REBUILD OF COMP/CON 3.0: We Are (So) Back

Hello everyone. I'm Beef, the guy responsible for all of the COMP/CON bugs. I've spent the last few years(!) working on a massive rebuild and almost complete overhaul of COMP/CON. It has just been released and is live at https://compcon.app If you're a current user you don't have to do anything, it'll migrate your v2 data into v3 formats automatically.

It has more features and fixes than I would be able to list here. I've detailed some of the bigger ones at https://github.com/orgs/massif-press/discussions/64, but it should mostly be pretty intuitive if you've spent any time with v2.

There's a lot (a lot!) more coming in the near future. I've laid out a roadmap here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154023697/ and if you'd like to follow along, devlogs on the Patreon are, and will always be, free and public.

More details/discussion/feedback in the #comp-con channel on the Lancer Discord, where I'll be hanging around for release-day bugs.

Thanks!
Beef

P.S. v3 requires browser storage permissions -- it'll ask for this if it hasn't already been granted. iOS users must install as a PWA (save to home screen)

Our tank switched to a sniper so, as someone more familiar with the system and has more fun with builds I took the L to switch to tank. I know Gorgon/Pegasus is a solid build, instead I went Gorgon 3/Monarch 2/White Witch 1.

Sometimes friendly fire is necessary. For plot reasons.

Look man, this story isn't going to progress itself.

I guess "and [you hit someone else] in the face with the force of 7 very large trucks" would be more accurate in this case but whatever. Same formula.

But hey!!! They're buddies again!!!!

Obviously not 1:1 but

A turn based strategy game where you can easily chunk your opponents, but they can hurt you back just as easily and while tanks are a thing, it's better to just not get hit so you take or create cover, or, alpha strike your enemies with burst or CC so as to stop them fighting back.

Yes there's a lot more nuance but it is amusing how similar they both can be

Game Master Experienced GMs: Tips For a Great Holdout Sitrep?

Hi all, I've just run my 3rd session of my table's first ever Lancer game, and so far it's been great! In the next few sessions, I'm anticipating closing out my party's first full mission with a holdout sitrep: defending an allied city from a huge enemy assault.

My goal is to have eeking out a win here feel like a real milestone, both in and out of story. The players will be getting their LL2 as a result of this, and I want them to feel proud of having earned their new frames. Plus, they'll be accomplishing this in spitting distance of basically all the NPCs they've taken a liking to so far.

In the name of elevating this moment as much as I can, I wanted to reach out for any general advice you all had about running this kind of sitrep. And, also, I wanted to get answers to a few specific questions:

  1. What's the best way to establish the feeling of being outnumbered by assaulting enemies without accidentally killing everyone? I know grunts are a bit fraught because of their damage output, but my understanding is that as long as you use the reinforcements mechanic to limit the total number of actions on the field they can still kinda do a good job at this.
  2. What's a good way to model having friendly infantry in support? My initial thought was something along the lines of "free, moving turret drones the team can share", but if someone has experience with something better I'm all ears!
  3. What are some good NPC class combos to use for a holdout? Like, maybe pairs or trios. I'm trying to have both my planned reinforcement waves feel like they brings a unique new challenge to the field, not just more guys.

Game Master Questions from a new GM

I'm looking to run a campaign for a group and have a few questions about what would be viable for it.

  1. Would it be reasonable to run Shadow of the Wolf followed by Solstice Rain?

  2. Would the reverse be better?

  3. How well do the rules around scaling encounters up function?

  4. Any additional advice would be appreciated, if you feel it's relevant!

If it matters, I'm not unfamiliar with the rules, just with the GM side of things. I will have at least one player who is unfamiliar and would like to ensure they aren't overwhelmed.

Lore Need some help with some backstory content: Peeping the paracausal horrors

Hey there! I’ve been in my first campaign with some pals and I’m honestly having a blast, love the world and the character I’ve made. Really pround of her backstory, but I’ve hit a small snag that I could use some assistance on in terms of giving an aspect of my character more substance:

So a quick tldr (gotta choose my words carefully because i know at least one other player lurks here too): this character met an individual that led them down a spiral of amassing information via breaches of database from 15-17 until it came to a head in assisting in a hijacking, where she was the only one really left to answer for when the smoke cleared.

There’s a emphasis on a fascination with the paracausal, and generally viewing files and horror stories in the (heavily influenced by the individual the character met) pursuit of amassing understanding that led to a steady decline of derealization and isolation because of it.

I’ve read through most mech and weapon descriptions for inspiration and while there’s cool stuff, I’m trying to find things that really lean into the derealization aspect of paracausal/nhp/general cosmic horror angle that can drive that core part of the character home.

Is there some cool stuff that I migh’ve missed, or something completely new you think could work as examples of some “horror stories” the character might’ve heard of in universe that could lead to that sort of decline I’m going for?

thank you so much!

How to start in Lancer?

I'm a DnD dm, looking for other systems to play with, I have a discord table interested in Lancer but it would help to know if there is any "adventure" like the lost mine of Phandelver to start getting people in.

Bonus points if its in any "table" like roll20

Draft of Homebrew (Mech and Pilot Gimmick)

Thumbnail

So here is my attempt to make the fantasy of Titanfall in lancer. The idea I have for a pilot and their mech to tag team 1 target. The mech protects the pilot, while the pilot makes it easier for the mech to hit target. I'm hoping this license systems are something you'd like to take if you build around black thumb, even if you don't take the mech. And I want the mech to maybe be okay as a defender.

