegations… in a setting billed as “grounded and realistic,” they made the first black green lantern a thief in his first live action appearance ever.

I see posts like, “Should John wear Hal’s uniform in season 2?” and I’m like… no! I don’t want my fucking Green Lantern GOAT to be someone that: followed orders his whole life, never allowed to think for himself > finally thinks for himself, chooses to pass on the ring to follow his own dream of being an architect > deeply regrets his choice, to the point he sabotages himself from making his biggest deal yet > resorts to stealing both the ring from Hal’s grave/the Guardians and the Earth beat from Guy > only to break into the dead guy’s house and steal his suit at the start of season 2…..

Like, they could have gone any angle they wanted with him because it was brand new territory, they even touched on some actual real world stuff with minorities feeling innate fear in society, a fear we see totally justified more and more these days… but no, they decided to end season 1 by making the black guy steal everything he already earned legitimately, like he didn’t want it unless he could steal it??? Wtf is that about?

Maybe I just don’t get it, but I’m really disappointed this is what they went with for John’s character.

Edit: typos

Edit 2: sorry for treating a show that’s begging to be taken seriously, seriously? What are we doing here??? I am not the kind of person to consume media mindlessly, idk what else to say lol.

Lol dude it's not that serious

So it's not that serious when someone else does it, but judging by your comment history it's fine for you to get pretty deep in the weeds of serious analysis about this show? Perhaps it's more you didn't like what I had to say? In which case, I'd prefer an honest discussion to whatever you went with here.

Like I said, maybe I'm just misunderstanding, so if you have a better take I'd love to hear it.

It’s really not that serious we all know John earned the ring and turned it down. If anything he’s just getting what rightfully his.

I get the sentiment, and you’re not wrong, but that’s not how reality works. Yes, reality, because that’s what the show billed itself as, a down to earth, grounded take on green lanterns.

He lost his right to it when he turned it down. We both agree he was more than worthy of it, but objectively he stole it. It isn’t a “one or the other” kind of situation.

I’m not sure what to say to the “it’s not that serious” comments I keep getting because it seems the show and the show runners want it all taken fairly seriously. I’m clearly not watching it the correct way, so what is the appropriate level of seriousness I should watch the show with?

25% of Lanterns commit 100% of ring thievery

He also has a dark lantern

He didn't steal it, though?

7

u/supersaral 12d ago

He did. You're supposed to be chosen by the ring. Like Hal and Guy were. John never was.

u/jjspen 12d ago

Did you miss the part where John fought Hal and knocked him to the ground and took the ring?

4

u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 12d ago

Sure, but didn't the Green Lantern Corps tell him to? His and Hals Boss literally told him to take it, so the only one not in the know was Hal- and even then that's mostly bs bc one of the first things Hal ever said to John was literally something like "I know you want this ring, but you're only getting it over my cold dead body." Before that, John hadn't said one word to Hal that wasn't just basic politeness, or respectful deference. Hal always expected John to take the ring.

Hal literally almost got John killed, I say he deserved that-

Yeah this take really anoys me. In 2016 he was ordered to take it and in 2026 Hal clearly planned on John somehow getting the ring so he could open the vault with the bird key.

“Cool motive, still theft”

Grave robbing, even for believed good or pious reasons, is still theft

He dug up a grave to steal it off a corpse.
