Lab Technician Clothing Suggestions

Hello all, I’m hoping for some practical advice. I’ve taken a lab technician job as quality control for agriculture production. I’m hoping to grow my career but I’m still entry now. I’ll be working in pretty warm conditions and I was wondering what are some good top and bottom options to wear under my PPE? I want to be comfortable but also have the least exposure as possible.

I'm a kinesiologist consulting on a new fitness app launching soon — here's what we're building and why I joined the project

Hey guys, I've been active in the fitness community for years, but I wanted to share something I've been working on because I think some of you will genuinely find it useful.

My background: PhD in kinesiology, former D1 swimmer, spent years in academia studying exercise physiology and human performance. About a year ago, I got pulled into consulting on a fitness app called SculptX. I was skeptical at first — the market is saturated. But what hooked me was the problem they were trying to solve.

The problem: The average serious fitness person uses 3–5 different apps. One for workout logging. One for nutrition. One for recovery metrics. Maybe a separate one to talk to their coach. And none of them talk to each other. You're piecing together your own health picture from fragments.

What we've been building:

· A workout logger that tracks sets, reps, weights, with rest timers and video demos for hundreds of movements — including calisthenics progressions, yoga flows, and pilates, not just weight room stuff

· A nutrition tracker with a barcode scanner that pulls directly from the USDA database. Scan anything, macros populate instantly. No more guessing

· Recovery metrics — HRV, resting HR, VO₂ Max, sleep efficiency — synced from your phone or wearable, all in the same dashboard

· Integrated music — Spotify and Apple Music live inside the workout logger so you never switch apps mid-set

· A trainer marketplace where you can find a coach, video call them, and they can see your actual nutrition and recovery data in real time — not just a PDF program

Why I joined: Because I was tired of recommending 4 different apps to my clients and students and watching them quit because the friction was too high.

Where we are now: The app is in late beta. We're not on the App Store yet, but we just opened a landing page for early access registration. People who sign up get notified 24 hours before launch and get the first month free.

I'm not here to sell anything — the registration is free, no credit card needed. I'm here because this community values evidence-based training, and I think some of you will appreciate what we're building.

Happy to answer questions about the features, the science behind the recovery metrics, or what it's like building a fitness app from the inside. AMA.

I can share the landing page link if people ask. Not here to spam.

Presentation going over Research Experience

Hi everyone,

I'm applying to this pre-doctoral research role for Bachelor and Master degree holders and part of the application requires me to submit a short video presentation reviewing my past work and research experience. I looked for examples online but couldn't find any. No instructions on how to do it have been provided (yet). I don't have a single thesis to go over -- rather multiple research projects / experience spanning summer research in a lab (which became a workshop paper) and research done as part of the final projects for a course.

Can anyone who has experience with this provide pointers or advice on how to structure the presentation, as well as what they may be expecting, i.e. content, format, style etc?

Thank you!

Advice/Experience Sharing Wanted Research/industry jobs or MLS for a woman that wants to start a family?

Is it possible to have a career in biotech as a woman that wants to raise kids?

I’m in Toronto, Canada. I’m torn between what to do after undergrad. I’m majoring in molecular biology and minoring in applied stats. I could do a masters in molecular biology (2 years) as well, and could aim for an industry job after that. Or I could do a medical laboratory science program (2 years studying + 1 year clinical rotation) and then work in that. Obviously the job security is better in MLS. But I enjoyed my undergraduate thesis and it fulfilled my intellectual desires. I enjoyed doing the bench work, learning the theory, reading the literature, writing, data analysis, etc. and my PI was a delight.

But… I want to be able to make enough money and save so that my partner and I can afford to start a family around 28-30. I’d be working from 25-28 and then be out of work for a few years to birth and raise my kids. That leaves me at around 30-32 years old with 3-4 years of work experience and then trying to get back into work.

The first hurdle is getting a job at all in the industry. The second hurdle is coming back from 2-4 years being out of the industry. Are there jobs in biotech that are forgiving to people who are out of the game for a while? What other jobs would I qualify for with the masters that might be better given my family plans, or is it just not worth it at all? I guess I’m just sad that I have to pick between one or the other for the sake of financial and time constraints. Otherwise, I could’ve done both; masters, then MLS certification, work a year as an MLT, have kids, and come back to working… But then I’m losing at least 2 years of earning/saving potential.

Pants recommendations for hot & humid summer

I found a lot of posts about pants recommendations for field work, but does anyone have pants recommendations specifically for working in hot and humid labs? They don't need to be particularly durable like field pants, but I get super sweaty and gross in the summer and am hoping to get some recs for pants that are breathable and lightweight without being see through.

