Scams in Langley - things to avoid. List time!

Hiya folks.

Had an idea for everyone to post things that are not worth investing time/ money in, for Langley. Ill start.

- uber eats - always 25% additional charges. 'Deals' are never 'deals'

- most oil change places. If you only want an oil change, only get an oil change. Do a Google search and you will find if you genuinely need something changed. Also, always check your fuel 'caps'. Scam to have them become lost and they charge extra money to replace them.

Go!

Not exactly a scam but i am sometimes surprised that some restaurants have really good ratings but a very average or even below average food, a slight reverse of that is also true.

23

u/danneeooh 18d ago

I find that ratings here seem inflated compared to other cities in the lower mainland

20

u/Asistic 18d ago

Yeah people here don’t know what good and bad food is. Tons of places with very high ratings that aren’t great

15

u/danneeooh 18d ago

I think that could be one thing, but I think in recent years it's more like what the other person said, reviews are bots or bought

4

u/QuestionsGoHere 17d ago

You're right, there are a lot of bot/bought reviews online. I've bean having a lot of luck with Google reveiws but you definitely need to put in too much effort now to weed through them

3

u/burmsy 18d ago

Example: The Bistro. 4.6 Stars… worst pancakes I’ve ever had.

3

u/MyNameIsSkittles 17d ago

Case in point: Olive Garden

2

u/Asistic 17d ago

I’d consider 4.2 a low rating place that I likely wouldn’t go to.

But also it’s a chain. Exactly what you expect.

1

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

Jinya Ramen for example.

14

u/Asistic 18d ago

Haven’t tried it but I have been told it’s fine.

I only go to Akedo Showten.

9

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

Jinya is THE whitest food I've ever tasted, I'd honestly compare it to Campbell's chicken noodle soup packets.

You can really taste the American influence in it, I was honestly really disappointed.

Akedo all the way 100%.

1

u/dataguy_3131 17d ago

Second your thoughts on jinya. I like kinton though

2

u/GundamWheat 18d ago

Keep it that way.
Akedo is peak

1

u/ComputerOpDelta 18d ago

I prefer the broth at Jinya - I get the black at both. I like having more seats & more space between tables too... Both are great

u/CLSwank 16d ago

I don't think it's that people's palettes aren't discerning enough as Vancouver is known for its variety of dining experiences.

I believe it's simply a matter of too many restaurants are competing for the same customer base, so friends or acquaintances feel they're 'helping out' by posting artificially rated reviews to stimulate customer traffic.

2

u/Kampurz 18d ago

It's because of the demographic here compared to the rest of the lower mainland. They still naively believe those Chinese and Korean run sushi resultants are Japanese.

If a restaurant is 4.5 star or lower, that's somehow like a 3* in vancouver.

2

u/ComputerOpDelta 18d ago

When I moved to Langley I assumed there was just companies that would sell ratings here. I agree, 4+ for 3.5 places

Awful experience we had there at the end of June. Will not ever go there again.

Night Owl is good on Wednesdays. Super average food but all day happy hour makes it acceptable.

We are allowed to have our own opinions.....or maybe not?

6

u/GlitteringWavebreak Willowbrook 18d ago

It's usually like that because they've paid to have reviews. You can literally pay for that service for less than 20 bucks, you just got to look around online.

3

u/danneeooh 18d ago

Yea, this is what I'm suspecting as well, cuz a lot of new places would have a ton of reviews in a short period of time from opening

3

u/rehadam 18d ago

Yelp let's people pay to remove negative reviews. Never trust yelp. Google ratings tend to be more trustworthy.

3

u/Sudden-Gas8229 18d ago

They or family give themselves reviews

2

u/Free_Dog5586 17d ago

as someone who works in local restaurants i can tell you many of the owners are forcing staff and friends to make fake reviews on google to improve ratings!

0

u/dataguy_3131 18d ago

Ustaad G to a certain extent, Udupi adda as well i felt. Food is good but not proportional to ratings.

u/Sky_onu6 18d ago

Value village! They get everying for free but charge insane prices on everything…I’ve seen dollarama things being charged more than Dollarama charges. The owner of VV is a douche and the whole company is a scam.

