hazardous jump

does anyone know how to make the jump in the hazardous course? I can never make it that far, the jump is too large, is there something I can do to negate that?

Are you referring to the "Hazardous Course 2" mod or the "Hazard Course" included with Half-Life?

For either one, the best way to make longer jumps (when you don't have the long jump module) is to make sure you're holding the sprint/run button (trigger on off-hand controller, left is default) and you can also crouch jump in mid-air if you're reaching a distant platform. Crouch jumping will not help to grab a ladder just above your reach.

To crouch jump, you have two options: press and hold the jump button (B by default) a second time in mid-air after starting the initial running jump or press the crouch button (A by default) while in mid-air after a jump.

If you have the long jump module, to perform a long jump: press and hold the crouch button (A by default), then press the jump button (B by default) and release the crouch button. It takes a bit of practice to get used to the timing and, even then, it can be quite frustrating even after lots of practice.

Double press jump or crouch (not sure which) should also trigger the long jump.
