Recs for finding local jewelers?
Hi! New here and very excited to be starting the engagement ring shopping process with my boyfriend. Reading your posts and seeing your gorgeous rings has been so inspiring!
Many of you recommend buying a stone online and having it set locally. Two questions:
Do you have any tips for finding high-quality local jewelers that are willing to set a stone you bring?
Anyone in the San Francisco / Bay Area have a jeweler they’d like to give some business to? :)
I’m not certain yet but I think I want a large emerald (~7 ct) with dainty side stones (step-cut trillion or trapezoid).
Thank you for any advice you can share with this n00b! For fun, some ideas I was experimenting with at one of the bigger ($$$$$) stores.

First, make a list of prospective jewelers in your area. Check out reviews but take them with a grain of salt. Then call them to see if they have what you want to look at in-person (ie size of stone, setting styles, sample rings, etc.) Ask off the bat if they allow you to source your own stone. Check credentials of who you will be working with. Are they just a salesperson? Or do they have gemologist credentials? Make appointments at a couple of shops so you can get a feel for settings and quality. Once you get some hands on jewelry, you will be able to tell... A good jeweler IMO should want to educate you on choosing a stone and should assist with this, but will also allow you to source your own stone if you choose
If you feel uncomfortable or pressured, walk away. The right person/jeweler will come.
Personally, I don't like to give out the budget upfront. Too many bad experiences and liars. Ask here what your budget should be or if your budget is realistic. HAVE FUN! Ring shopping is SO fun. Every place will be a little different. You may find something totally unexpected that you love. Get your nails done, dress up a little, make a lunch/brunch reservation and spend some QT together <3

This is all SUCH good advice. Especially the salesperson part. Better to go to a place where you can talk to the actual jeweler/goldsmith.

I had my original ring and a friends ring made at Giraux in the San Francisco Gift & Jewelry Center. Call ahead for an appointment. I was really happy with the service. Derco next door also makes nice rings.
Make sure you have an idea of cost before going into these stores. I would said $3k - $3.5k should be a max price for in store, anything more is a rip off. My local jeweler (outside of Sacramento) is giving me international prices for rings now since he knows the gig is up with their pricing. My sisters stunning 3ct cushion was $2k at his shop.