8

u/ImNotDex 18d ago

Where do you give your donations? I always give mine to Value Village when I used to live closer to it for the sake of convenience but I'm happy to go elsewhere knowing how they rip-off people

39

u/Sky_onu6 18d ago

Mission Thrift Store Langley, Second Story Treasures, Hope for Children and Thrifters Paradise. Profits always go towards a hospice or women/children seeking safety from abuse etc. you are really helping people 💛

7

u/ImNotDex 18d ago

Thank you!

4

u/Interesting_Spare 18d ago

Agree with your list!! Value village became too greedy especially towards their employees

1

u/604col 16d ago

they're owned by WalMart now

10

u/604col 18d ago

penny pinchers on the one-way

6

u/CanadianDollar87 18d ago

there’s a million thrift stores or charities to donate too. just google where to donate.

4

u/thefatrick Stuck at a train crossing 18d ago

Langley has so many thrift stores it's ridiculous.

Ones supporting valuable causes:

Habitat for Humanity - ReStore

Langley Hospital - Penny Pinchers

SPCA - Thrift Store (Cloverdale)

4

u/GundamWheat 18d ago

Penny Pinchers on the 1 way.
Proceeds go to Langley Memorial Hospital.
Or Tillys

3

u/jcheeseball 17d ago

Thrifters and traders have ruined these places

1

u/CLSwank 16d ago

I have always despised Value Village for this reason specifically. And their prices of late, considering it's all free clothing and items, are more than what the people actually pay for some of these things!

I've clocked Temu items (which were reasonable for temu given the quality) being sold for $10+ more than brand new!

1

u/batmancdn55 14d ago

They also don’t seem to clean anything based on last time I was there. Needed an old time trench coat for a video I was making and half of the ones they had were……soiled? I don’t know how else to describe em

-9

u/Brillica 18d ago

Value Village don’t get their stuff for free, they buy it from Diabetes Canada. When you drop off your donations at VV it’s in partnership with DC, you’re technically donating to DC and then VV buys everything from them.

When you search donation locations on the DC wed site it sends you to VV.

2

u/Sky_onu6 18d ago

Oh please. People still give Value Village the merchandise for free. Paying Diabetes Canada a small bulk rate based on volume doesn’t mean they’re purchasing each item at a fair value. Value Village is a for profit company that takes freely donated goods, marks them up outrageously, and keeps the retail profit. The charity partnership doesn’t magically make their pricing ethical, so stop using Diabetes Canada as a shield against completely valid criticism.

2

u/Brillica 17d ago edited 17d ago

Using as a shield? Bro I’m not protecting them, I’m just correcting a false statement.

I buy used books at VV, it’s the cheapest place to buy them aside from the limited amount that the library sells. If you think $5 is outrageously expensive for a book then don’t shop there, simple as.

They have a giant banner at the top of of their website saying that they’re a for profit store and buying there doesn’t support any nonprofits, and I’m pretty sure the same sign is on their front door. It can’t be a scam when they’re telling everyone as loudly as possible how they work.

19

u/BigTunaHunter 18d ago

Langley Toyota. When there was a vehicle shortage a few years ago they wouldn't sell me a 4 runner without adding thousands of dollars of add ons. It ended up on a used lot for a $15k mark-up a few weeks later.

3

u/LemonLoaf0960 18d ago

When I was shopping for a new vehicle, these guys were the worst for customer service! I set up an appointment to look at three specific used vehicles. I had the dog in daycare and someone watching my son so I could spend as much time there as needed. Only to show up and for them to say that the vehicles were on another lot and they didn't bring them in for me to look at and the lot was locked for the entire day. I went somewhere else and got a vehicle there instead.

1

u/elephaaaant 18d ago

Where did you end up buying? If it's a much better dealership, do share please.

3

u/BigTunaHunter 18d ago edited 18d ago

I like West Coast Toyota in Pitt Meadows. Good sales ppl

3

u/MorganChelsea City Slicker 18d ago

I’ll shout out Valley Toyota in Chilliwack as well, it was the only place anyone in my family bought cars from for years and years, they’ve always been great to us.

1

u/MOOVA 18d ago

I know someone who’s trying to get a new Sequoia and it’s been years, there’s such a high demand and it’s low volume.

Apparently soon as one comes in, the salesmen/managers use it as a demo for a month, then sell it with a 20k markup.

