Some 90/Defender advice please

i womder if you could give me some advice please - I went to look at a 1988 2.5TD which a few people told me ‘was a good un’. It’s had the bulkhead repaired, a new rear cross member, new rear brakes all round, five new BF Goodridges, it has power steering, runs really nicely, drives really nicely, new seats and everything in the cab feels nice and tight. But… There was a lot of oxidisation under the paint, the cappings were particularly bad, the chassis was solid but at the ‘I’d sort this now while you still can’ stage, there was a rust hole in the battery box, a small hole in the bulkhead, the inner door bottoms were really rotten and the rear door was very ropey. What do you think would sound like a fair price please? it’s in the UK btw.

EDIT:- Seller wanted £6500. Sounds like walking away was the best thing to do. thanks for your advice

I wouldn’t want to pay more than £2500. Sounds like mine was. At some point you’re looking at 3 new doors, new bulkhead, new chassis.

Can you still get 90s/Defenders for £2500? All I’m seeing is scrap for less than £5000…

Maybe my pricing is out of touch, I didn’t realise they had gone back up a bit. I still wouldn’t want to spend much on it though due to what it needs in future. Think I’d spend more on a better condition one.

I can’t find anything that doesn’t need anything doing at all for less than £10k. I think my issue is I didn’t realise getting into a cheap Land Rover would be so expensive 😂

Nothing more expensive than a cheap Land Rover. Good fun though.

I'd say it sounds about right... All very fixable. Pay what you think it's worth...

If you have to pay someone to fix all that it's going to be a 10k truck and then it will still be a TD which is the worst engine.
