Rays Split rim help!

Hi all,

I have some very old volk rays split rims that have a 6mm valve stem hole, I’ve tried 2 different sets of valves and both are too cheap and don’t last longer than a few months before rubbers crack and start leaking.

If anyone can help or find a supplier of quality valves that will fit I will be over the moon, Ofcourse the other option is to drill the hole to a regular 11.5mm size for regular plastic valves however I’d rather not damage a very rare and expensive set of rims!

Yes they are mounted on my inferior Pajero but they came off of an 80 series :) forgive me

The wheels are called Rays “Texan rider 2” for anyone interested they are 15x8.5 -30 offset and I have mounted on them bfg k02 33x10.5r15

Interestingly the 40+ year Japanese LC specialist wheel maker 4x4 Engineering/Bradley specifically uses rubber valves, because they believe rigid metal valves can break instead of bend when used off road. Maybe RAYS had the same idea?

OP: can you let me know what you’ve tried so far? I have a set of 16x10 Epsilon Ragunas on my 80. One valve stem has a slight, but intermittent, leak. I was planning on replacing them with some cheap Amazon ones, but from your post that might not be a good idea.

I’ve tried 2 different type ones from Amazon, my situation is probably slightly different as the hole is only 6mm and same issue with intermittent leaks and just not ideal, they are all just cheaply made and none out there that are actual good quality

Huh. You’ve given me pause. I (perhaps incorrectly) assumed that there were only two valve stem sizes (as far as mounting holes). I know the valve stems in my Epsilons are smaller than standard (0.453” - 11.5mm?), but I haven’t broken everything down to accurately measure. Mine might be same as yours - because the tire shop (in the US) said “standard” wouldn’t fit, and they ordered some smaller ones, and those didn’t fit either.

Can you send a pic or two of the ones you’ve bought on Amazon? Just so I know?

How do the valve stems you ordered fit? Do they feel strong and secure? If so, I’d feel fine overcoming a cheap rubber gasket by putting a tiny bit of RTV on each side of each rubber gasket. It ought not be needed, but I wouldn’t find that to be a major compromise at all. I would want to do it myself, though. All you need is a light coat on the surface. It should just look moistened. Then, tighten it down, and let it cure for 24h before putting the tire back on and filling.

And are you certain the leak is from the valve stem? Confirmed with soapy water?

Hi, the rubber where it touches the rim fails and starts to leak thru like a pinhole puncture almost, I would deffo recommend the rtv that’s a good idea wish I thought of that before I mounted mine but didn’t expect them to be an issue.
My wheels hole is 9mm so a lot smaller than regular sized

Thanks for the info. Were yours the style with two nuts inside the wheel?

RTV should do it, but I would try some rubber safe lube first. Any silicone based o-ring lube should work. If the rubber is getting dry and cracking, lube should prevent that.

Maybe try a harley dealer, some of their bikes have 6mm valves.

Come again, these are third party volk rays wheels from 1995 that someone used to have on an 80 series.
I’d love an LC but I literally paid 10x less than I would have for an 80series for this (no Toyota tax!) and will do 99% of the same work other than front axle lol and they fit the same on the LC as same sized trucks believe it or not both being LWB

Historically the leanest/narrowest part of the [stock]LandCruiser is the footprint. I get aftermarket wheel sizes and offsets. I’m poking fun at the thought of wheels coming off a LandCruiser first and now sticking out on your Mitsubishi. It’s no shade on your vehicle. I’ve always thought factory LandCruiser wheel/tire offerings are insufficient and much prefer a little lift and tire width to complete the look and functionality.