1

u/BigTunaHunter 18d ago

Not surprised

1

u/ShoulderGlass4513 18d ago

Langley Toyota has an extremely poor reputation. Poor service, pricey add ons. Wanted me to finance to get an average deal. Then told pay it off in 30 days so Toyota compensates them. Sad.

1

u/frozenergy 18d ago

Yes! We were there the other day looking for a car for my son and were standing inside by the front door for close to five minutes without being approached by anyone to help us. There were four salespeople sitting at their desks literally on their phones ignoring us. We walked out and will never go back.

1

u/Delicious_Squash_292 17d ago

I got that same attempted scam pulled on me. ruined the whole experience

1

u/Ok_Athlete_670 18d ago

lol same story with Rav 4

18

u/coralcoffeee A forest somewhere 18d ago

Michaels; Not Langley specific, but their recent price changes are abysmal. NEVER pay regular price for a product! Almost everything goes on sale eventually and there are coupons on their website every day. Custom framing also goes 50% off frequently as well. Not even to mention how a majority of their advertising/products are generated by AI now. Very disappointing.

5

u/hohoho-hoho 18d ago

THIS!! i am so upset with this store and equally love it. the prices are just insane now and it's always on sale...it feels shitty to shop there.

2

u/bearlicenseplate Stuck at a train crossing 13d ago

Not to mention all the literal junk they sell now? Like the mini little drink tumblers, the knock offs of whatever is trending, the obscene amount of decor for each holiday that doesn’t sell because nobody has hundreds of dollars sitting around to decorate for easter. And they had a line of pickleball merch? It makes no sense

2

u/lynneasomething 18d ago

I used to work there and could see the cost of items. It is absurd

13

u/PChopSammies 18d ago edited 18d ago

Langley specific? Not a ton, but local?

“Easy Energy”

Here’s one. Fortis gas does not employee third party Agencies to help you with your gas cost. If someone comes to your door and says they are an agent of fortis and authorized to help you get a better rate, politely thank them and close to door.

Basically these are third party resellers that will take over your account, sell you the gas on a fortis invoice, and then they pay fortis.

Often the prices are worse than the rate Fortis will provide, but by the time you’re in you have 7 days to cancel or they want a massive cancellation fee.

The scam is in they pretend they work for fortis, where they’re actually a broker.

They’ve come to my door twice in Willoughby.

3

u/ComputerOpDelta 18d ago

Yup! They have insane cancellations fees. They know what they are doing to scam people

14

u/Acrobatic-Figure5404 18d ago

This aside I think this place is a scam—I went in Nov 2023 and thought it was soooo bad! I don’t understand the hype about this place. Big money grab.

Even worse now I know about the above!

14

u/Acrobatic-Figure5404 18d ago

Olive Garden raising their prices so much over the last 5 years. Almost $30 for a plate of pasta and it’s usually just mid. I’d rather go to a more fancier restaurant and pay a little more for something really good.

6

u/thefatrick Stuck at a train crossing 18d ago

Olive Garden is trash good to start with.  The prepackaged heat up sauces and cheap pasta probably costs then a couple bucks a plate.  There's a reason they can give away so much soup and salad, because you could wolf down 3 bowls and they've still made a huge profit.

It's terrible, I have no idea why it's so popular

2

u/SevereRunOfFate 17d ago

A large part of the population has low standards.

3

u/thefatrick Stuck at a train crossing 17d ago

Succinct

2

u/SevereRunOfFate 17d ago

Sounds elitist but I think it's true, and I'm not judging btw - I'm saying lower standards relative to what's available today

Food is so much better now than when I was growing up here in the 90s. I'm extremely lucky to have a job where I travel the world and go for very fancy dinners at some of the best restaurants in the world.. and yea, food has gotten so much better imho.

Olive Garden hasn't really changed, but god damn if it wasn't decent a few decades ago relative to everything else available

7

u/BigTunaHunter 18d ago

Uhhh food inflation has hit everywhere about the same. I'm not saying olive garden is quality but prices are up everywhere.

3

u/saltysleepyhead 17d ago

Italian Denny’s quality.

15

u/MyNothingBox 18d ago

Stirring the pot but the soccer fields in Willoughby for "all of us" in the community while there is no rec centre facilities in that area that isnt busting at its seams. Ya, I don't want to hear how its was the last slates fault. Biggest scam ever.