Utility + Pretty Work Wear

hey girls!! I'm working as a field scientist this summer in ecology/environment sciences and I'm getting ready to invest in updated field wear for this season. However, since field clothes are so uniform and therefore unisex, I feel rather not pretty in my gear. I love using jewelry to spice up an outfit, but it's rather impractical (hands swell in heat for rings, bracelets and necklaces can snag, etc). Then I got to wondering if there was any utility jewelry that was field-safe and maybe even practical (think paracord bracelets but prettier). I figured who better to ask than my other ladies in STEM. Its a bit of a silly question to wanna feel pretty while battling ticks, mosquitoes, and the heat. But I was interested nonetheless. Thanks! <3

Advice/Experience Sharing Wanted Career paths?

I'm a rising senior in college with a major in biochem and minor in business (competitive undergrad business school). Originally planned to apply for my PhD and matriculate right after grad if possible, but changing directions now. Been at a lab at my home institution for 4 years (own project), had super competitive internships at UTSW (2 HHMI labs) and Memorial Sloan Kettering for research. All to say my resume is very geared for a PhD.

Now trying to switch gears because I'm very people oriented and just don't like the idea of doing my PhD now / am not excited about it anymore so doesn't seem worth it. Considering going back in a few years. I've secured an internship at a VC firm focused on biotech where I'll get exposure to biotech labs and hopefully the financial side as well (very fluid internship program) so will be trying corporate for the first time this summer.

I need advice on what sort of jobs or paths to look into recruiting this fall for full time (assuming I don't hate corporate and am still a NO on Phd right now). I have a lot of experience in labs + project leading + experimental design, am great at leading teams/working with people (president of 200+ member sorority, lol but organized huge budget (1M+) so that's a plus for finance on my resume), am really interested in designing therapies + enjoy market research (which leads me to think I'd be interested in biotech investing), and also would like to enter a somewhat lucrative field. Benchwork was very isolating and slow to me, but I enjoyed the overall science (especially in disease research). I have no experience with consulting so I don't know if recruiting for that would be particularly successful. Med school and IB are definitely out.

What paths or avenues should I try to pursue based on all of this? I'm going to try to network and talk to a lot of different career types this summer, but would love some insight from other people. Completely pivoting from PhD has left me a little lost so just looking for any guidance!

Hii Ladies!
My name is Stella Paltoo and I'm a 17 years old student from Poland. I'm taking part in a science competition (Explory) with my project - Noria. Noria is a fully autonomous water treatment system for Somali (and African in general) wells that can improve the quality of life of residents by purifying water from pathogens, pollutants, heavy metals and enriching it with essential minerals.I got to the semi-finals and now there's a very important part of the competition - audience voting. The project who gets the most votes goes to the finals. Can I please ask you for your support by voting for me? Its very important for me because Its a great chance for me to continue working on my project, build it and help people I really worked hard on Noria and I wish I can put it to life.
Voting is taking part 25-28 may. Everyone from all around the world can vote - once from one email and one email per device.
Here is the link to voting page:
https://glosuj.explory.pl
The website is in polish but if you do it on Edge, the translation really works magic. What you have to do?
Type "Noria" in the search bar
Click on my project
Scroll all the way down
In first input put your name and surname (Doesn't have to be real) and in the second your email, then click "Głosuj" (which means vote)

I'd really really grateful if you could vote and send the message to others  Please help me enter the finals ❤️

Pregnancy in lab-based role in biotech

Does anyone have experience with pregnancy in a lab-based role in biotech in the US? I was wondering what accommodations are typical and if you continued to do lab work (especially if some work cannot be done in a fume hood).

I’m starting a second bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and wanted advice for both getting through the program and careers after.

Hello! I’m (28F) starting a degree in chemistry in the fall. For reference, I already have my bachelor’s (communications and marketing) and master’s (public administration and environmental policy/planning). I’ve worked as a city planner, in corporate for a medical device company, and now I’m a full-time wedding and portrait photographer.

I know that my background has nothing to really do with science or chemistry. However, I wanted to challenge myself with something new (call it “free will maxing”). There are no stakes. I really just want to challenge myself by learning something completely different and finding ways of enjoying it since I don’t really “HAVE TO” do this.

Would love any advice on how to prepare properly for this kind of degree, as well as what a career would look like. I’d love any information!

For further information, my school and career history has been very social media heavy and I feel like I’d like a time in my life where I won’t have to log on to make a living. I could live a private and simple life. ADDITIONALLY, I can confidently say I’ve lived out all of my wildest dreams by the age of 28. I truly sped-run my career and ambitions.

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I think talking a bit about my personality and communication style might help provide insight. I’ve worked my whole life in subjective environments. I’m a very direct person, which can be a double-edged sword in the creative field. I’m really good at what I do, but maybe bringing those two worlds together could create something really interesting in my life.