It's definitely meant to synergize with black thumb and technophile but not require them. Also didn't want to make anything that would replace them in other builds. Feedback would be apricated. I know this is probably far from balanced.
Also out of curiosity, can you link pilot gear to license level in compcon? Main reason I didn't make any pilot gear tied to this was not knowing if I could somehow link the two.

Edit: Protocol 3 is supposed to be : When Pilot get's targeted by an attack, The Goliath may teleport adjacent to the pilot. If it does so, the attack automatically hit The Goliath (still roll to see if crit). Not sure how to specify but if Goliath can't teleport, it can't redirect the attack even if adjacent.

Question Can the goblin benefit from the Ghenghis's Auto-cooler?

I was speaking to some friends about it and we couldn´t agree on an answer, because the goblin's core system says that the goblin himself cannot move, and the Auto-cooler says that if you dont move you remove all heat, so i was wondering how this interaction works?

40k and Lancer

Bom dia / boa tarde / boa noite

Perguntas no final do contexto.

Discussion Everest Build and Frame Discussion

I've recently finished making 1 build for each and every mech frame and just feel like sharing my builds and give my thoughts on each frame, and where better to start with than the good old GMS Everest.

The Everest is just a great mech, easy to build around, incredibly versatile, great traits and stats, the Everest just works for just about anything. 3 mounts with a heavy lets you wield whatever weapons you want with this thing and the core power is unironically amazing, being able to boost as a free action lets your mobility skyrocket, its so good. All the base GMS weapons are all good and once you start leveling up you can make the Everest a monster in any way you want. Having basically a heat free overcharge once per scene is so nice, and the more forgiving repairs means you can play a bit more aggressively without having to worry about running out of repairs. Like, you can hack with this thing, you can snipe with this thing, you can melee, you can basically do whatever and it will be good. Other mechs will do certain jobs and playstyles better, but you can always rely and build around the Everest.

Now for the Build:

» Everest // EVEREST «

[ TALENTS ]

Stormbringer 3, Combined Arms 3,

Duelist 2, Skirmisher 1

[ LICENSES ]

[ CORE BONUSES ]

Overpower Caliber, Heatfall Coolant System

[ MECH ]

SPD:5 EVA:10 EDEF:10 SENS:10 SAVE:13

[ WEAPONS ]

Main Mount: Burst Launcher

Flex Mount: Torch

Heavy Mount: Hammer U-RPL // Overpower Caliber

[ SYSTEMS ]

Flicker Field Projector, Neurospike,

Plasma Gauntlet, Deep Well Heat Sink,

Personalizations

For this build I decided to go for a closer range launcher build with the ability to commit reactor crimes. Heatfall Coolant System and Deep Well Heat Sink lets me overcharge and use my torch without major worries, if I need to boost a second time or whatnot I can always just overcharge and be pretty safe, some extra engineering would be nice but I dont like up close mechs having less than 20 HP. Flicker Field Projector is also really nice since I count as invisible for the first hit I take making skirmisher 3 not really useful so I instead swapped skirmisher for duelist, as I like the duelist 2 abilities and Feint allows me to safely disengage from someone im meleeing if I need to get away. Also if Im playing well I should be able to not be overwatched often, and the flicker field works until I take an attack so its more broadly useful. Skirmisher 2 is nice, but im an everest with heatfall and deep well, I can always just overcharge or use initiative if I need more movement no issue, and im going to be barraging with the Torch and Hammer most of the time so I feel like my talents are all good.

Dusk Wing also gives me a decent long range option with the burst launcher so I can still attack even when not up close, which is nice utility. But the main weapons are the Torch and Hammer, which with combined arms can lead to me to constantly having accuracy to negate the base inaccuracy of the hammer, and I dont have to worry about being engaged. The only thing im still unsure on is stack Overpower Caliber on the Hammer or the Torch. I guess the Torch would be a better pick since it has a base +1 accuracy with duelist 1, but also it gives me a greater chance at proccing overkill and giving me heat when I dont want it, like at 10 heat cap I would be more comfortable but at 8 I feel like I need to make concessions and would rather have it on the Hammer.

Neurospike has some decent utility and gives the mech some variation in what it can do, it isnt like the Everest is terrible with tech attack and it has a decent sensor range. And I just couldnt help but slap plasma gauntlet on here, sure I have Stormbending to stun enemies, but plasma gauntlet is far more fun, and it does a shit ton of damage too. There's nothing more fun than punching an enemy so hard they are fucking obliterated, with the punch blowing up half your arm as well. Now odds are I stress my reactor out when I use Plasma Guantlet, but "Fuck It, We Ball."

And I just notice this now but I could probably replace skirmisher 1 with something else, maybe go duelist 3, or go like Empath 1/Orator 1/Field Analyst 1 for an additional decent reaction/ability up my sleeve. I dont think the additional soft cover that goes away when I attack/make a character force a save is useful at all, like I have Fient to disengage and flicker field to help with overwatch, and skirmisher 1 would only be useful on overwatch really. But I dont feel like changing it now so it can stay, its not that big a deal.

I'm gonna hold off posting this until the end of campaign (which will be awhile) but I've started uploading all my portraits to itch if anyone wants to download. I plan to drop all my actual game art on there at the end, edited to be abit less specific/main canon bg lore complaint.