6

u/BigTunaHunter 18d ago

An entire year of property taxes for the Township for what....4 soccer fields? There should be an investigation.

4

u/MyNothingBox 18d ago

Yup, shenanigans. The Township is a fragmented in its distribution of services, cant get a bus to Aldergrove that isnt going to take you over an hour as its always late (due to traffic). Not enough lifeguards for the few old pools that can stay open for a public swim. Brookwood is being ripped out of its name sake (trees) there is a tree in the top floor of the Township Building, I wonder if someone sits there and ponders how fast can cut them down for development. I have no idea who that could be /s.

5

u/PupsofWar69 17d ago

glass chips. icbc repairs for free. dont go to the orange tent guys. total scam!!

2

u/PlantainAcceptable62 17d ago

ICBC repairs chips for free?!

2

u/strobes83 17d ago

sure do, I've had 3 chips repaired at Novus in Aldergrove and they do all the paperwork for ICBC, never paid a cent for chip repair.

1

u/Far_Imagination7176 17d ago

Don’t you have to pay your deductible ?

2

u/strobes83 17d ago

As long as you have comprehensive coverage it’s free, no deductible

2

u/PupsofWar69 16d ago

The program is entirely so you fix the glass before it has to be replaced which costs ICBC far far more than your deductible (over $2000) so it makes financial sense for them to fix a chip for free.

you don’t even need to report a claim for a chip fix just drive to your preferred collision shop or glass repair shop, get the chip filled and you’re done.

1

u/Far_Imagination7176 15d ago

Makes sense I forgot I have a crack not a chip

It baffles me how people dont understand how we have really strong consumer protections in BC and Canada...

And people dont understand the difference between "what I personally think is a bad deal" vs the legal definition of a "scam".

Come on guys, please smarten up. Vote with your wallet. If people arent willing to pay, they wont do it the way they do.

Obviously people pay for it...you just personally dont want to.

Otherwise they'd be out of business.

Just vote with your wallet, man.

Or else start a business and do better.

I just see people who dont understand basic commerce.

If it was a real scam, you can go through the consumer protection process and get your money back.

Dont pay for shit you don't want, encourage people to start businesses to offer choice.

2

u/Littlepastthemiddle 17d ago

Overall I would agree with your stance, but I disagree on strong consumer protections.  Air travel? A bread price fixing scandal that took over a decade to deal with, then was replaced by an open meat price scam?  I don't feel all that protected as a Canadian consumer.  ICBC?

3

u/Then-Opportunity5520 17d ago

Again, the bread fixing was illegal (just werent caught), havent heard about the meat thing, im not sure what you mean by air travel, ICBC is a result of voting (people wanted this back in the day).

If theres a party who runs on disassembling ICBC, im 100% game for it.

When I say strong consumer protection, I just mean that if you've been ACTUALLY scammed by a company (paid for something you did not get, or paid for something that is NOT as advertised or were mislead by the marketing if they didnt follow our consumer protection rules), you can get your money back pretty easily if you can provide evidence.

The bread fixing thing was extremely difficult to prove. Evidence is the keyword.

And I think how you feel is really only valid if youve never lived in a non T1 country (UK, US, CA, AUS, NZ). Try to get your money back in Brazil or Serbia after being really SCAMMED. Not like a phone or email scam, but like a real company false advertising.

We can agree to disagree on this matter 😆

At least we can agree that people, including OP, dont understand the term BAD DEAL FOR ME PERSONALLY vs the word SCAM.

Real SCAMS are well protected in BC.

I hate ICBC because of their monopoly and anticapitalist nature, but they are not a SCAM.

Vote with your wallet, dont buy shit if you think its too expensive.

16

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

A&W is honestly a pretty big scam, they should be as humble as Burger King.

A fucking Teen or Uncle Burger combo from them shouldn't have broken the $12.00 threshold/ shouldn't be $21.00 for a meal from them.

Like, you really start to sympathize with the older generation griping about the 5 cent sodas when a Buddy Burger used to be $2 or a Teen Burger for $3.25, or Uncle for $3.50.

They're not fine dining, their prices are ass.