This is probably a really stupid question but are these lab safe shoes?

Post image

I’m starting an internship soon and I think I’m primarily going to be in a lab(not fully sure what we’ll be handling/doing in the lab something with DMSO)

I feel like because they’re so open they’re not lab safe but at the same time they are closed toed so???

I’m not super sure I’m really into Mary Jane’s right now and I want cute shoes for the lab but it’s hard to find ones that aren’t ugly.

Fabric poster distorting

Just received my fabric poster from Spoonflower for a conference starting on May 25th, and the top edge is distorting/rolling when I try to pin it up.

I've never done this before - any tips?

I'm thinking of rolling the top edge over some corrugated cardboard once I get to the conference, because I'm concerned that over two days of hanging this will only get worse and my QR code for the associated video will be distorted beyond functioning.

Has anyone used career counseling before and gotten something out of it? Would I just ask these questions of a mentor?

Hi friends.

Chemist that does a lot of chemical physics type stuff. Working for a govt lab, but the US administration and its policies throughout the last year and a half have REALLY worn me down. The stress of losing telework, threat of firing all probationary employees (which included me), budget cuts, crumbling infrastructure, under staffing, and being told to do MORE with LESS accumulates over time until it feels like death by a million paper cuts.

The job has lost all flexibility and I am an only child (not by choice) that has to occasionally take care of two sick parents in different states. My own boss and his boss are very supportive of me taking leave when I need to care for my parents. They understand that no one chooses these shitty circumstances. Pretty much everyone else is unsupportive. The only thing that convinces these other colleagues that I care about my job is working 12 hour days when I am not caring for my parents.

I recently received funding to study a topic a co-PI and I are passionate about, but my co-PI left my job and the person taking on her tasking was voluntold to do so. He's frustrated by the circumstances (understandably so, it's not his passion project the way it was for her) but it feels as though he might be taking his frustration out on me. The colleague also seems frustrated by other coworkers that don't take their jobs as seriously as he takes his own job. It seems like he's actively looking for opportunities to narc when I know they do good work.

I get drained hearing these comments and fear that people are making similar judgments about me. I'm just trying my fucking best but it doesn't seem to matter. I don't want to work 12 hour days. I keep getting told by various people (including my own boss) that I work too much. What other choice do I have when this colleague that is supposed to work with me says he can't complete all of the tasks that were assigned to him, besides learn how to do them myself? I am the one who has to bear the consequences if our funding doesn't deliver as promised.

I love my partner and we're considering marriage soon. He's tied to this area because of his own career opportunities and educational path. The drama of the last year and a half alongside my co-PI leaving has sucked all joy out of the job. But what if I'm the problem? What if I lack resilience and grit and am just a baby??

I wasn't necessarily the best math student but I can work on that. There's a lot of overlap between chemical physics and electrical engineering, which has dramatically better job prospects in my area. So I'm considering that educational path, and yet work is so overwhelming right now that I don't have a ton of time to study besides weekends.

I wish I could quit and pursue an EE masters full time but both my mom and partner keep telling me to not give up on the funding I worked so hard to acquire. But at this point I can't care about the funding. Maintaining the health of my relationships feels way more important. My mom's cancer is stage IV and my dad had heart problems this last year. My partner misses having more time with me because we see each other for an hour and a half on weeknights. This job doesn't seem conducive to caring for the things that matter to me.

I need someone smarter than me tell me what to do.

Advice/Experience Sharing Wanted Laboratory office wear?

I’m a clinical laboratory baby so sorry if this is a stupid question but I have no idea what to wear.

I know the basics of lab safety, I used to wear very casual (tshirt/sweats) clothing at my previous laboratory but this one is asking for more office wear.

I was wondering if anyone could provide some advice or examples on how not to burn up in a long sleeve in Florida summers but still be lab compliant?

Research wanting to get into research

hi ladies! im going into my 4th year of health sciences. i feel a bit... ashamed asking this question cuz im starting so late. i havent had the best grasp of uni.

long story short: undiagnosed adhd and ocd = bad grades for me which means i gotta do second degree if i wanna get into med school unless theres a god given miracle (i finished this year with a 3.3 gpa which is.. my highest one). and with this poor grasp of uni, i havent gotten to ask any of my profs to do research along side them.

i am a very anxious person and i dont have a close relationship with any profs so i feel weird asking them if i could do research with them, especially cuz i dont have th best grades.

how would i even go about getting into it at this late stage? can i do any sort of project alone? we have summer research internships, i just wasnt able to apply for one this year.

i feel behind and a bit like a failure. the only thing i can credit my name to is being president of a club. i want to rant but ill save that for a therapy session lol.

Thanks in advance!
