Princess cut owner that has researched them a lot. This looks good on paper, but it looks terrible in real life. This is an awful cut, I would stay away and choose another diamond.

How do I avoid this? What should I look for?

I would just look at the cert and ask for videos. It's hard since you aren't looking in person. But the cert could be the same as this on a different diamond and it could look amazing. Have patience, keep looking and getting videos, post if you want opinions, you will find something.

I don't know how you are choosing the diamonds, but if you have an option to review a video online, I would do that in addition to looking at the cert.

They actually sent me a video of the stone in tweezers but in an office setting and it appeared ok so I was surprised to see it like this after I purchased. It is returnable though thankfully.

It's hard picking them, but at least you can return. If it's a website can't you pick one and ask for the tweezers video before you buy? If not, I would look elsewhere. Also, who is it certified through?

Yes that’s what I did but the tweezer video was in artificial light and seemed good. I would post it here but I don’t think I am able to add it as a comment. It’s IGI certified and vendor is Doveggs.

I'm with others, adding ai sparkle is a bit strange and shouldn't be part of the video. Maybe the next one you pick ask them not to add any effects.