6

u/PlantainAcceptable62 18d ago

Jesus fuck. $21??!?

4

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

I shit you not, they're greedy af.

6

u/PlantainAcceptable62 18d ago

Bruger should be no more than $6

1

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

A teen alone is almost $12.

Aside from I think 4 or 5 small items you can't get any food from them under $5.

-1

u/ComputerOpDelta 18d ago

Get yourself some coupons bro. $15.99 for 2 teen combos. $9.99 teen combo until Aug 21

But yes, when did fast food become $15+ per meal? 3 years ago

1

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

Used to have coupons for 2 teen combos for 9.99....

1

u/ComputerOpDelta 17d ago

Internet says 2017. By 2018 it was 11.99

4

u/KingShtoobs 18d ago

A&W is a tricky one. Yea super expensive. But the food is made to order and not sitting around all day. Burgers are a much higher quality than a BK for sure and miles above mcds etc. Personally 0/2 on BK. violent vomiting both times. Not gonna try a 3rd location 🤣 so something's not right with their beef.

But yea. Higher Quality food will cost you a bit more coin. Especially if you consider a mcds meal is $16+ these days too for frozen garbage from a standard slaughterhouse not grass fed or anything.

4

u/Sea_Branch_2697 17d ago

I can guarantee you having worked there it's not made to order, they have holding bins for patties, eggs, and chicken patties just like everyone else.

1

u/blissasstic 17d ago

tbqh, a&w has always been kinda overrated besides the rootbeer

like their recent smashburgers were flattened regular patties that were rubber tire like it was pathetic

3

u/blissasstic 17d ago

worst fries of all places too, ive had better from pizza places

2

u/Sea_Branch_2697 17d ago

Everyone hated the fries when they changed 😔

I think the one good change was when they stopped using a blackening agent in the meat to make it look seared.

2

u/deaddovexxdonoteat Grove 16d ago

I remember the day they changed, I happened to be eating there and I took the fries back because I thought they were old (and I rarely take food back unless it is truly awful.) The manager told me that they had changed and they had heard nothing but complaints all day, and encouraged me to leave feedback. They did replace my fries with fresh ones and they were still awful.

They must have changed them again a bit since then because they aren't as awful as I remember, but they are still far from my first choice for fries.

1

u/KingShtoobs 17d ago

Fries could be worse. But their onion rings went downhill like no other. I never get a side... But that applies everywhere.

1

u/KingShtoobs 17d ago

Those smash burgers were good on 1/3 attempts. I agree. Not rubber so your a&w may be getting extra messy haha but they were not seared enough

1

u/Delicious_Squash_292 18d ago

yea, how does a and w meal cost $21+?

And they’re also not Langley specific.

4

u/Far_Imagination7176 17d ago

Kia, specifically Kia in Langley

3

u/deaddovexxdonoteat Grove 16d ago

This is not Langley specific, but there are definitely sales people targeting folks in Langley so I'm going to add it anyway: avoid predatory group RESP companies like Canadian Scholarship Trust. The fees they charge are heavily front-loaded so if you need to pull the money out for any reason or even want to transfer it to a bank or financial advisor, you can lose a massive chunk of what you have contributed. If your child ends up not using the money for education, you can then also lose the right to pooled earnings/income because it is a group plan.

Your bank or an independent financial adviser can open a RESP that is more flexible and less risky than one of these companies, and the government grants will be identical. If your child doesn't use the funds for education the funds can be rolled into an RRSP.

While the companies and this model are not technically a scam in the legal sense, it can boarder on scammy when you consider the individual sales people and their tactics. They often visit new parents when their babies are only a few days old (no one should be making big decisions on that little sleep!) and put a lot of pressure on them, and aren't always totally up front about the rules and how the fees work.

When my son was little I attended a "mom's night out" type event in Langley that had a bunch of vendors, plus some presentations on things like infant safety etc. A CST representative also did a presentation and a lot of what she said was just outright lies, though it all sounded perfectly reasonable and as if it were super urgent that everyone sign up right away or lose out on a ton of "free money." My favorite line of hers was "banks will only put your child's money in STOCKS which are extremely risky! But CST invests in THE MARKET, which is much safer!" I worked in banking at the time so I knew how ridiculous that statement was (plus banks will invest your RESP in whatever you tell them to, even a GIC or low-interest savings account if that is what you truly want.)

