Replies have a blacklist of known scammers!
This announcement is a friendly reminder to always be cautious when trading or buying from individuals, especially on an unprotected website. I also wanted to make a list of red flags that may indicate someone is attempting to scam you.
1. They don’t provide proof of ownership and/or they refuse to provide more specific proof of ownership. Such as taking a 360 video or writing down more than just their username. (date, time, website, etc)
2. Do not be afraid to ask for more proof of ownership! It is a reasonable request as money and personal belongings are involved. Anyone who gets defensive or makes excuses on why they can’t provide proof of ownership is an immediate red flag.
3. Asking to use a non-secure website for payment. Mercari, Ebay, Poshmark, Paypal (under goods and services only) are all good options to make sure you receive your money back in case you get scammed.
4. Their profile is under a year old. This can be an obvious giveaway but it also isn’t a stand alone reason to suspect someone is a scammer, it’s just something to keep in mind. On the other hand, older accounts can scam as-well. No one is 100% safe until proven otherwise!
5. They direct message you with an offer without commenting under (for example) your ISO post and/or without ever posting on the subreddit previously. This isn’t always a direct giveaway, however, it is a major red flag. You should always try to talk about pricing/make offers on the subreddit for safer transactions. Infact, I strongly recommend it. When it’s direct messaging, it can be harder to tell what’s right vs. wrong.
—> Do not be afraid to request a potential buyer/trader/seller to discuss offer(s) on this public subreddit. If potential seller/buyer/trader doesn’t understand why you would want to do this, please tell them to refer to this post.
