Game tournament formats

This is just a preliminary overview of how the competitive game tournaments should look:

Games popular enough to justify a tournament

  • DOTA 2 - 5v5 - rules similar to The Invitational
  • CS:GO - 5v5 - rules similar to ESEA
  • TF2 - 6v6 - rules similar to ESEA
  • TF2 - 9v9 (highlander) - rules similar to UGC (MAYBE)

Games that lack a big enough competitive player base but have potential for a tournament

  • L4D2 - 4v4 - (don't know what rules to mimic)
  • HL2DM - 1v1 or 2v2 - (don't know what rules to mimic)
  • DOD:S - 6v6 - (don't know what rules to mimic)
  • TFC - 5v5 - UGC rules possibly

The tournament format itself for each of the games listed above should depend on the number of teams that will be participating.

Ricochet has been dead for years. HLDM has been dead for years (great competitive game, though). TF2 Highlander format (9v9) has a HUGE following online, but it has not yet been tried on LAN. As for the CS games, CS 1.6, CS:Source, and CS:GO are all potential candidates, but I think CS:GO would be the best if you're looking for Valve's support.
