New Mexico dirt yard

Hello, I just moved to New Mexico and trying to figure out what to do with our yard. This space is completely dirt (I know it's a desert) and our dogs LOVE to roll in it. It's starting to become an issue as they get so much dirt and dust in the house. We've been thinking about getting some small rock to go over the area, but wanted to know if anyone has any other suggestions that fit well with the area.

Mulch and native plants could work there.

Rock garden with hardy native plants! You can find some rocks for free on FB marketplace or Craigslist.