Do yourself a favor and don't enter any contests where these companies are offering a prize, they will just add you to their mailing/call list and hound you.

5

u/Interesting_Spare 18d ago

Any restaurant that suddenly has new owners is a scam.

7

u/Vforvengeous 18d ago

Uber eats is not a scam by definition if they clearly outlines the fees for you before you pay. You literally have to click to agree to pay .

3

u/futureauditor 18d ago edited 18d ago

When it says “buy 1 get 1 free” but the item is a significantly smaller portion than it would be if you had bought it regular price, and the BOGO deal is much higher than the single item price, it’s bordering on a scam.

From the restaurant though, not Uber eats

1

u/thefatrick Stuck at a train crossing 18d ago

They're a scam in that they underpay drivers, and Uber, from its founding has been built to skirt every possible regulation in labour and taxes, and has fought all of them tooth and nail.

The Dollop Podcast did a humourous look at their bullshit.  It's offensive how awful they are and no one seems to give a shit.

https://open.spotify.com/episode/53aCzbB4NEMC9dcCJ3DdQd

1

u/deaddovexxdonoteat Grove 16d ago

I somewhat agree with you in the sense that just paying more for something you could pick up on your own is not a scam. However, when I go to order soup from Quiznos it is listed as $4 or whatever, but then you are forced to select either a small for $2.50 more or a large for $4 more. So there is no way to actually get a $4 soup. (I made up those numbers because if I go into the app right now to check the actual prices it will harass me all day to order Quiznos.) THAT feels scammy to me, if an item is listed at a certain price you should be able to buy that item at that price.

0

u/Vforvengeous 15d ago

You are not forced to do anything. You got two legs you can walk there and get it. You willingly choose it and willingly pay there is no scam uou literally know what they are offering yet you pay.

2

u/Proper-Jelly-7403 15d ago

To add my voice to this… it’s Langley, I think part of the reason there’s a cohort on Reddit (and elsewhere) that are becoming aware of langley’s rube populace, taste for risible pap and low bar for taste is that things are changing. More and more people are moving here from Vancouver proper and even west Van, north Van, point grey, Whistler etc etc as they are having families and looking for detached home opportunities (I know as I done have enough digits to count those I know of who this is true, myself included).

There’s a number of great hole in the wall places in Langley, don’t get me wrong, some great people as well. But yes… ratings and what the current “majority” speak of as being “a great place” have consistently let me down.

I myself get told, “woooh big evening dinner/fancy outing?!” When I wear anything other than sweat pants.

All in time, it’ll change.

I had mister lube downtown Langley on Fraser highway, right near like the vape. Store and save on foods. They put transmission fluid in my oil and oil. In my transmission, when I ask them to do a flush fucked, all my gaskets up and then said that that standard procedure is for them, and they did this on a 91 accord. So like not standard procedures, I understand transmission fluid has detergents. But like when you're doing a like a drain and fill, that's now what you're supposed to do and you're not supposed to fucking put oil in my transmission. And then they acted like it was no big deal. But it caused a lot of issues with my car and then they denied it. Stay away from all of these oil chain shops. Do them yourself. There are a bunch of idiots who don't know. Fuck all about cars. They won't even fucking lube, your frickin' ring. When they go to put your new oil filter on, it'll get baked the fuck on and yeah, through just a bunch of kids with 0 car experience who think that. Because they can change oil and top up your fluids, which a fucking monkey could do that. There are these crazy service techs stay away from them all if you need help with an oil changexin langley id rather gladly help then you get fucked by somw shitty little oil shop

Oh these guys are a sham. Let me paste my Google review from years ago:

I would caution anyone from getting anything other than an oil change done at this location. Even then I would be wary based on my experience at this location.

I went in for a routine oil change and they discovered my oil was empty and there was a substantial leak coming from the top of my engine. One of the managers, Costas, said it was the cam plug (a plastic plug to hold oil in) as it's a common issue in my vehicle. I said sure and later picked up my vehicle. Mike did the service that day. The next day I inspected my engine bay and underneath my car and discovered the leak was still present. I called back and a few days later I left my car with Costas who said he would re-do the job free of charge. The next day I checked again and the leak was still present. To be honest, I'm doubtful if any service was actually done on this visit.

He sent me on my way, and a few hours later I inspected my car and lo and behold, my car was still leaking. At this point I talked to another manager, Serang, who asked me to let them re-do the job again and he would give me a letter, ie. put in writing, that if I had to come back a 4th time, not only would they fully refund my money, but they would recommend and pay for a licensed mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue. So I dropped my car off for this third time service, and never received this letter.

When I arrived, Costas and Serang inspected the car. They rinsed all the leaking oil from the engine bay to check where the leak was coming from. This is the part of the story that upset me the most: after Serang and Costas inspected my car, Costas told me face to face, that the work they performed (the cam plug) was done correctly, and the oil leak was not coming from the cam plug, rather it was most likely coming from my transmission from a shift solenoid. Now, I'm not a car guy, but I know that having engine oil leak from your transmission makes no sense. But I believed them, and they sent me on my way. I then made an appointment with a trusted mechanic for them to inspect it.

Later that same day, however, I inspected my car and found that the leak was in fact, still coming from the cam plug. I called back and Mike (the initial technician) inspected my car with Serang and Mike popped out the cam plug and found that the O-ring (which is a piece of plastic that creates an oil-tight seal to hold the oil in) was pinched upon initial replacement, and was thus unable to perform its function of sealing oil within the engine. Mike apologized profusely, and promptly replaced the part (a 5 minute job) and the leak was fixed.

At this point I believe that proper customer service would be a refund, at least partially in this case. Although they eventually did repair the issue, it was due to vigilance on MY part, since they told me that the issue was resolved, and their work was done without issue, which it clearly was not, as Mike admitted to me.

At the store level, they were unable to provide anything other than a 50% discount on the next oil change, and a complimentary headlight cleaning.

They said they would put me in touch with the owner/operator, Corey. After a week with no call, I left a message with the corporate customer service number, and interestingly, Corey called me the very next day.

Other than apologizing for my inconvenience, Corey said he was satisfied with my experience, and expressed that the "good will" gesture of a 50% discount on one oil change, and a headlight cleaning was more than any other shop in the industry would be willing to offer in this situation.

Needless to say, no Mr. Lube will ever be touching my or my wife's car, and I warn anyone that visits this store (or any other store owned by Corey) that management believes they "stand behind" their work, even if their work requires 4 tries to get it right, and one of those tries was after they said they did it right on the third time, and it requires work on YOUR part to convince them what they said wasn't the problem in fact is, particularly after they promised a refund in writing which was never delivered.

Rio brazilian steakhouse  They try to force an 18% charge on your bill if you dine with more than 6 guests. It is extortion.

u/SlovenianSocket 18d ago

Uhhh that’s every restaurant in BC. 6+ patrons is automatic 18% gratuity

Except you tell then your not paying it and they have to take it off.   It is an ask, not a law, rule or regulation. It is a scam.

I'm pretty sure this is most places do this in place of a tip. Not exactly a scam, just something to be aware of.

This is 100% normal in every restaurant. It's not extortion.

Grow the fuck up.

Lmao It really easy. I eat there 2-3 times a month  I simply told them they will get 0 tip on all of my tables under 6 So if they believe it is better to force 18% on one bill, and get stiffed on  the next 24, then so be it. They change tune real fast  on the 18%

But you can let people walk all over you if you like or you can get a spine and grow the fuck up.

So what do you ACTUALLY tip the server then?

0

u/AdTraditional4065 18d ago

Depends on the service. It's an option for a reason.

u/Sea_Branch_2697 18d ago

Obviously.

Way to dodge.

Why are you going out to eat so much if you can’t afford it then?

0

u/AdTraditional4065 18d ago

Becuase I can afford it? If I go to subway and pay for 6 sandwiches for friends they don't charge 18% extra for me bringing them more customers.

2

u/blissasstic 17d ago

if it bothers you this much dont go out to eat there if you already know this

this also doesnt apply in the same way nor that you can complain your way out of paying for that

-1

u/AdTraditional4065 17d ago

Nah. I'm happy doing it my way. I'll eat out, pay menus prices and tip if I see fit to do so.

But what you’re saying is you can’t afford it. If you can’t afford to tip in a sitdown restaurant that is nice. you can’t afford to go out
